Bert Posted 9 August 2008 Posted 9 August 2008 Hendo 6 - Nothing to do. Gilbert 7.5 - Had a solid game today, always tight to his man, never gave him a second. Mattock 6.5 - Fairly solid, dealt with what he had to fairly well. Morrison 7 - Mostly good all round, positioning was sometimes not at 100%. Tunchev 7 - Pretty much the same as Morrison. Gradel 8.5 - The lad is awesome, never gives up, always looks to beat his man, if his crossing was better he'd be at a 9. Dyer 7 - Started off strong with some good runs, should've played Gradel in, never gave up though. King 7 - Started off stronger than Oakley, won a lot of niggly battles in midfield, seemed to just fade out of the game in the second half. Oakley 7 - Grew in confidence as the game went on, won his share and played some nice balls. Howard 6 - Didn't really offer that much, all he done was take their big centre back out of the game. Fryatt 8 - Effort, endeavour, work-rate and 2 goals. Dickov 6 - Made life hard for defenders, still closed down like he always did. Hobbs - Not on long enough.

I can definitely see room for a good partnership down the right with Gradel though. Tunchev 7.5 - Gareth who? Morrison 7 - Played very well today I thought, and made one very crucial block when we were just the one goal up. Mattock 6.5 - I was impressed with him today. Absolutely delicious ball to send Fryatt away that lead to the penalty. Gradel 8 - I love him. He's got so much confidence and it's so refreshing to see somebody attack the fullback like he does. Fantastic work for Fryatt's second goal. Oakley 6 - Fairly quiet game like his other central midfield partner but looked good in the tackle. Wish he'd shoot more though. King 6 - As I said, like Oakley he was quiet but he played well. I think we'll see a lot more of him this season. Dyer 6 - First half he got a lot of the ball and was always looking to do something constructive with it. Second half he was quieter but I think he's going to play a big part this season. Fryatt 7 - Are we finally going to see the good side to him? Two goals, what more can I say? Howard 5 - Has he changed at all? He still looks a right lazy bastard to me.

Morrison - 7 Mattock - 7.5 - One of his better games going forward. Gradel - 7.5 - Final ball could of been better, but otherwise great. Oakley - 8 - MOTM King - 7 Dyer - 7 - Wandered around a lot and tried to make things happen. Fryatt - 7.5 Howard - 7 Subs Dickov - 6.5 Hobbs - N/A.

The Reverend Posted 9 August 2008 Posted 9 August 2008 Hendo- 6 - Hardly owt to do. Mattock- 5 - Sell him for a few million and buy a more solid and reliable left back. Tunchev-7 - Excellent debut. Kisnorbo could learn a thing or two on how to rarely ever give the ball away. Deserved the standing ovation. Morrison- 6.5 - Solid, no nonsense, was a bit shaky though. Gilbert- 7 - Good pace, linked well with Gradel, has the making of a good partnership. Gradel- 7.5 - Another good debut, this lad has raw talent, with some nurturing, he could be a genuine quality player. King- 5 - Average first half, very poor second. I dont think he found a blue shirt in the second half. Oakley- 7 - Solid display from the skipper, rarely gave it away, kept it simple, could of had a goal. Good performance, more to come i feel. Dyer- 6 - Good start but drifted out of the game. A bit more consistency and we will have two genuinely scary wingers. Howard- 6.5 - Won a lot in the air,played a decent role until subbed. one thing i liked is that when he was subbed, he really clapped the fans, got straight off and gave dickov some real encouragement, instead of sulking off like he was last season. Fryatt- 8 - Different player. 2 good goals, good running, still more to come though. Keep it up. SUBS: Dickov- 6 - Not the fairytale homecoming he would of liked, but some selfless running and helped create the space that led to Fryatt's second. Hobbs - N/A - Did his job. Overall a good solid start to the season. The first 15 or 20 minutes were really good, but we seemed to take the foot off the gas when we scored, which isnt encouraging. We still dominated the first half though. In the second, they really came at us looking for the equaliser, and we capitalised on that by getting a good goal on the break. After that, it was easy. If they are one of the favourites to go up, i'd be staggered if we didnt get at least a play off position. MkDons just looked like they lacked ideas to be honest.

Legend_in_blue Posted 9 August 2008 Posted 9 August 2008 Enjoyed that one. What a good start. Deserved it too. Hendo - 6.5 - Took all the catches required. His distribution sometimes is a little predictable. Why insist on taking big boots upfield when the target man in Howard has gone? Play it short. Gilbert was available many times and he should have passed it there. Gilbert - Defensively 6 - Going forward - 7 - av. 6.5 - It was always more comfortable seeing him link well with Gradel than it was watching him chasing his man. A little suspect defensively but his willingness to go forward and make overlapping runs with Gradel was great to watch. Tunchev - 8 - If there was a better centre back performance in either League 1 or the Championship today, then name him. Total quality. Almost a 9 but his fitness level needs to improve a little. If he improves his fitness, performs like that again and scores in any games I will give him a 10. Morrison - 7 - He was solid. Sometimes his ball lacked direction but he didn't worry me. Mattock - 7 - He had their right sided player in his back pocket all game. Looked comfortable. Gradel - 8 - Carry on taking the mick out of big, lumbering centre halves. That had me in stitches. Very positive going forward, good feet, worked well with Gilbert. Squaring up to a lump 6ft tall was quite entertaining too. Hot headed. Good. I like it. If he works on his final ball, he will be a great player. King - 6 - Mmmmm, the weak link I think. Although tbh, I didn't notice him do too much wrong. Oakley - 7 - Started well and played in some good balls in the first 30 minutes. Went wondering a bit in the second half though. Needs to keep up the work rate throughout the second half. Dyer - 7 - I thought he looked quite bright. Got off to a good start and made some good runs. Fryatt - 7 - Took his penalty very well. Took his chance in the second half well. Howard - 7 - The effect of taking him off in the second half was plain to see. I thought he looked quite good. Linked well with Fryatt and made some good flick-ons. Didn't really have any chance on goal. People need to get off his back. Don't start having a go at him until he starts missing clear cut chances. Subs: Dickov - 6 - Despite coming on to huge applause, didn't do much. He'll do his bit though I'm sure as the season progresses. Overall I was happy with this performance. We need to sustain the tempo that we started with throughout these games though. We should then find ourselves finishing off the majority of sides by the end of the first half. MK Dons were poor. They only improved because we allowed them to. We need to apply the killer instinct quicker - but that'll come with confidence. And do we really need to be told Derby's result 4 times at the end of the game? Er, yes. But that was us last season. So all in all, solid start.
