Father Ted Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 Or he could continue to be a passenger like this season. If anything around the 500k mark is bid we must get rid of him IMO. But Holloway said that Oakley had been carrying an injury ever since he came to us and had been battling through on painkillers. Also I was stupid enough to get Oakley printed on the back of my shirt
Ric Flair Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 Weso, Oakley? They both have their strengths but it all depends on the new manager, how he sees his team shaping up, the job he wants doing in midfield and whether those two fit the requirements. The Oakley of last season would be easily replaced. And the thing that concerns me about both Weso and Oakley is that neither score nor create enough goals. Weso would also be a concern in terms of injury. In truth I think a fit Hammond would be harder to replace than Oakley. Having players with pace and strength is going to be a vital requirement and I don't see we have many such players. One less now Hammond has gone. I accept there may have been good reasons for Hammond's departure but I said last summer that he'd need to be replaced if he wasn't used but it never happened, thus contributing to our eventual demise. Another factor that needs remembering is that there's no sense in hanging on to everyone cos it's counter productive. The manager needs to decide pretty quickly which members of our squad are most likely to blend into the team he wants and then be ruthless about shedding the surplus. Being single minded is a major requirement of a manager. It sets them apart from some fans who often want to retain those they see as our best or biggest name players whether they are suited to our needs or not. For me I'd have a list of qualities I see as positive in a player. A long and perhaps surprising list in some ways. I'd rate the player out of 10 in each category and that would do much to influence my decisions. Statistics are always available to help - number of shots, number of goals, number of successful passes etc. After all was considered, anyone falling short on effect would be quietly on his way out. Whatever his pedigree or reputation. You're not half wheeling out some dog muck today Thracian!!

Daggers Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 I missed that one - Rik's right, the man is on fire today!
Joe. Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 If Oakley's willing to fight to get us out of this division I hope he stays. He could be a class act in League One. But from what we all saw last season it wouldn't be too much of a bad thing if he left. I was extremely disappointed with him.
lildave3 Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 Wouldn't surprise me at all if he left to move to Forest.
Thracian Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 You're not half wheeling out some dog muck today Thracian!! I was almost as big a fan of Weso as you were but look at how many times he played last season and how many goals he scored....one, figure which exactly matched his assists. Matt Oakley failed to score at all and got two assists in more appearances than Weso so any case for either seems pretty thin to me. It can't continue like that if we're ever to be successful again. As for Hammond I know he's the site's mockery man but, given both being fit, I think it would be infinitely easier to mark Oakley out of a game than Hammond.

Tevez Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 As much as I'm a fan of Oakley, he didn't put no effort into this team and he was mildly poor.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with any of what you said (although I probably would with some of it) it just amused me to read it, as most of it was unecessary for the topic in hand and it was almost as if you had been given a new pan and gave it a good run out! I do salute you for your persistance in regular cameos in topics about Elvis Hammond even though he's been injured for a whole season, which indicates his career could be threatened, or the little that was left of it anyway and also the fact he's been released. A year out injured, with no real sign of getting better would suggest he's a busted flush. Fryatt's had his ankle problems as well and he's gotten worse. Hammond has always been crap, so for him to deteriorate as a footballer is frightening.
Daggers Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 The idea that an Elvis Hammond would require marking is super Nothing in his career before coming to us and eight goals in fifty eight appearances serves to clearly state he was lucky to have found something above his level. He's had an entire season to find another club in the knowledge that we were never going to keep him on, not even on the back of his excellent receptionist skills during the open day at the beginning of the season. Nothing. No one is interested in him. For a couple of pretty damn good reasons.
shell-shocker Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 we need a holdin CM, is oakley the man to do that? he has obviously been a good player, buut the reviews from you lot would suggest otherwise?
bigneville Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 we need a holdin CM, is oakley the man to do that? he has obviously been a good player, buut the reviews from you lot would suggest otherwise? Oakley has shown occasionally that he has class for the Championship, but his problem for us was his consistency and his ability to just drift through a game without doing anything of any substance. He quite clearly has ability, but if he shows up at your place with the same attitude he adopted here, he would be an absolute waste of a starting eleven slot. Saying that, if he decided he wanted to play for the club next season and give it his all, I would have no problem with him being here next season. So Matt Oakley is a player with ability, whether or not he's the man for a season of battle at the bottom of the Championship again is a different question.
Tilley Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 Wouldn't suprise me, He lives in Nottingham. Wouldn't be sad to see him go.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 If this is true, I can't believe how niave Holloway was with his signings.I thought a relegation wage drop clause was the standard procedure now-a-days, and with Holloway ignoring this and the financial future of the club, it makes me even happier that he is no longer in charge here. I don't know the ins and outs, but I don't think the absence of the clause in this case was anything to do with Mr Holloway in this particular case, and I could be wrong but I don't believe that managers are generally involved with contract negotiations when signing players these days anyway

The Reverend Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 Clemence and Oakley should be great in league 1 next season if they both stay. And with some decent strikers and wingers. If i had to choose though, i'd get shot of Oakley.

Obviously other managers have found something in both of them and whoever MM appoints could too find something in them, but I'm personally not one to forgive and forget the pedestrian performances and I'd rather get shot of both.
