JoeyB Posted 14 July 2008 Posted 14 July 2008 Will that effect us much? santander own Abbey national aswell
Asha Posted 14 July 2008 Posted 14 July 2008 Will that effect us much?santander own Abbey national aswell It means everyone I went work experience with has been/will be laid off, which is a shame. A+L were really struggling though and it was their only option really.
Chairman of the Bored Posted 14 July 2008 Posted 14 July 2008 "We all sit in the Abbey National stand, the Abbey National stand, the Abbey National stand; we get money and it comes from Madrid, comes from Madrid, comes from Madrid."
DJ Barry Hammond Posted 14 July 2008 Posted 14 July 2008 Well it's a big company based in leicester - that will lose it's heritage. I suppose that means it's more likely, when the shirt deal next comes up we'll get something crap - anyone for Bodyform to sponsor us next time - at least they'd insist on us playing with wings(ers)
Tevez Posted 14 July 2008 Posted 14 July 2008 Does that mean we're going to be called Racing Leicester or Santander Fosse in the next 10 years?
Lillehamring Posted 14 July 2008 Posted 14 July 2008 i worked for them for 6 years and they were always a bit of a shambles... however.... i always hoped they'd merge with abbey national, just for the acronym, who wouldn't want their bank to be called ALAN?
Phlashman Posted 14 July 2008 Posted 14 July 2008 Sponsorship could be an option, with the British GP, which they also sponsor, coming to Donno they'll have even more sporting links with the county.
Fox You Forest Posted 14 July 2008 Posted 14 July 2008 i worked for them for 6 years and they were always a bit of a shambles...however.... i always hoped they'd merge with abbey national, just for the acronym, who wouldn't want their bank to be called ALAN? "where are you going?" Im off round our Alan's.

"where are you going?" Im off round our Alan's. Depositing in and withdrawing from ALAN doesn't sound like something I'd want to be doing. Could put you off saving your money.
Zingari Posted 15 July 2008 Posted 15 July 2008 Depositing in and withdrawing from ALAN doesn't sound like something I'd want to be doing. Could put you off saving your money. It would be worse if they called it ANAL
Raj Posted 15 July 2008 Posted 15 July 2008 Will that effect us much?santander own Abbey national aswell Might not go through yet as santander already own Abbey and someone else might come in and outbid,as at the moment you'd be getting 3.17p per share....they were 12 quid odd a year ago... Even if it does,it may not lead to immediate job cuts.....sorry im boring!!!!
Monk Posted 15 July 2008 Posted 15 July 2008 Although Abbey may lose some staff and heritage it will not lose its brand or the need to sponsor. I'm interested to see to what extent Santander change the brand - do they change the logo or does that make them too homogenous with Abbey? I think they will probably take the route RBS took with Natwest in that they maintain their own seperate advertising and sponsorship. In this case I don't think it would affect us much. Having said that there are few football teams sponsored by banks. Santander may lead A+L away from that then?
blue blood Posted 15 July 2008 Posted 15 July 2008 i worked for them for 6 years and they were always a bit of a shambles...however.... i always hoped they'd merge with abbey national, just for the acronym, who wouldn't want their bank to be called ALAN? I worked there for 2 years....carlton park!....what will they do with carlton park? i suppose the kids at leapfrog will have more space to play....and they could extend the gym!!

Monk Posted 15 July 2008 Posted 15 July 2008 The deal has actually gone through and the offer was 317p

Monk Posted 15 July 2008 Posted 15 July 2008 Just goes to show how bad a situation they are in. Santander give them the guarentee of cash that they could never have had as an independant bank. I don't think it's a bad offer in the current climate. And Raj, A+L were never truely worth £12 a share it was hugely inflated in the market at the time as we all know before we figured out half their loans had turned into liquid shit.

Monkster...whats the chance of another bid coming in? Im sure i read somewhere that it COULD happen. I know the 12 quid was way too high, but 317 seems cheap doesnt it???
Monk Posted 15 July 2008 Posted 15 July 2008 A+L are very similar to Bradford & Bingley and Northern Rock in terms of the business they run. I wouldn't go as far as saying they're fcked but they would have had a huge job to rebuild after so many mortgages fell through. This article doesnt seem to think anyone else will come in for them. Key quote from that article: However, another large shareholder said: "A&L is probably worth more than 300p but you need to unlock that value. On its own, struggling to get funding, it's weak. " Having said that, you watch Bradford and Bingley over the next few weeks. My money is on Lloyds to come in for them. By the way, should this be headed to general chat around about now?
blue blood Posted 15 July 2008 Posted 15 July 2008 Monk, is it a figure of speech that your money will be on LTSB taking bradford and bingley over?
Raj Posted 15 July 2008 Posted 15 July 2008 This quote from that link would hurt A+L shareholders(er...like me ) "A&L is believed to have rejected an approach at around 600p from Santander earlier in the year" Monk is FT's man on the FTSE floor(If that is indeed a saying???!!!!)

I told them to sell at £12.00 but they didnt. i suppose it ws free money at the end of the day. I am reading santander will offer the money or 1 santander share per 3 A+L shares....

I thing JTB is more on the ball when it comes to these things! Difference is now that trading conditions have become much harder and if you read between the lines the BofE are actively encouraging them to be taken over as it takes a whole lot of stress off them in the short term. In the long term it's unfortunate that the niche players are being bought up by the larger banks, ultimately means less choice for customers. I don't have any real money on LTSB or B&B but I did have a one day trade on A&L yesterday. Nice
