Jay Posted 8 October 2008 Posted 8 October 2008 Well it’s finally here!! Jays Foxestalk mix 3 is here I am afraid for some of you this might not be your cup of tea, well Mark anyway BUT it seems that Electronic / Hip Hop goes down far better on here than Guitar based stuff so here goes… Track Listing / Words of Wisdom / General nonsense 1 Max Romeo – Chase the Devil You will probably all know this song as it was used on The Prodigys out of space but this a great old school reggae song. 2 Wayne Wade – Man of the Living More old school reggae from the album Jesus Dread by Yabby You. 3 Massive Attack ft Horace Andy – Man Next Door Horace Andy has a really distinctive voice and has been a long time collaborator with Massive Attack, this time bringing this classic reggae song up to date with this dark, moody version. 4 Thievery Corporation – (The Forgotten People) Taken from the new album excellent down tempo tune. 5 Rae & Christian – Anything You Want With me and James flapping on about this album all the time you would think that I was Rae and he was Christian but this is a song from a very underated album from the Late 90’s 6 DJ Cam – Broadcasting Live Chilled out, downtempo Hip Hop from my favourite French Hip Hop Producer 7 Quannum – The Extravaganza Quannum are some of the best MC’s around with the likes of Shadow, Blackalicious, Latryx all involved you can’t ask for more. 8 Kail – Peter Pennyworth From Big Dada Records this is sample driven abstract Hip Hop and it’s most bizarre. 9 Dangerdoom – The Mask ft Ghostface Killer does what it says on the tin 10 Deltron 3030 – Mastermind Dan the Automator, Kid Koala and Del the funky Homosapien what more could you ask for! 11 Handsome Boy Modeling School – The Truth The Automator again… 12 4 Hero – Star Chasers Drum & Bass concept album you say… I love this album so much it’s chilled out, jazzed up Drum & Bass at it’s finest. 13 Roni Size – Heroes (2008 version) New Forms was not just an amazing album in it’ own genre it was one of the finest albums in any genre of the 90’s and Heroes is one of the stand out tunes. 14 London Elektricity - Attack Ships on Fire Sounding like a modern day Morricone film score police chase type thing from the latest album, cracking tune. 15 Coldcut – More Beats & Pieces (Lord Fader mix) Loops, Samples, weird noises loads of scratching exactly why I love Coldcut well I hope you have enjoyed this mix!! your thoughts and comments would be appreciated!!! the link again
hairy Posted 8 October 2008 Posted 8 October 2008 Grabbing it now. Love DJ Cam's Substances but thought he went off the boil after that so I look forward to hearing that track. I already have the first 5 tracks so I can only say your musical tastes are impeccable
Joe. Posted 8 October 2008 Posted 8 October 2008 Downloaded and ready to play later after I've played football. As an aside, I think it would be a good idea to do what Jay's don and explain song choices?
Joe. Posted 8 October 2008 Posted 8 October 2008 Right, I'll be the first one to review then. I've not heard one of these songs, and only previously heard some London Elektricity and a little bit of Coldcut. Here goes: 1. Max Romeo - Chase The Devil I recognise this from Jay-Z, he must have sampled it in Lucifer. Liking the reggae. 7.5/10 2. Wayne Wade - Man Of The Living This is not my cup of tea personally, the song just didn't seem to go anywhere for me. I have confidence the next track will be better. 3/10 3. Massive Attack - Man Next Door Can't say I like this as much as other Massive Attack songs I've heard previous to this to be honest, sorry Jay! I'm just waiting for a song that will make me really listen. 5/10 4. Thievery Corporation - (The Forgotten People) I quite liked this one to be honest, very pleasant on the ears. Getting better, this one gets approval. 6.5/10 5. Curt Cazal/ QBall/ Rae & Christian - Anything U Want Ah this is more like it, I was waiting for some decent hip hop. Combines the relaxed feel of the last track in ways with this genre. 7/10 6. Channel Live/ DJ Cam - Broadcasting Live Interesting combinations in this one, not quite sure what to make of it to be honest, but there's just something about it I don't quite like... 5/10 7. Quannum/ Souls of Mischief - The Extravaganza [street] I really don't know what to say about this track...better than the last one for sure. 6/10 8. Kail - Peter Pennyworth Yes, this is much more like it. Love this track after a few more listens and it's one I'll keep on listening to. Big fan. 9/10 9. Danger Doom - The Mask Like the previous track, I like this one too. Particularly a fan of the brass work in the track. It's looking like the more modern hip hop tracks are getting the thumbs up from me... 9/10 10. Deltron 3030 - Mastermind Is this the guy who features in the Gorillaz 'Clint Eastwood'? It sounds like him. As for the track itself, I'm impressed. 8/10 11. Handsome Boy Modelling School - The Truth Not bad this. Not bad at all. 6.5/10 12. 4 Hero - Star Chasers Well this is interesting. I like the chilled out jazz concept of this one with the subtle drum and bass. Nice little mixture this one's got going for it. 7.5/10 13. Roni Size - Heroes Didn't think this one was going to go places at the beginning, but it certainly works itself up to a good track. Looking forward to the London Elektricity track next... 7/10 14. London Elektricity - Attack Ships On Fire Cheers for this one Jay, enjoyed it a lot. This has just proved to me why I need to have a dig around for the new album. 8.5/10 15. Coldcut - More Beats & Pieces (Lord Fader Mix) I'm expecting to like this a lot. I've heard a little bit of Coldcut from Pearson Towers previous to this. I can't help but not like this, it's much more my kind of thing. These last two tracks have been perfect. 8.5/10 As you can see, I didn't think much to this one to begin with Jay but it definitely improved for the better of my tastes. I can go away from this with a few more songs to add to the heard list and the nudge I needed to download London Elektricity's album. Absolutely loved tracks 7,8 and 9 second time around and they'll stay in my Itunes to be listened to again that's for sure! Cheers Jay.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 8 October 2008 Posted 8 October 2008 That's probably the least descriptive review I've ever read. I assume you just didn't want to spoil it for everyone else, Joe?
