James. Posted 7 August 2008 Posted 7 August 2008 Awhile ago I created THIS thread to see if there was any way we could introduce a database system for recording and analysing player ratings so as to produce the Foxestalk man of the match, player of the month, etc. Well it seems that it may not be possible in terms of programming time or whatever to get something automatic introduced to the site. I know sheffield_fox used to do something but that involved websites and to be honest I don't really know how he did it and I can't be arsed to find out. So basically I'm happy to put together a spreadsheet (I'm a spreadsheet geek, I'm aware of this) to record everyone's ratings after each game. I'll then use some very basic statistical techniques such as removing the highest and lowest score for each player to give the Foxestalk average. I'll exercise caution with rival supporters ratings (if they bother providing them) and also anyone's ratings that just look stupid. What would help is if everyone used the same format (i.e. player order) as the first person to post in a player ratings thread. Also only people that went to the game should post their ratings. Furthermore I do have other things to do in my life so I hope people are patient - I would hope to get the averages (and any other interesting statistics I can think of) published by Monday or Tuesday assuming a Saturday game. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions stick them in here.
General Smuts Posted 7 August 2008 Posted 7 August 2008 Clem, redtube is a much better waste of your time.
James. Posted 7 August 2008 Author Posted 7 August 2008 Clem, redtube is a much better waste of your time. I'm a sad bastard. I've never even been on redtube. I like numbers instead. My girlfriend is very proud.

Tommy G Posted 7 August 2008 Posted 7 August 2008 It's a good idea, but I think it will get distorted becuase a) People will post ratings who haven't been to the game, how can you prove they haven't? Do we send you ticket stubs through the post.. b) People will understate/overstate ratings Therefore the data and 'averages' you get won't probably reflect the players performance in a particular game, or over the whole season.

It'll be very sexy. It's a good idea, but I think it will get distorted becuasea) People will post ratings who haven't been to the game, how can you prove they haven't? Furthermore I'm sure people will be happy to state whether they have been to the game or not. I really don't see this as being a significant issue. b) Why? I can use statistics to minimise the effect of this anyway. I can "smooth" the data to omit inconsistencies while at the same time recognising the variety of opinions that people often have when it comes to rating players. Any ridiculous scores (relative to the others) can easily be spotted.
Cheese Me Posted 7 August 2008 Posted 7 August 2008 Sounds great to me. Look forward to seeing the results.
davieG Posted 7 August 2008 Posted 7 August 2008 I've already contacted Sheff Fox about resurrecting his site, he's now making arrangements with Mark to set something up for the MK game which he will gradually improve as the season progresses. Look out for a posting for the MK match.

thybluefox Posted 7 August 2008 Posted 7 August 2008 I could knock a database driven ratings system pretty easily i reckon.
