Tinnitus

Does anyone suffer from it? It drives me mad, for those of you who don't know what it is. It is constant ringing in the ear when you are in a silent environment, trying to fall asleep for example. It is literally torture. The more you listen to it, the more it gets louder and you hear new tones. Does anyone also get it on here?

My sister does, if that helps.

Never stops going on about it.

Sorry to hear that :(

Did is start after a car accident or similar?

I read that whiplash or back injury can cause it.

TMJ neuralgic pain can also precede tinnitus.

Yes, it's like trying to sleep in the middle of the M1 or EMA Runway. Plus all sorts of other sounds depending on the circumstances.

Last year Mrs and I went to Chemical Brother in Brum.

For 2-3 days after i had tinnitus.

It was horrible.

Mind you at the age of 37 serves me right for going to a Chem Bros gig!!!

Hope yours is just temporary,as it must be a bloody nightmare to live with.

Get well soon Buddy!

i have tinnitus. I had a car accident but i am not sure it started from that as i have also had a benign tumor removed from my middle ear. At times it drives me mad, at times i dont realise it is there, It is worse when i realise itis there and it seems to get louder. I am going to do the manchester 10k and raise money for Tinnitus awareness etc.

How long have you had it for?

One thing is for sure i used to enjoy pin drop silence when rlaxing but that is no more, I am not sure if it iwll ever go away and it does impact my hearing.

There's no cure for it and I have no idea how I got it.

What did the medical men(women) have to say about both your problems?

I honestly don't know, apparently 100's of millions of people have it. Bloody irritating though.

I have had the benign tumor growing for a whil - it was quite far gone and had an ear infection at christmas which mixed with the tumor and never cleared - as the infection never cleared i was referred to a specialist. Dr Banarjee is a specialist in ENt. He sent me for a CT scan and did some tests he told me what i had and did the operation. 2 of the 3 bones in my middle ear have also been removed as they were infected badly. I think in my case the primary aim is to make sure the growth does not come back.

In relation to the Tinnitus, from the discussions i have had and the reading i have done there is no known treatment and it is a percieved sound - or in other words there is no test to measure the volume of the sound as it cannot be heard by anyone but the person who hears it in their ear. The treatmens are more to do with how to cope with it rather than how to fix it.

Do you have any pain in your face or in your ears?

No not really, some people have it real bad and even killed themselves over it. It's only the ringing, it can feel like it is painful if you listen to it enough.

Btw, I'm not asking for sympathy because my family can do that but just to see if anyone on here gets it.

I've got a really mild version of it thanks to a couple of live music venues cranking things up to eleven - had what I'd expected to be a couple of days of ringing in my ears and rather than go completely it just settled down to a low level and irritates the hell out of me whenever I try and sleep - I have to keep the window open so I can hear the wind in the trees to distract me from it, but its not bad enough to bother me during the day as I can't hear it unless its very quiet around.

the taste and facial nerve go through the middle ear, they were both at risk when i had the benign tumor taken out, in my case the left ear is the problem. The facial nerve controls the left side of the face and the taste nerve controls the left side of the tongue etc. both are ok i must add.