Joe. Posted 8 October 2008 Posted 8 October 2008 That's probably the least descriptive review I've ever read. I assume you just didn't want to spoil it for everyone else, Joe? There's clearly been less descriptive reviews in the past definitely! I just really can't think what to say to be fair...
Samilktray Posted 8 October 2008 Posted 8 October 2008 Im dreading what will be said about my review.
Jay Posted 9 October 2008 Author Posted 9 October 2008 Im dreading what will be said about my review. just review it!! if you think they are all crap songs say so!! it's all about personal taste if you can find a couple of tracks from each mix that you take forward then it's doing it's job
Fez of Mahrez Posted 9 October 2008 Posted 9 October 2008 There's clearly been less descriptive reviews in the past definitely! I just really can't think what to say to be fair... Im dreading what will be said about my review. Sorry, I'll button it from now on. Couldn't resist.
Joe. Posted 9 October 2008 Posted 9 October 2008 Jay, just listened to your mix again earlier and I've got to say I enjoyed it much, much more second time around. In particular I thought Peter Pennyworth, The Mask and Mastermind were all fantastic. I gave them good ratings first time around but I feel the need to improve them Overall I found it to be a much better mix on the second listen, good stuff!
hairy Posted 9 October 2008 Posted 9 October 2008 1 Max Romeo – Chase the Devil Brilliant. One of my fav reggae songs. 2 Wayne Wade – Man of the Living Not as good as Max but great all the same 3 Massive Attack ft Horace Andy – Man Next Door Not got this version so thanks. Cant beat the original though 4 Thievery Corporation – (The Forgotten People) You are correct it is a good tune. 5 Rae & Christian – Anything You Want Top tune from a good combo. 6 DJ Cam – Broadcasting Live Oh dear. This is where the quality of your compilation starts to go down hill for me I'm afraid. Nothing new and I dont really go for the rap. The tune underneath is solid and so much more could have been done with it. 7 Quannum – The Extravaganza Spacey feel to it but nothing too exciting. 8 Kail – Peter Pennyworth Hmmm. Hip hop. Sorry I'm bored of it atm. It needs a new sound / feel to it to get me interested again. I really dont care about what he thinks of the police, DA, his girlfriend or his Mum. Maybe I'm getting old but its all starting to sound the same to me. The worst track of the lot for me. 9 Dangerdoom – The Mask Not my cup of tea. 10 Deltron 3030 – Mastermind Hip hop again. its much better than the last two. Nice tune but again I struggle to relate. 11 Handsome Boy Modeling School – The Truth Good start but then the rapping comes in again. 12 4 Hero – Star Chasers Good tune but not for me. Jazz fussion with too much jazz, if you follow me. 13 Roni Size – Heroes (2008 version) I like this one! 14 London Elektricity - Attack Ships on Fire All a bit busy this one for me. I prefer Roni. 15 Coldcut – More Beats & Pieces (Lord Fader mix) Like the scratching but again a bit all over the place for me. Thanks for the up Jay. It started well on farmiliar ground for me but I struggle with hip hop these days. Maybe its too much Kanye on the radio. I cant relate to it anymore. The artists I picked up from your last compilation make up for the lack of new music here for me. Your still winning in my book
Samilktray Posted 9 October 2008 Posted 9 October 2008 Right, here we go then... 1.) Chase The Devil - Max Romeo. I love this already, maybe partly because the sample for 1 of my favourite songs came from it. Really nice and laid back, makes me want to look into getting more reggae stuff. 2.) Man Of The Living - Wayne Wade. I like the feel of this track, sounds really rough and scratchy as if its been poorly mastered, but it works well for me. Quite a dark sounding song, its decent but it fails to do a lot for me otherwise. 3.) Man Next Door - Massive Attack. Love the bassline to this at the beginning love it! and the beat just progresses upwards, fantastic. Quite enjoyed this one, good beat, and the bass sounded great. 4.) (The Forgotten People) - Thievery Corporation. I like the beat to this 1 once again, being someone whos very interested in the production side of music I've been kept fairly happy by this mix so far. I do think that this beat had a lot more potential, I just dont think the production was done any justice by the vocals on this, could see someone like Common fitting onto this well... could just be my Hip-Hop side coming out though! 