Another thing to add. If you book with them, they send a pack through the post with maps and guides and other stuff about the place you are going, some really good stuff that would cost you at least a ten pound note from a bookshop.

Gites are fantastic.

'cept the ones that smell like arse farmage.

We had one like that. Poor.

We also had a brilliant one that was built and kitted out by a fellow Brit, so there weren't even a need for converter thingies for the lectric.

Any of the uk based camping companies (Keycamp, Eurocamp etc) are good and have good activities for the kids and (most importantly) ensure that the facilities (mobile homes, tents, washblocks as well on site facilities such as bars and shops) are of a decent standard. This is important as they are just taking blocks in locally - owned campsites and the poorly organised ones allow people to pitch their tents without much regard for where they are allowed to go and you might end up with unwanted guests all over your patch Not to mention non-existent or unhygienic facilities

We have stayed at a couple of Keycamp owned sites in France which have been absolutely first class.Don't know if Eurocamp have gone into ownership.

Royan is a very nice city and the whole of the Cote Sauvage has great beaches and a micro climate which means that while you can get spectacular thunderstorms during the night the days are usually very warm and sunny.

There is a brilliant zoo at La Palmyre - (designed with younger kids in mind I believe) and a brilliant Michelin -starred restaurant at Saint palais sur mer (believe) called la biche au bois or something similar- brilliant value and fabulous terroir food.

Finally - depending on your route down watch out for new motorway links avoiding Paris which will save you a lot of time . Bonnes vacances- travelogue over- think we'll beat Colchester tonight?

I can't remember the last time a thread was filled with so many positive replies.

Thanks everyone - seeing as I'm not going anywhere tomorrow I reckon I'll book it up.

Anyone used the online voucher for 25% off? I'll be amazed if it works but I'll give it a go.
