AndyBrew Posted 23 August 2008 Posted 23 August 2008 half decent performance can't argue with the score line can't remember much in the way of flowing football though, the odd move now and again showing some glimpses, half decent opposition and I think we'll be getting a shock unless we raise our game. Solid game from Martin in goal one truely superb pluck out of the air and generally looked solid as a rock Very impressed with Howard won nearly every ball in the air but we still lack a striker who can anticipate these flick ons :frusty: All in all I'm a happy bunny though :chant:

Pluses Both strikers are scoring When we play the ball wide and on the ground we have pace and cause the opposition real problems. Defensively we look ok and there is less aimless passing. We are playing more as a team this season than last. We are winning even when we have not played well. Minuses Still don't look to have a top keeper. Our central midfield is a real weakness for me. The look lightweight and come the heavier pitchers later in the season could well struggle. Our crosses from open play are not very good. Left back needs to be sorted out. Still 7 points from games is a good return. I thought Tranmere were worse than MK to be honest and they didn't really create many clear cut openings. We were very poor for the first 20 minutes but between scoring and half time we dominated and probably should have had more than 1 goal. Also the first 10 minutes of the second half and the last minutes were good. Otherwise we really didn't show much at all. let's hope we win next week and at last get back to back league wins.

Ultra Posted 23 August 2008 Posted 23 August 2008 A good result, which takes us into a top-two spot. Let's hope we can keep it! Not a particularly fluent performance, though. The midfield duo of Oakley and King only performed intermittently, and the wide players, apart from a few Gradel setpieces, were largely inconspicuous. However, Fryatt managed another double ( ), even though his overall game was less than impressive. If his purple patch lasts as long as his barren run did, we'll wrap up the league by Christmas! But Hobbs and Morrison looked the biz again, and maybe Pearson will have a tough call to make when Tunchev and Kisnorbo are fit again. If we can scramble a few results like this on our travels, the signs for the season are promising.
mitchofox Posted 23 August 2008 Posted 23 August 2008 Everything that wasn't happening last season is happening now, we are the ones getting the late goals to kill the game rather than conceding late equalisers or last minute winners. The strikers are scoring and we are getting the ball into the box. Great start to the season lets hope it continues. What did my head in we had two blatent penalty appeals wave away the first on fryatt was pushed over in the box

demon_dog Posted 23 August 2008 Posted 23 August 2008 Think we struggled for the first 20 minutes, it was only when the goal had gone in that we seemed to start to playing with more conviction. After the Stockport cup match I said that I didn't seem that impressed with Martin in goal, all is forgiven, he had a much better game today. I didn't see him punch the ball away at all. He just needs to sort out his goalkicks, to many going into touch. A generally solid display from the defence, the midfield let us down at times. Howard I thought once again had a good game. Fryatt although he scored 2 goals, I am still not convinced as to his prowess as a striker. Definetely not on todays form a 15+ season man. I felt that on a few occassions today that rather than shoot at the first opportunity, he wanted an extra touch, thus giving the opposition chance to win the ball. Just hope that the more he plays the sharper he gets. Only time will tell.
lifted*fox Posted 23 August 2008 Posted 23 August 2008 great result! there were a few shakey moments, but generally I think the team played well. i don't think Dickov has really got the legs to work on that left wing. by the time he's caught onto the end of any longs balls, he's probably knackered and unable to finish. i thought we were playing better with Gradel in that posistion. the lads in defense need to stop shying away from tackles so much. at times they were just kinda doing a leg shuffle in front of the Tranmere attack and not getting into them at all, leaving them loads of time and space. i really think that Gilbert had a great game, making some important tackles! reckon he's going to shine this season. Fryatt was great imo too! great to see him chasing their defense and the keeper twice! was just happy to be back at the Walkers.

My only concern was why we took our foot off the gas at 2-0 instead of continuing to press. Yes, Tranmere were gifted a goal but we'd started conceding space by then and for the only time in the game we started to look negative. Pearson does so many things right but involving Dickov in a sort of wide inside-forward role didn't look like one of them at Stockport and it looked no better today.

I agree but Dyer was playing left-back and Levi looked knackered. Obviously not match fit yet and had to come off. Once we get the left-back sorted and Dyer and Levi are fighting for the wing, I'm sure Dickov will play more up-front.

When he was getting chants of "Pearson Gizza Wave" he carried on bollocking one of the players and giving out instructions and waited a few minutes before acknowledging the chants. A few other managers would have milked the moment but he recognised the game was far from over and got on with his job. We're not invincible but there's nothing to be afraid of in this division if Tranmere and MK are a benchmark.

After watching Holloway sit on his arse last season it was great to see Pearson dishing out the info. I was particually impressed when Tranmere had possession at the half way line, and he was keeping the Leicester players on lockdown, making them stay in posistion and force Tranmere back into their own half, rather than chase them out of posistion. V. good work!