5.) Anything You Want - Rae & Christian. Here we go then, bit of Hip-Hop, loving the production on this, and the duo rapping on it make me think of a cross between The Roots and early Mobb Deep. Yeah I like this a lot. 6.) Broadcasting Live - DJ Cam. More Hip-Hop, keep this up and im very happy. More upbeat than the previous and once again im fairly impressed by this, nice and easy to listen to. Makes me think of just chilling out on warm summers night, love it. 7.) The Extravaganza - Quannum. This is pretty good again, just read the last few songs, I have pretty similar views on this and them. 8.) Peter Pennyworth - Kail. Is this Del The Funky Homosapien? Sounds very similar if not, and I love that guy, this song has a very odd vibe to it for me, but I really do like it. Its fantastic when the beat switches up, great stuff. 9.) The Mask - Dangerdoom. This is what I was looking forward to hearing most, and as soon as it kicked in it cemented itself as my favourite track so far, love the beat and the agressive lyricism, Ghostface being on there was a fantastic bonus. Will definetly look into more stuff by these. I love this. 10.) Mastermind - Deltron 3030. Ive already heard this, and the album its taken from is probably my favourite recommendation from an FT member. Everyone with an interest in Hip-Hop should check out this album in my opinion. 11.) The Truth - Handsome Boy Modeling School. Nice and laid back beat, and some nice vocal sampling too, just my kinda thing this. Expected something to happen on this as it was starting to get a bit boring, the rapping coming in was welcomed, nice track. 12.) Star Chasers - 4 Hero. Fairly boring track for me, sorry to say. Its not a bad track, it just doesnt do a lot for me. 13.) Heroes - Roni Size. Im liking this, always nice to hear some proper Drum N Bass. I love stuff like this, really puts crap like Pendulum in its place (Sorry to mention them in your mix Jay). 14.) Attack Ships On Fire - London Elektricity. I do like a bit of London Elektricity, another recommendation from FT, this track is no different, I like it. 15.) More Beats & Pieces - Coldcut. I noticed the same scratching sample at the very begining of this to that used in 'Get Busy - The Roots'. I love the scratching throughout this, just screams old school to me! The numerous switches in beat I also like a lot. In summary I enjoyed the majority of this mix Jay, I loved the Hip-Hop in it, which should come as no surprise. Ill definetly check out 1 or 2 artists on show in this sooner or later. Cheers for this.
Bert Posted 9 October 2008 Posted 9 October 2008 I can safely say I've never heard of any of these artists.
lildave3 Posted 9 October 2008 Posted 9 October 2008 Jays mix contains reggae and hip-hop? Why didn't you say so! I'm on it.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 10 October 2008 Posted 10 October 2008 I can safely say I've never heard of any of these artists. Some of them I can understand, but Massive Attack? Coldcut? Roni Size? Download and LIVE!

Jay Posted 13 October 2008 Author Posted 13 October 2008 Coolmo.I'll grab that soon! Hope there are some emo delights on there. Boy am I looking forwards to Smutttttts' effort. no emo at all I am afraid and no lo-finess at all and nothing a little quirky... but that doesn't seem to go down well on here so I have catered for the majority. I fear you may be disappointed check out the The Wave Pictures they are my lo-fi recommendation of the week they toured and played on Darren Haymans tour and album
The People's Hero Posted 13 October 2008 Posted 13 October 2008 no emo at all I am afraid and no lo-finess at all and nothing a little quirky... but that doesn't seem to go down well on here so I have catered for the majority.I fear you may be disappointed check out the The Wave Pictures they are my lo-fi recommendation of the week they toured and played on Darren Haymans tour and album I put a Wave Pictures track on my last effort. Everyone hated it. I quite like them. I'll check yours out mate. It'll get a week's play in my car to and from work every day and then an intense reviewing listen after 5 or 6 plays through. That's commitment.
