Win £700 prize in 'Heart of Leicester' photo competition

Photographs capturing the "heart of Leicester" are wanted for a competition.

The Mercury, Highcross shopping centre and the University of Leicester have joined forces for the contest, which will raise awareness of the fund-raising campaign for the Cardiovascular Research Centre.

Photographs capturing the "heart of Leicester" are wanted for a competition.

The £12.6 million centre is being built at Glenfield Hospital, and is due to open in July.

It will transform research into cardiovascular disease, the UK's biggest killer.

While the heart centre is on the Glenfield Hospital site, it is being built by the university, which has committed more than £6 million to the development.

A public appeal for the £1 million still needed was launched last year.

About £400,000 has been raised so far.

Highcross has donated £2,000 and is housing the sculpture Stranded Heart, symbolising the work to build the centre, until it moves to the completed building.

Shopping centre general manager Jo Tallack said: "We're looking for what our shoppers and the wider Leicester community considers to be the heart of Leicester, whether it's Highcross itself, Leicester Market or even the Space Centre.

"We would love to see pictures from around the city."

Ave Vinick, the university's deputy director of development, said: "We are delighted by the tremendous support that people, groups and organisations have shown towards the appeal.

"The Cardiovascular Research Centre will enable more people with a susceptibility to, or suffering from, cardiovascular disease to benefit from greater understanding, prediction, treatment and care."

The top prize is a Canon 600D package worth more than £700, from John Lewis.

Send entries by Wednesday, February 29 – with your name and phone number – to:

To donate to the appeal, call 0116 223 1071, text LIFE41 with your donation amount to 70070 or e-mail:

Use Imageshack, YFrog, Flickr, Picasa or any other tool to upload your pics publicly and grab the 'share' URL or (if using Chrome - other browsers will be similar) right-click and select 'Copy Image URL' from that site to get the link you can then use to add your pics here.

I'm looking into perhaps maybe getting hold of a teleconverter for my D5000 and 75-300mm Tamron lens. Has anyone got any experience using teleconverters they would be willing to share? Thanks.

NB. I've just (sort of) moved back (part time) into my folks and my camera gear is still in Lancaster, so no pics recently, unfortunately.

Very impressive photos.

What camera kit do you use MikeyT to pull off pictures like these?

I use a Canon EOS 550D camera with the standard lens, plus a Canon telephoto lens of 55-250mm mate. :)

The shots of the Geese landing on the iced over lake was taken with the full zoom on and i was a fair way away. Cost me £167. In terms of zoom lenses, It's pocket change really. lol

I do indeed. :)

Impressive quality with the Canon. I'm looking at one of these but the lure of the micro 4/3rds system may pull me the other way. I'm still undecided.

Some of the images I've seen posted from a G3 for example on the micro 4/3rds forum have been quite incredible considering (a) its price and (b) its size - even with the kit lens.

I have £160 to spend from Christmas and I want to buy something to do with photography (it's MikeyT's fault - he's inspired me).

I have a Canon EOS 300D (with 8GB CF card), tripod, spare battery, stock Canon lens, Tamron zoom lens and auto shutter release.

What to get next?

I need some editing software and am into playing about with HDR - any recommendations as there's so many to choose from?

Also maybe I need some filters but again, which ones?

Any advice gratefully received.

4/3rds is bigger than full size!! By a 1/3rd

lol

"The image sensor of Four Thirds and MFT is commonly referred to as a 4/3" type or 4/3 type sensor (inch-based sizing system is derived from now obsolete video camera tubes). The sensor measures 18 mm × 13.5 mm (22.5 mm diagonal), with an imaging area of 17.3 mm × 13.0 mm (21.6 mm diagonal), comparable to the frame size of 110 film.[3] Its area, ca. 220 mm², is approximately 40% less than the APS-C sensors used in other manufacturers' DSLRs, yet is around 9 times larger than the 1/2.5" sensors typically used in compact digital cameras.

The Four Thirds system used a 4:3 image aspect ratio, in common with other compact digital cameras but unlike APS-C or full-frame DSLRs which usually adhere to the 3:2 aspect ratio of the traditional 35 mm format. Thus "The Four Thirds refers to both the size of the imager and the aspect ratio of the sensor"."

The size of a Panasonic GF3 (smallest CSC on the market) compared to a 600D...

Now tell me it's 1/3rd bigger!

The GF3 doesn't have the same sensor as the G3, neither does it have the EVF or flip out screen. I've done my research! The G3 is bigger, but not by too much.

Go into Curry's and take a look! ;)
