Tommy G Posted 31 July 2008 Posted 31 July 2008 My girlfriend is from Mexico City so I guess mine is more "long distance" than most. It's a strange story. I was travelling for 9 months and she was studying a year in Australia but, we both met whilst travelling on the same backpacker bus in New Zealand. We got along really well and i liked her (thinking she was way out of my league) but was shocked when she told me just before we parted that she liked me too. Nothing more happened than a kiss and I guess we both expected that nothing more would ever come of it. When we went our separate ways (her back to Oz, me onwards to Fiji) we kept in constant contact through emails and eventually phone calls and a couple of months later, I decided that should I get the chance, I'd go and visit her in Mexico. Eventually, 6 months after seeing her last, I purchased my plane ticket and went to Mexico for 3 weeks with the attitude of "if something happens great, if not, i'll enjoy a nice holiday before I start my masters degree". I wanted to give myself the opportunity to see her again as i would have regretted it if not. Fortunately we got along great again and decided to give it a go as a couple (September last year). 4 Mexico trips later we are still going very strong. She has got a place to study a masters in London in September although, we have just found out that she failed to obtain scholarship funding and that her dad will not finance her (even though he is more than capable). The parents (dad especially) are hardcore catholics who would be uncomfortable with the idea of her in the same place as me. It's a strange situation, they like me and treat me very well whilst there, but i have to stay in a different house owing to the culture. Still, I suppose this goes to show that if you work hard enough, and want it enough, you can make it work and douse the cynicism which so many show when it comes to long distance relationships (or specifically, with a foreigner). Thats impressive mate, top stuff
Tommy G Posted 31 July 2008 Posted 31 July 2008 Same here, mine insisted on talking for at least an hour every day even when there was nothing that really needed saying.Just ended up asking me a thousand times if there was anything I wanted to talk about. Well then I can't understand the friggin' point of being with her? If you couldn't fill the time with anything to say, or anything interesting to talk about with her then why bother
Lillehamring Posted 31 July 2008 Posted 31 July 2008 Seeing as so many local relationships founder anyway I cannot see why you shouldn't just go for it.Besides, if the girl really is someone you want to be with, you've no real alternative, you'll move mountains... Of course there are problems. relationships mean problems whatever. But anything can be overcome with the right will and it's up to the two of you to work things out in a way that suits you. My 21-year-old youngest is touring America/Canada with his fiance of four years right now and whatever happens in the future they've already had the adventures of a lifetime. Skiing/snowboarding in the rockies, driving through hurricanes, the sights of California, rock climbing in the Grand Canyon, trip to Roswell, two weeks in Mexico, sun and seasports on Padre Island, Texas, enough air miles to get a free flight this time and an up close insight into life where it's usually over 100 degrees and where it rains twice a year if they're lucky. And all accomplished while the two of them completed school/college studies or qualified and worked in a chosen field with all the little problems those things have presented. So yes, it can be done and who knows where it will lead, if anywhere at all?. C'est La Vie. Just do it. um, thrac, i think by long distance he meant that the couple are seperated by a long distance, not that they have travelled a long distance in a relationship. seriously though, personally, i don't see the point, when the missus was in norway and i was stuck in england for a few months, it was awful, the whole point of a relationship is intimacy, companionship and sharing experiences - it was awful when i'd want to show her something (careful...) or tell her something and she wasn't there, for example,... but, it seems quite common over here i know a few couples who live quite distant, and get on ok - kinda seems like being single and chaste, i guess you have fewer arguments....
Raj Posted 31 July 2008 Posted 31 July 2008 I've literally no idea what you mean, but yes, I've renewed in exactly the same place, near the angry spotty boy Cya there pal! MikeyT Posted 31 July 2008 Author Posted 31 July 2008 Are you getting into one or something then mate, or just a random topic? Well yeah kinda. She's from Northampton but im moving down to Bournemouth in September for uni. Really like each other and im trying to convince her its the way to go, and as soon as i have any time off im going to be visiting her. Plus we live in the days of technology now so theres text, phone call, internet, webcam etc. I want to try and make it work. Think its worth it. Im under no illusion that it wont be difficult and i expect some speed bumps along the way, but im wanting to make a go of it as i think it will be worth it in the long run. Oh and thanks to all who have so far leant their advice and experiences! Helps alot! Special thanks to Thracian. Good advice!

Tabou Posted 31 July 2008 Posted 31 July 2008 Your my hero. Not when I tell you that I think she gave me crabs. Joke. She rang me 3 months after we split up as she was pregnant. I hung up. Never spoke to her since . Before you abuse me, I did hear on the grapevine that it wasn't mine, and now her and new man are a happy little family. She was older than me too. I was 17 and she 21/22.

And she never had it. I doubt she was ever preggers. She is 7 months gone now though, with new man. They seem happy, according to her FB. All's well that ends well.

I think a lot of the stuff you make up, to get attention off smaller minded people that actually believe the stories you tell.

I think your a ****ing mug, who preaches to people as if he has done it all and seen it all before. However, I shall let you assume what you like about me maximuscle. As you do not know me.
Tabou Posted 31 July 2008 Posted 31 July 2008 Careful, he'll bum you. I have seen pictures of Tommy G. He looks too much like John Merrick for my tastes.
Alexikokopops Posted 31 July 2008 Posted 31 July 2008 I have seen pictures of Tommy G. He looks too much like John Merrick for my tastes. To be honest, if you were bumming John Merrick then at least you wouldn't see his hideously disfigured face. Just imagine the size of his balls.
Dr The Singh Posted 31 July 2008 Posted 31 July 2008 Haha. Ironic. I was forced into having a 3some with my ex gf and her best mate. True Story. I also slept with said ex gf's brother. Tabou, you stud muffin, fancy a Singh tagging along with you on your next night out on the pull!!!
