Lovejoy Posted 27 October 2008 Posted 27 October 2008 What are people's opinions of our captain? What are his strengths? How does he lead the team? What does he do for the team? I have to admit, I'm not impressed. Maybe he'd be better with a different style of midfield partner. I've no doubt he posesses ability, but since moving here he just hasn't impacted on games in the way he did for Southampton and Derby. Thoughts?
dandannieldanok Posted 27 October 2008 Posted 27 October 2008 One of the least inspirational captains I've seen Leicester have during my support of the club. I don't rate him much as a player either.
Benji Posted 27 October 2008 Posted 27 October 2008 Personally I think he brings a lot to the team as a player but nothing as a captain
JakeShingler Posted 27 October 2008 Posted 27 October 2008 Personally I think he brings a lot to the team as a player but nothing as a captain Yeh agreed. Can not wait for Clemence to return.
Lovejoy Posted 27 October 2008 Author Posted 27 October 2008 he isnt our captain clemence is You know what I mean smart arse . Oakley has been captain every league game so far this season .
The Stig Posted 27 October 2008 Posted 27 October 2008 Best captain we've had since Stephen Clemence.
Salieri Posted 27 October 2008 Posted 27 October 2008 Was delighted when we signed him, thought he'd be a real asset. Has been largely disappointing however imo. Definitely not captain material, we need someone far more vocal who can grab the game by the scruff and really rally the players and gee up the crowd. Felt the same when we signed Clemence who has also been a bit of a let down, having said that i wish he'd hurry up and get fit because we need a bit more competition in the middle of the park.
Jimmy Posted 27 October 2008 Posted 27 October 2008 get rid, for someone that should be a cut above in this league he is largely one of the most anonymous players on the pitch, extremely lightweight (going as far as to not attempt tackles on people less then 5 yards away from him) the wages he is on are considerably higher then Andy King's but his performance level is hardly any different, sell him and use the money to get a couple of players including 1 or 2 direct replacements

JoeyB Posted 27 October 2008 Posted 27 October 2008 He seems to be a good player and one that can turn a game with an super pass, but this game turning Oakly does not appear too often
Nath. Posted 28 October 2008 Posted 28 October 2008 Kisnorbo should be given the armband now he is back. Much better captain than either clemence or oakley, More deserving, he alwyas puts in a good performance.
SamL Posted 28 October 2008 Posted 28 October 2008 Personally, I think we all know he's good player but he just doesn't show it often enough. He lacks consistency and doesn't seem to possess any captaincy qualities.
shen Posted 28 October 2008 Posted 28 October 2008 Personally, I think we all know he's good player but he just doesn't show it often enough. He lacks consistency and doesn't seem to possess any captaincy qualities. How on Earth did he captain two clubs before us then?
SamL Posted 28 October 2008 Posted 28 October 2008 How on Earth did he captain two clubs before us then? Fair point. He hasn't exactly shown them while he's been here has he? He doesn't really do the things you'd expect your captain to do.
Tevez Posted 28 October 2008 Posted 28 October 2008 One of the least inspirational captains I've seen Leicester have during my support of the club. I don't rate him much as a player either. You in the dressing room before during and after games then?
Munzie Posted 28 October 2008 Posted 28 October 2008 I've always preferred a captain to be one of our central defenders. This position allows the player in question plenty of vision of the game. Also, it allows someone to command the back four (especially important currently with our nervous looking loanee keeper). As Tunchev's english is probably a little shakey, Kisnorbo would also be my choice.
Uncle Albert Posted 28 October 2008 Posted 28 October 2008 Yeh agreed. Can not wait for Clemence to return. For what reason? Clemence isnt as good as people are making out. Oakley is a brilliant player and we are lucky to still have him at the club. For people saying Oakley isnt much of a captain. Jog on. He was captain for Southampton in the biggest league in the world so if he can lead his team there he can lead us in League One and further. I notice people are now slating his credentials as captain since we have hit a slump, not when we were coming from behind late in games to seal wins. Some people just cant win.

Err, check my ratings of him all season . They've hardly changed since day 1 .
Uncle Albert Posted 28 October 2008 Posted 28 October 2008 Err, check my ratings of him all season . They've hardly changed since day 1 . Did I mention you specifically?
Bert Posted 28 October 2008 Posted 28 October 2008 He's a class player. For people to say he doesn't speak to his players, how the fook would you know?
SamL Posted 28 October 2008 Posted 28 October 2008 I like him as a player, I don't just don't think he's shown us what he can do when it comes to the captaincy role. As your captain, you're looking to him to be making crunching tackles and getting stuck in, motivating the players on the field and to be setting a good role model, I just don't think he's done these on a consistent bass. Anyway, it's only my opinion. Other people may have noticed things I haven't.
Raj Posted 28 October 2008 Posted 28 October 2008 If i was writing a School Report- Matthew has alot of ability but is not using it to his potential. He needs to pass on his knowledge and experience and nurcher some of his younger team mates. His quality is unquestionable but he's abit of a lazy cvnt. Oh and the skinny basterd needs to bulk up abit... Perhaps the last couple of sentances wouldnt really be in a school report would they?
Thracian Posted 28 October 2008 Posted 28 October 2008 He's been better this season in a better side and I do think he's made an effort both as player and captain. On the plus side he and King have been demonstrably effective in their covering and as a support for the attack because we've conceded few goals, indeed few chances and we've scored reasonably well. On the downside Oakley's presence means King tends to get the defensive role which restricts his threat as an attacker while himself is not a great driver into the box these days and is nothing like the same goal threat. Weso was a more mobile midfielder than our skipper but he too was no great threat going forward either. Lots of times I've said Porter should have been tried there, he's a better attacker than oakley and weso, but no-one has been allowed to threaten oakley's place either of the staff already on the books nor via an additional signing. It's as if we simply refuse to acknowledge the problem and mention of wage levels suggests to me it's down to yet more internal politics as I suspected and said would be the case right from the off. Don't mistake me. Oakley's done alright this season. But we need to have and to use an alternative. He's nowhere near good enough for special privileges or special wages from anything I've seen since he came here.
Joe. Posted 28 October 2008 Posted 28 October 2008 Not impressed if I'm honest. He'll show some signs of real creativity at times, but it doesn't happen enough. As a captain he often goes missing him games along with King, and he doesn't take the game by the scruff of the neck when it's needed. I'd like to see him have more efforts on goal too - he's often in good positions to shoot on the edge of the area but then insists on passing it to somebody else. Whether that's his decision or Pearson's to do this I don't know.
