ibbosuk Posted 29 July 2008 Posted 29 July 2008 The people who keep saying we need to sort our defence out need to stop looking at the final result and get to a Pre-Season game or two. Right I did the pre-season bit, and I still say...((((SORT THE FAKKIN DEFENCE OUT)))
Fox You Forest Posted 29 July 2008 Posted 29 July 2008 I actually enjoyed a home friendly.Bizzare. Actually a home game! Oh ok he was shit.
colbo68 Posted 29 July 2008 Posted 29 July 2008 I thought they played some very decent stuff tonight.Fryatt's was a good goal but everyone but the Birmingham defence knew he was coming inside and going to try and bend it round the keeper so it's not just our defence that looks a little rusty. I thought Clemence looked good for a change Mattock was steady. If Howard gets a starting place instead of Fryatt i may turn to self harm! Tunchev looked good aswell but you can clearly see he isnt match fit he was labouring near the end and nearly scored with a decent finish(at the wrong end) eh clemence?? were you at the game?
Fox You Forest Posted 29 July 2008 Posted 29 July 2008 eh clemence?? were you at the game? Was it not Clemence number 6?
Milky Posted 29 July 2008 Posted 29 July 2008 According to the lad behind me we had a player called "Kingchev".
Unabomber Posted 29 July 2008 Posted 29 July 2008 The people who keep saying we need to sort our defence out need to stop looking at the final result and get to a Pre-Season game or two. Exactly. Defence was good more so in the first half, I was pleased with Tunchev and happy that he didn't look out of place especially considering it was his first game for us. Midfield was quite promising once more although Dyer lacked some end product, although the woman behind me saying he was the new Newton needs to STFU. Levi was having a terrible game, and his goal saved him really, we were much more promising on the right. I thought that Oakley had one of his better games, and we seemed to control the ball for some long periods of time. Fryatt was superb and I never thought that I would be saying that, Howard allowed him alot of space and room to work in, Chambers and DJ were not as good in the second half, although Chambers was unlucky not to have scored. Was a good game and we didn't look outclassed, just superb finishing from Kevin Phillips won them the game.
SemperEadem Posted 29 July 2008 Posted 29 July 2008 Was there any trouble because from where i was at the cricket there seemed to be a police helicopter over the ground ?
Simi Posted 29 July 2008 Posted 29 July 2008 Was there any trouble because from where i was at the cricket there seemed to be a police helicopter over the ground ? I didn't see anything, I think we'll get that a lot this year though.
Fox You Forest Posted 29 July 2008 Posted 29 July 2008 yeah course it was Thats just down to my ignorance i refuse to pay £1.50 for a shitty little program with a poster in.
Houdini Logic Posted 29 July 2008 Posted 29 July 2008 Right I did the pre-season bit, and I still say...((((SORT THE FAKKIN DEFENCE OUT))) The four defenders that will most likely start conceded one goal first half against a team who were in the Premiership last season (and Brum had next to no chances apart from their goal). It was the same story second half at Hinckley - the decent defence that played second half only let in one goal. Fair play to Pearson for giving everyone a shot
Thracian Posted 29 July 2008 Posted 29 July 2008 Sounded very encouraging, both off the radio and from the phone call i've just received.Apparently, Tunchev was a rock. Which is also pleasing. If Tunchev was a rock then Kevin Phillips scaled him in minutes and placed his flag right on the summit. I appreciate it was his first game but if our new centre-back thinks he can play meandering continental football in England, pretend to be a poor man's Bobby Moore and take no responsibility for the runner then he's got another think coming. Phillips had a free header on the far post to score his first goal - the second time in a few days we've offered free headed goals on one post or another. And then when Mattock was outjumped by his opposite number in the last minute no-one picked up the smooth running Phillips who finished with all the class you'd expect of an ex-England striker but totally unchallenged and laughing at what was possibly a pathetic attempt to play him offside. Whatever, first question is did anyone issue instructions for dealing with Phillips and was anyone supposed to be taking responsibility for him? Because neither Morrison nor Tunchev bothered. Mattock was left totally exposed by the flick on of the man he was marking. He had no cover whatsoever. Kisnorbo might not be able to pass too brilliantly and he might not be be the quickest but he doesn't go awol when there's flak to be dealt with. He'd have been there, shoulder to shoulder, harrassing the bloke and putting a block in, no question. And whoever got free headers in City's box last season. Those defenders had their limitations