Leicester City v Stockport County (Pre-Match Thread)

NP has said there will be changes for the match later today, and some people are saying that we should write this competition off and that the League should be the only priority. Fair enough, but last season's League Cup bought us 4 quality away days (Accrington, Forest, Villa, Chelsea)...this can be a magic competition...

Albeit, Stockport at home is a bit of a shite draw. But also 'tis an opportunity for fringe players etc to prove themselves. In response to the text i sent in to the forum...NP said that he wanted to win cup games and take them seriously, although obviously not as the main priority.

Still, I'll be there, wanting us to win as much as ever.

COME ON CITEHH!!!

Should be an entertaining match. I'm looking forward to seeing Adams / Porter stake their claims for the first team.

Yup, same over here. I'm also interested to see Kish in action, it's been a while.

It'll be a good game seeing as we have them later on in the week. Give us a chance to see how we'll set up on the Saturday. One of the perks of having a big squad like ours is that our 2nd team as it were will still be more than capable of winning. Touch wood.

I think it might be worth sticking with the same back four for this one and change the midfield four, strikers and 'keeper. We haven't got many options at right and left back and this could be a chance to see if others are capable of filling those two roles but personally, as Tunchev is new to England, Morrison is new to this level of football and Gilbert is new to the club, I'd like to see them play together again rather than chop and change it.

I agree. I don't think it'd be too wise to muck around too much, bearing in mind that Tunchev only had a few games in pre-season.

Sownd.

I understand your sentiments but don't know what they got to do that they haven't done already.

Looking forward to the game though and see no reason we shouldn't do our best in the competition just like we should everything else.

Football managers should want to win everything. Even a fun five-a-side. Establishing a winning mentality is so much a part of the battle in a football club.

We can't play everyone though, it is pretty obvious why Adams wasn't favoured ahead of Gradel, both have had equally impressive pre-seasons but Gradel has more experience at this level so an obvious choice. As for Porter, yes he's probably been more impressive than Dyer in pre-season but wasn't chosen because Dyer has played so many more competitive games and was very successful last season. All they have to do is keep training well, play to the best of their ability if given chances like tonight and bide their time, both are 21, it is hardly disastrous at this stage in their career that they are only on the fringes of the first team.

I'm going, hope the weather in Leicester is better than the monsoon over here on the Eastside. Looking forward to it, hope there's no extra-time though.

UP THE FOXES!! :scarf:

Luke O'neil is in the squad tonight according to himself!

Is he allowed to tell people outside the club that? :dunno:

I can't make it, but it's a good sign I couldn't make last years first one and we did quite well. Forest take 2, Villa and Chelsea were all great nights out. I'd love us to go on another run like that.

You've made my point. However well Porter plays he'll be overlooked as first choice because other players like Dyer or the lamentable Howard have more experience, have played more games and are doubtless on more money.

It's invariably the case with kids who come through the ranks as Gradel found out last season when he wasn't wanted at all because we preferred outside signings with more experience and as Dodds found out when he didn't get a chance at all for the same reason.

I can just imagine Howard explaining the situation to Porter:

"Okay son, yes, you ran Chelsea ragged before your injury, you've had a terrific pre-season, probably better than anyone else on the left what with the goals you scored and made but I've signed Dyer, I've got to play him, so hard luck."

I've always felt it's harder for resident players to get a break with in a new regime because the incoming manager usually takes over in a crisis, blames the residents for the club doing badly and signs his own preferred players. The fact that Porter didn't play last season will be incidental. With his age/experience/wages he makes an easier fall guy than others.
