Porter was steady and occasionally brilliant. My only worry is that Championship level was perfect for him - there'll be more beasts of defenders in this league, and while I'm sure he has the skill to take it past them, I'm not sure he won't get flattened in the process.

Gradel and Porter are totally different. And even if Dyer and Gradel play on the wings there is no reason Porter shouldn't be in his best position of creative central midfield. Nor do I see any reason why we shouldn't follow the much more modern approach of being fluid across midfield with players interchanging.

He also finished up in central midfield for the reserves, had a bad first game and then ran the show. I never saw him get knocked around and some of those reserve teams, particularly the likes of Crystal Palace, were pretty big and bullish.

As for Division One football Porter's already played over 30 Championship games and I don't remember him being knocked about much generally.

hve you even bothered to read the rest of this thread? we have already established that he had more effect on games then any winger we played last season.

I didnt want this thread to end up as Porter lovers VS Porter Haters.

I think everyone needs to have a fresh start this year, and a chance to prove themselves. i am looking forward to the competition between the 5 wingers we now have at the club.

Gradel, Porter, Adams, Dyer, and maybe Hayes aswell. With all five of those battling for two positions im sure they will all up their game, and improve considerably. Assuming we learn how to use wingers properly. i cant remember thelast time we did that which worries me slightly.

In 2006/7 before last season's injury Porter topped Leicester City's list of assists with 7 a total which beat all last seasons best performers, Clemence (6), Sheehan (5) and Fryatt/Hume (3 each).

As for his three goals from the left wing that would have put him joint fifth last season, behind front line strikers Hume (10), Howard (6) and Campbell (5) plus centre-back Kisnorbo with 4. Porter would have been level with Fryatt, Clemence, Stearman and McAuley.

His combined score of 10 goals/assists would have placed him second last season behind only Hume (13) but ahead of Clemence (9) and Sheehan (7).

That's a pretty commendable performance for a bloke in his first season of senior football. More so considering he only started 30 of the 50-odd matches.

I think Fryatt will come good, he was looking good last pre-season but was over looked by Allen for deep freeze, he never really got a look in after that other than games here and there and played out of position.

I agree he wasnt that good last year but who was? I think a fit Matty Fryatt in League One will get you a lot of goals (if given the chance) and i think he and DJ could be a great partneship!

I have nothing against Louis Dodds and i think a move to Lincoln will do him good but he wont get the same amount of goals per game ratio as Fryatt this season (whoever he plays for)!!!

I've no doubt that Fryatt can score in this division. But it's a question of confidence. Will Pearson merely look at his record, and not give him any chance in pre-season? And how long will it take him to get fit?

You may be right!!

I hope pearson gives him a chance as i think he will be a very clever player at this level, a bit slow for a higher level but not this!

Again i think Howard and DJ were crap last year but surely between the 3 plus hopefully a bit of help from Chambers and Sapleton we should get goals galore this year!!