but putting themselves about wasn't one of them. There were some good points. City controlled possession almost embarrassingly at times. Fryatt had his best game and scored his best goal for many a month and what a goal. Flick on from Howard to Fryatt on the right, characteristic cut inside and a wondrous left footer across and around the goalkeeper into the corner of the net. Big plus number two was Gradel. Adams had been subdued first half but when Gradel came on he promptly dribbled right through the Birmingham defence and his final ball would surely have resulted in a goal for DJ but for the most desperate of clearances for a corner. It was due notice of the torrid time the visiting defenders had ahead. Gradel delivered at least six dangerous crosses into the box in his one-half appearance including the sublime dribble and cross in restricted space which was half cleared only for the lurking Levi Porter to crack a brilliant equaliser at 2-2 three minutes from time and demonstrate to the hapless Wesolowski exactly how to finish with the goal gaping. I mention that because earlier Ashley Chambers had brought a save from a one-against-the-goalkeeper situation and the ball broke for Weso who didn't even threaten the open goal facing him with a shot that would have looked poor in a junior school playground. There was the encouragement of another two goals for City against theoretically quality opposition and the game indeed offered reasonable reassurance that we will, indeed, score goals for fun this season providing we play the people who can score and create them and who have the speed to open defences. But the defence conceded another three and the more worryingly because they hardly had anything to do apart from when Phillips came on for the last 20 minutes or so and could easily have helped himself to a hat-trick. Apart from the two he scored he broke clean through a second time but volleyed over. Truth is our back line is not good enough to play flat and work offsides. There's no doubt in my mind that James Chambers needs to be restored at right back. Chambers is fast, committed, full of attitude and will get a block or a challenge in when it's likely to hurt, no question. Mattock still looked vulnerable defensively, though he had a decent first hour or so going forward but my main complaint was about the second-half centre-backs, Morrison and Tunchev, who, while both did their good things, simply allowed themselves to get suckered. Mind you Tunchev's first half partner, Hobbs, didn't have to face Phillips and very grateful he should be about that. It was such a pity about our defensive marking because, overall, City played some smashing football at times and threatened the Birmingham defence on countless occasions particularly second half when Gradel, Chambers and Porter were probing away. In this period the support was better all round but first half, with Howard winning all sorts of flick-ons and Fryatt getting possession from so many, there just wasn't the support from midfield to press the advantage home. Kishishev started well enough but faded, Oakley was his usual good and bad self but never really threatened the attacking areas and there wasn't much to be seen of Dyer or Adams which must have been somewhat disappointing for the sizeable crowd. Man of the Match? Fryatt went close with his wonderful goal and always positive efforts, Porter had a special goal to remember but otherwise played his game simply rather than spectacularly but for me Gradel was the man who got the fans buzzing. There was expectation every time he got the ball. He varied the height and pace of his crosses, defended manfully at times, dazzled with the odd burst of individual skill and might even have won a penalty. In any Leicester X1 of mine he'd be the first name on the teamsheet.

Fair play to Pearson for giving everyone a shot just a quick summary from me. i went to the game. Thought birmingham have some serious problems good job they signed kevin phillips. Highlight of the game was gradel nutting murphy everyone around me was pissin themselves. Lowlight was mattocks lack of interest especially for phillips 2nd goal, kevin looked like he wanted to appologise after scoring that. Overall great freindly really enjoyed it and i think more of the same against palace and were all set for the start of the season just one last thing llyod dyer(who was shite) is annorexic right
Fez of Mahrez Posted 29 July 2008 Posted 29 July 2008 I thought we played well. Thought Hobbs was better than people are making out. Oakley is improving with every game too. Gradel is a star in the making, made Murphy look ridiculous. He just needs to play, simple as that. Same with Porter over Dyer. Saw Colin Calderwood in the stands. I reckon he was watching Oakley. Mattock is a goner on that performance too. Defence is obviously a little bit concerning but we won't be facing anyone anywhere near as good as Kevin Phillips, the man is a machine and a pleasure to watch.
