Thracian Posted 4 August 2008 Posted 4 August 2008 think he wants it Gradel King Oakley Porter AdamsFryatt Gradel, Porter and Adams could be as flexible as you like. I really don't mind. The days have long gone when talented atttackers had to stay in one position. Fluidity is the modern approach and we've got the perfect players to take advantage. It's already known that Gradel can play on either flank and the manager has remarked that Adams can play anywhere across the midfield. Porter can play wide or inside so let them do so. All three are mobile, seemingly hardworking players and all can do their bit closing people down when necessary. The presence of all three would make it very risky for opposing defenders to push forward - in fact it might be tantamount to footballing suicide - thus meaning there would likely be less pressure on our defence than if we had a slower, more conventional line-up.
clazkel Posted 4 August 2008 Posted 4 August 2008 Adams and Fryatt linked up really well at Kettering (Adams was on the right) so it would be good for Adams to have a chance in central midfield to see how he gets on or play just in front of the midfield to support the strikers

Thracian Posted 5 August 2008 Posted 5 August 2008 This is the first time for years I've been conjuring with team selections and thinking "I don't really want to leave him out" instead of "he's shit or injured but we've no alternatives".

Thracian Posted 5 August 2008 Posted 5 August 2008 It's because this season is going to be fantastic. I do reckon we'll score five goals or more on several occasions. The Academy team of Gradel and Kingy showed no mercy when they got the opposition by the whotsits and with the likes of Adams, Porter, DJ, Fryatt, Dyer and even Howard (if he stays) you can really see some poor souls catching a walloping.

Daggers Posted 5 August 2008 Posted 5 August 2008 I do reckon we'll score five goals or more on several occasions. I think we should - but it will all come down to the momentum that is built up (or not) now. We have to hit the ground running and we have to chalk up a convincing win on Saturday, followed by a back2back league victory away at Stockport.
Ric Flair Posted 5 August 2008 Posted 5 August 2008 HendersonGilbert Tunchev Hobbs Mattock Gradel Oakley Kishishev Dyer Howard Campbell Subs: Logan, Worley, Adams, Porter, Fryatt I suspect Pearson will start with Fryatt though... I don't see why you are unhappy about that. Fryatt has been our best striker in pre-season by a country mile and DJ has been dog shit. Players should be picked on merit and a confident Fryatt, might, just might score a lot of goals at this level. Until DJ can find some sort of form, he's not worth persisting with. (You watch DJ go and nail a hat-trick now and Fryatt miss some standard open goals!  )

Thracian Posted 5 August 2008 Posted 5 August 2008 I keep thinking back to that analyst's "air of pessimism" that is supposed to be enveloping The Walkers. My pessimism evaporated almost from the time the forked-tongued Hollowords took his leave and right now I feel we're on the verge of a genuine new dawn. Suddenly our team is bristling with attackers. Opposing defenders won't easily be able to go 2 v 1 because there'll be threats from all quarters and people who can pass the ball fast enough to use those threats. All our forwards should benefit from the time and space the others around them create and my greatest concern now is us losing patience, getting over anxious and letting our frustrations show if things go wrong as they will on occasions, especially with a new defence. We the fans have to be encouraging. People like Gradel, Porter, Adams, Dyer amd DJ will take people on and look mugs on occasions. But we've got to keep doing what Pearson does and just urge them to have another go and another. And being fair I think that's already happened to a great extent. Once the breakthroughs come, confidence will soar and then I have no doubts that this team of ours can be a credit to behold. We know already that we'll have something to watch this season, people who can get around the back of defences or pass their way straight through em. But so many of our players now are the types who feed off the adrenalin generated by cheering fans and it is those fans perhaps who, more than anyone, who can lift our team onto a level which takes them beyond being mere entertainers and into the rarified heights of championship challengers. Pearson needs to play his part - by lifting people when they come up against a player who presents them with a defensive brick wall instead of dropping them into oblivion as has sometimes happened with other managers in the past - but basically we need to quickly get into the habit of winning and of sustaining pressure from start to finish whether we go one up or one down. Pessimism? I've rarely looked forward to a season more. Cos at long last I feel we're building a team to be proud of. Bring it all on cos I can hardly wait! :scarf:

Charnwood Norris Posted 5 August 2008 Posted 5 August 2008 Henderson Gilbert, Tunchev, Hobbs, MattockGradel, Oakley(cpt), AdamsPorterFryatt, Campbell I'd play Porter in the hole. Makes for a slimmer midfield but I think Gilbert should be encouraged to get forward more (Mattock will look to deliver with the left peg).

Playing Gilbert and Mattock as wing-backs, getting forward when attacking and back when defending. I like it!
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 5 August 2008 Posted 5 August 2008 We need to start well for the first time in a long time the first 6 games will dictate how the rest of the season goes i think
