General Smuts Posted 30 July 2008 Posted 30 July 2008 Its a shame Sappleton can't perform without his lady in the stands for him.
Thracian Posted 30 July 2008 Posted 30 July 2008 Delighted for Porter, King and McKay. Another win and another goal for Kingy only emphasises the qualities he offers which are missing in the first team's central midfield. Porter is Porter, one of the best players we have at the club without question and a far better finisher, given chance, than he's usually credited for. As for McKay I often feel he's a bit like King in that he becomes a bit inhibited in more senior company when he'd perhaps do better being himself. McKay, ironically, is exactly the sort of striker we need with Gradel, Porter and company because he's so selfless. Campbell is lightning quick and Fryatt an awkward dribbler but neither are brilliant at releasing the ball at just the right moment because both are inclined to be greedy. McKay on the other hand always seems to see and play the simple ball, often after making intelligent narrow runs across the back of defences. He can be a clever and accurate finisher as demonstrated with his improvised tee up and volley at Quorn and is pretty well a banker for 15 goals or more in any season where he gets a good number of games. Yes he still looks lightweight but even teams like Liverpool - with Keene and Torres - seem to prefer pace and elusiveness up front to the more traditional centre-forward like Crouch for unlocking modern defences. United are the same. And unlike the bigger men, McKay is always a useful player when the ball's been lost. Sometimes it even appeared that he raced around too much and to the detriment of his attacking game but I think he's found a happy medium now. Interesting to see if he gets a look in anytime soon.

I really do hope so, played footie with him about 5 years ago i'd say, always was a great little player .. You say about him hunting the ball back down, doesnt surprise me really, use to be a defender
Thracian Posted 30 July 2008 Posted 30 July 2008 How O Neill didnt start after a decent performance vs Quorn is beyond me. It may seem strange in some ways but it's not that surprising. Magunda seems to be switched from right-bck to centre-back with no-one knowing for sure where he's best suited but, either way, he's not what I would call a genuinely attacking full-back whereas O'Neill looked exactly that and a player with considerable individual skill as well. However, that said, Magunda missed a lot of last season injured, has been given a short professional contract, and the club are doubless trying to give him every chance to return to his best form and to make something of his opportunity. Hopefully he will have made some progress in that direction tonight. Overall I think the Pearson regime has done quite well in keeping everyone involved and giving them all some proper time on the pitch which should ensure that every member of our first team/reserve team squad is fully fit for the season's start, something that clearly wasn't the case last year.

He certainly drops back into midfield areas quite comfortably and another sign of his quality is his consistency. Even when he's up against it he still puts in a shift and usually manages a player rating of between 6.5 and 8.0, rarely slipping below those parameters.

Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 31 July 2008 Posted 31 July 2008 How O Neill didnt start after a decent performance vs Quorn is beyond me. I thought O'Neill was one of the better defenders against Quorn. Linked up with the attacks well.
