_56644739_56644221.jpgRhein II is one of an edition of six works

An image of the Rhine by German artist Andreas Gursky has fetched $4.3m (£2.7m) at Christie's New York, setting an auction record for a photograph.

Glass-mounted panoramic colour print Rhein II, created in 1999, is one of an edition of six works.

Others hang at New York's Museum of Modern Art and London's Tate Modern.

It beat the previous record of $3.9m (£2.5m) achieved by an untitled 1981 colour print by Cindy Sherman, who is the subject of all her own works.

Christie'sGursky's print had a pre-sale estimate of $2.5m-$3.5m (£1.6m-£2.2m).

Rhein II is the largest of the six photographs, which are produced in various sizes.

As well as in New York and London, other photographs in the edition are housed in Munich's Pinakothek der Moderne and Glenstone art museum in the US.

Gursky has spoken of "a particular place with a view over the Rhine which has somehow always fascinated me, but it didn't suffice for a picture as it basically constituted only part of a picture".

He said he "carried this idea for a picture around with me for a year-and-a-half".

"In the end I decided to digitalise the pictures and leave out the elements that bothered me," he added.

Christie's said the viewer was "not invited to consider a specific place along the river, but rather an almost 'platonic' ideal of the body of water as it navigates the landscape".

It's not the picture thats the main focus of the photo.

It,s the way the picture is set up with it's 5 horizontal lines framed from the middle of the picture downwards. Almost reflected by the sky above it.

A typical suburban scene set perpindicular to the city views normaly photographed.

It's a scene of peace and ease with no complications to distract you from what the picture actually is. It's not a photograph it's only a Picture.

Though I have to say Mikeys are far better on the eye

Is this a good start up dslr to get?

http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/eos-1100d-digital-slr-camera-with-18-55mm-f-3-5-5-6-lens-75-300-mm-f4-5-6-iii-lens-free-canon-100eg-deluxe-gadget-bag-11885901-pdt.html

I have around that amount to spend and it seems like pretty good value for money. Would just like to know if the camera is any good. 12Mp seems lower than most of the others

Thanks

That and the Nikon d3100.

Don't be fooled by pixels... it's quality, not quantity!

For example I had a very good point and shoot Panasonic TZ7 which had 10.1 Megapixels, it got broken by my my daughter, and got a TZ10 with 12.1 Megapixels.

The TZ7 had much better resolution as they both used the same sensor, therefore they basically just added noise...

I miss my old camera... :(

If I can be bothered I'll post a comparison image...

Here you go, all a similar picture, sunny & zoomed. BTW these are 100% cropped images to show the true difference of sensor quality over pixel number!

TZ7 - 10.1 Mpixels

TZ10 - 12.1 Mpixels

My 'new' Panasonic G1 with the same 12.1 Mpixels (better sensor):

Thanks phube. The reviews for the Canon mention the good resolution so i will more than likely go for that. I really cant wait to get out and start my new hobby.

On the Journalist course today we did photography. It was held at the photo gallery. I sold my enlarger to John Coster. I have not used it for years so the money was useful. Rather someone had it that is going to make use of it than being ripped off if I sold it elsewhere.

In the coming months there are going to be photography walks organised then we;ll go back to the gallery where the results can be uploaded to photo sites.

Learn any useful hints or tips?

This is my first post on this thread, loving some great photos on here. Thought I'd add some of mine from my various travels... These are mostly from Africa (about a couple of years ago I quit my job, flew to Botswana, bought a car and explored)

I definitely need to get back on the road with my camera.

Lovely photos makes me want to get back there.

Has anybody got any opinions on Serif PhotoPlus x4 (2010 edition) which is currently available on Serif's website for £9.99?

I'm looking for some image-editing software and this seems like a bargain.

I've only just started out with digital photography so I don't want to shell out for anything too expensive.

Thanks.

Not the greatest of quality being that i took this using my very old little digital camera. Myles Kennedy of Alter Bridge. Went to see them last night in Birmingham.
