Brainy Posted 20 September 2008 Posted 20 September 2008 Isn't Stuart Atwell that new 25 year old referee? Oh dear
Unabomber Posted 20 September 2008 Posted 20 September 2008 At any level of football that is absolutely diabolical.
James. Posted 20 September 2008 Posted 20 September 2008 Here's the nutjob himself declaring that awareness is a key component of assistant refereeing.
Matt Posted 20 September 2008 Posted 20 September 2008 Do we need any more proof that we need video technology? Certainly technology of some sort. What does the resident referee (DB11) think of this farcical refereeing? Can you justify it? Can you excuse it? For example, We a win on the last day of the season to have stayed up, What if come the end of the season Watford were in our situation needing the win and they didn't get it, This 'goal' has cost Watford. Everyone makes mistakes, All teams reap the rewards of dodgy decisions throughout the season but this? This is just pathetic, unexcuseable.
James. Posted 20 September 2008 Posted 20 September 2008 I don't think this can be used as an argument for video technology. This is just demonstration of an appalling, appalling decision. F**k me, if we need video replays to show a football went 4 yards wide of a goal instead of in it then what the hell does that say about the quality of refereeing in this country?

F**k me, if we need video replays to show a football went 4 yards wide of a goal instead of in it then what the hell does that say about the quality of refereeing in this country? Exactly but if referee's/assistants can't tell if it has gone in or not when it went 4 yards wide then how can we rely on them to make harder decision's correctly? In response to - What the hell does that say about the quality of refereeing in this country? - Very poor, has been for years, and only going to get worse.
DJ Barry Hammond Posted 20 September 2008 Posted 20 September 2008 Just reading it I don't understand - I'm going to have to see this one. But one thing does strike me - 11 Reading players, a manager and 5 substitutes must all have went along with what was happening - which disapoints me a little. Sport gets it's name from being a sporting contest - the need to win at all costs in football detracts from the spirit of the game. (much like after an injury kicking the ball back to the opposition but in a poor position - just give it back or not at all!)

This is my point. Video technology gives referees a get out of jail free card. I agree that technology needs to be introduced but only when the quality of refereeing is at a standard when it will only be required in exceptional circumstances and not to make up for the deficiencies of the referees.

But then again, the introduction of Hawk Eye in cricket helped the umpires and the standard rapidly increased. True it's slightly different as the umpires are being asked to predict something no-one actually knows what would happen - including Hawk-Eye! But then cricket again were very quick to introduce camera's for run-outs, again a job that was ni on in possible for umpires. I suppose run-outs are closer to goal line decisions than my first example. So get these blooming camera's in for god sake! I blame FIFA!
Father Ted Posted 20 September 2008 Posted 20 September 2008 I really cannot wait for the Championship any longer...

Well the Assistant Referee is going to have been level with the ball on the goal line. What he will have seen is the ball cross the line, and with the net and posts etc. in the background it could easily have caused some sort of illusion as to indicating that the ball crossed the line inbetween the goal posts and underneath the cross bar, thus a goal being awarded. I think that this is where the Referee should have intervened and realised that the ball going out of play was not in fact between the goal put over the goal line next to it, thus a goal kick / corner should have been given. It was a mistake, but this will probably cost the official(s) for a long time. No chance of getting very good appointments and I wouldn't be surprised if he was even rested for a few games. I have no idea about any of this but from what I've seen this is what I'd guess....
Durnerz Posted 20 September 2008 Posted 20 September 2008 I don't want video technology. If we had it then we wouldn't have a controversial incident like this to discuss amongst many others, football is a game of opinions and camera's will take all that away.
Sods Posted 20 September 2008 Posted 20 September 2008 Hahaha, have we had that lino before looks awfully like the plonker at Sheff Yanited last season.

Davies' foul on Clichy earlier - we all watched the replays in the pub earlier, 50% thought it warranted a red, 50% a yellow. football matches will become 100+minutes long, referees will be under pressure to stop games at every possibly debatable event. football would become boring and we'd have nothing to talk about. train refs to understand what is and isnt a goal and leave it at that.
DB11 Posted 20 September 2008 Posted 20 September 2008 Isn't Stuart Atwell that new 25 year old referee?Oh dear Yes. I went to a talk the other night by Howard Webb and he said he easily thinks Stuart will get FIFA Referee in a season or two.

How is that punishing these officials? What it is doing is punishing the teams at the lower level having to put up with these pisspoor officials, just because there/were at a lower level why should we/other teams have to put up with them?
Libertine Posted 20 September 2008 Posted 20 September 2008 Hahaha, have we had that lino before looks awfully like the plonker at Sheff Yanited last season. The picture is of the ref, not the lino. And (Pike) looked nothing like that.

Ultra Posted 20 September 2008 Posted 20 September 2008 If the reports are true (and we'll see tomorrow) than all the match officials involved should be given an unpaid holiday for at least a month. With the money that fans pay to watch matches, they deserve far better than this.

It's just the way it goes, chin up watford/ reading whoever was cheated hope you get a break next week. Referees are part and parcel of football, always have been always will be, we've survived over 100 years without technonogy, why now?
Lovejoy Posted 20 September 2008 Posted 20 September 2008 Would they even have video technology in League 1?
