davieG Posted 10 July 2008 Posted 10 July 2008 Six die in two-vehicle collision Six people have died in a crash between a car and a lorry in the early hours of the morning in Leicestershire. A Ford Mondeo and the lorry collided on the A607 between Kirby Bellars and Melton Mowbray, police said. Six people in the Ford Mondeo were killed. The lorry driver, a 48-year-old man, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. The road has been closed while an investigation is carried out. Police have put local diversions are in place. Police said they were called to the scene about one mile (1.6km) south of Melton town centre at 0154 BST. They said the six people who died in the crash were all believed to be young, but no ages have been released. A section of the A607 around the accident site is expected to remain closed for most of the day.

I saw the occassional car left at the side of a road after a small accident but thankfully never witnessed anything along those lines. Those roads leading to Melton can be quite dangerous, especially in wet weather. Horrible to hear about incidents like this, especially when its so close to home.
dandannieldanok Posted 10 July 2008 Posted 10 July 2008 Very sad, but correct me if I'm wrong, isn't 6 people in a Mondeo illegal? I'm guessing 4 people were cramped in the back, at the very least one without a seatbelt, which is dangerous and can't have helped the situation. Maybe some of the passengers wouldn't have died if there were only 5 in the car, each with their own seatbelt.
Katy Posted 10 July 2008 Posted 10 July 2008 It's the main way to Grantham but I never use it as I hate the road. Yes, 6 people in a car is illegal as everyone needs a seat belt but no one deserves this. I just hope it's not anyone we know, although they are still someone's children, siblings, grandchildren etc. Tragic.

Darkzzz_ Posted 10 July 2008 Posted 10 July 2008 Very very sad news. I am sure more details will be announced as and when. My condolences to all affected by this tragedy.

I'm sure even the most cynical "told you so" wise after the event, hindsight is a wonderful thing, know all gits, may have saved there judgemental comments for more than a few hours.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 10 July 2008 Posted 10 July 2008 I was driving on the A607 late last night, a different stretch of it admittedly, and I thought at the time what a bloody awful night for driving. Standing water everywhere and shit visibility. It was quite a relief to get home - horrible that others didn't
Samilktray Posted 10 July 2008 Posted 10 July 2008 Makes you think twice about who you get in a car with this does.
Vardinhio Posted 10 July 2008 Posted 10 July 2008 I think most people at some point have had one more person than allowed crammed into their cars at some point. Certainly makes you think twice about it now...
Craig Posted 10 July 2008 Posted 10 July 2008 Thoughts go out to the families and friends of those involved :(
Katy Posted 10 July 2008 Posted 10 July 2008 Apologies, I was thinking it was the Melton to Grantham road when in fact it's the Melton to Leicester road which I use all the time. It's very twisty bendy that road. Heard on the radio that the lorry driver was arrested at the scene but released without further action being taken. On the way to Peterborough I can get radio Leicester and they were interviewing people on the street about it and the knives are already out because these people were 'young' why do people judge like this? A lot of people have lost their lives for gods sake!

A lot of people have lost their lives for gods sake! We should all reserve judgement until the facts are known. Lots of youngsters overload their cars - I used to do it myself. It may be an ill-judged thing to do but we all make bad judgements sometimes, but rarely pay such a heavy penalty.

stez Posted 10 July 2008 Posted 10 July 2008 i'm also thinking about the lorry driver, he works across the road from us, i live in the same village as a lot of salveson workers.
Katy Posted 10 July 2008 Posted 10 July 2008 i'm also thinking about the lorry driver, he works across the road from us, i live in the same village as a lot of salveson workers. We do. Poor bloke will be traumatised for life after witnessing that.

You can only imagine the carnage at the scene. I work just up the road from the scene. Helicopters been buzzing round all morning. Apparently they now have the lorry off the car but recovery of the bodies has yet to take place. Road likely to be shut for some time. If you know the road, the accident is between the right hand turn to Eye Kettleby and the Samworths factory.
AoWW Posted 10 July 2008 Posted 10 July 2008 We do. Poor bloke will be traumatised for life after witnessing that. I was once first on the scene at an accident where 1 person in a car had died and two others (one a child) were seriously injured. The motorcyclist they'd hit was also dead. It was truly horrific and something I would never want to experience again, nor would I want anyone else to have to go through that. My heart goes out to all those involved in this tragic accident - regardless of 'blame' - and to their family and friends.
Samilktray Posted 10 July 2008 Posted 10 July 2008 I find myself a lot more paranoid when in cars with people now a days due to one or two events. I think one of the main problems with some (not all) young drivers is there generally very fearless on the roads, and i don't think until something actually happens that effects them, that they'll understand the risks on roads.

Ah that's awful Every time we go to Leicester we have to use this road, it's shite to drive on sometimes. They have already reduced the speed limit after a number of fatalities on this stretch, I don't know how many times they can reduce it without causing more accidents.
Simi Posted 10 July 2008 Posted 10 July 2008 Agreed with the comment above about young drivers being fearless. It's certainly a worry and it does often take a hit or something similar until they realise, you just have to hope it isn't a serious one.
fox123 Posted 10 July 2008 Posted 10 July 2008 I know one of the people involved in the crash, he was one of my temps, worked on Magna Park, I had actually given him a bollocking yesterday morning because of his poor attendance, and he had left work early yesterday morning because he was ill. Can't go into to much details because of the police doing enquiries, but I was very shocked to find out it was him, as he was due to be in work at 6am today, and i have left him messages on his mobile asking where he was because he had not turned up. Very sad
