Goal Music & The PHG

From the files of done to death....

There has been thread after thread on the subject of the Music at Leicester City. As we all know traditionally Leicester City come out to “The Post Horn Gallop” and after we scored, there was just the sound of the fellow fans enjoyment to cheer you. This was how it was at Filbert Street.

In the last few seasons the club have “modernised” The Post Horn Gallop apparently to capture the younger fans interest with a techno style Post Horn Gallop. As a fan of dance music, in my opinion the Post Horn Gallop is not a tune which should be adapted with in this style as quite frankly it does not sound very good. More recently the club have introduced the “Chelsea Dagger” after home goals have been scored which was received well for the first few times it was played.

However this generic and foreign to Leicestershire music is not what most of the fans which to have played at the ground (see Lisa’s poll) if anything at all! This song is played at other grounds and is universally disliked by other clubs fans that I have spoken with because of the after home goal celebrations being Americanised.

In reality the music is seen as a controlling influence for the club, to control the home fans at a time when they have feelings running high. The club and others believe that when the music stops that the typical fan will take their seat and order will be regained, which is what the club and others are after.

It seems that a majority (see Lisa’s poll) of fans wish that the club would reverse its stance on music at the match in favour of a return to the traditional way as it was at Filbert Street. In recent weeks Leicester Fans are being mocked in their own stadia by opposing fans because of the music that is played after goals.

“Lisa’s poll is just a microcosm of the Fans opinion but the results are quite clear.

It seems such a pointless topic, but feelings do run high about the Music and the way football is moving away from traditions to a more commercialised (Americanised) presentation of a football match. It seems a long way off, but will there be advertisements at half time, or when any break that occurs within the game? As I say it seems a way off but the club and football in general have gone this far where will it all end?

So there in short is the problem. What can us as fans (customers) do about it?

We have held polls & various discussions on Foxes Talk. The club have been notified at the fans consultative committees. Peter Jones must have had hundreds if not thousands of e-mails from Leicester City fans on this very subject.

Unfortunately the club have held their stance on this matter as; in their opinion the majority fans “appear” to enjoy the music. The thing is with this answer is in my opinion the fans also “appear” to enjoy Leicester scoring a goal which coincides with the music.

I am not suggesting that I have the answer; however I have some suggestions in positive ways to tackle the club on these issues.

1. Obtain the support of the majority of Leicester City fans who attend games and have an opinion on this issue. I believe that we would need to conduct a petition, where around 10,000 signatures would be needed to make the club take a serious look at their music policy.

2. We could form a group of fans, who would vote on issues such as these and then banners etc, would be created and paraded at home games to show the feeling of the majority group. The majority would be calculated from a poll on a specific subject and the majority view would be then shown to the decision makers at the club. For instance, let’s say I am wrong on this issue and there the majority of fans wanted to keep the music, then we could either keep the status quo or express our opinions in an agreed way.

This is what I believe is needed. I believe that we could obtain these 10,000 signatures; there are in my opinion at least 10,000 Leicester City supporters out there who dislike the music or at least prefer the traditional music. The ideas would require help, I know there are people out there and on here who want change so now is the time do some something.

If anyone has any sensible suggestions please air them as there is 1 common goal here to get a better match day experience for all us fans here at our club!

Remember it is not my club or your club, but our club together, as if we did not financially and vocally support Leicester City they would be a nothing club, also I would like to remind us fans that when Leicester Fans have their backs against the wall, they act appropriately, remember the night against Tottenham & the O’Neill saga, the fans acted appropriately, and their feelings were known. That made a difference; we still could change things for the better of the majority of us fans.

On a personal note I would rather not cause a fuss about nothing, I am a typical English person in the way that I would rather put op and shut up on things that negatively effect my day to day life. We have to do something here before we lose what supporting Leicester City is about. For one I am fed up of seeing our traditions eroded for this "newer better footballing experience"?

You're going to have to stop the majority of fans who attend from celebrating when the music comes on. Look around you when a goal goes in, even most in L1 are doing it.

And from what Lisa says the majority on the Fans Forum prefer it.

Perhaps hi-jacking the forum and taking it over with anti music membership would be a way in.

Should we ever get rid of the goal music though I have fears, A majority of home supporters (i.e - Don't travel away) have forgot or don't know how to celebrate without the music, Just look for example when the goal music isn't played straight away after a goal people are just standing there doing nothing waiting for the music to start celebrating.

This is why as much as I and many people hate the music i'm thinking it might better just to leave it as it is.

Music and Celebrations = Embarrassing.

No Music and No Celebration = Unbelievably Embarrassing.

Take this forum to Cuba!

Utterly ridiculous!

People have forgotten how to celebrate? Well I am sure "if" they have they will remember or learn

A goal has just gone in what do you expect LCFC fans to do?

Just look next time we score a goal and the music isn't playing straight after the goal (i.e 15 second gap) people do nothing...They just stand there, The music is played they go mad for it.

That's because they are expecting/waiting it because they know it will start. If they know there isn't going to be any music then I'm sure they'll manage to conjure up something.

I remember the good old days at filbert street of 'Iwan' ringing out after the Ginger Welsh Wixzard had assaulted the entire oppostition team and scored. Those were the days.

Both excellent ideas, I'll help out in any way I can. Even if it's something as simple as setting up a facebook group on the matter to raise awareness of the petition.

I don't really care if it means everyone in the crowd looking like complete tossers for a while when a goal goes in because they do at the moment too. The current situation is a complete joke, we're being mocked by away fans when we score for fox sake! I honestly don't see how the scenario that you envisage would be worse, as something like that would sort itself out very quickly. I don't deny that there is potential for what you claim could happen to happen, but people/sheep/dancing monkeys will remember how to celebrate a goal properly again in time.

Again, as I say, I'll do anything I can to help this campaign.

By the way, does anybody know:

1) Who came up with the idea of playing the PHG remix after goals in the 05/06 (i think) season? This was the first time goal music had been played at a leicester match.

2) Who decided to change the goal music from the PHG remix to Chelsea Dagger?

3) Who presses the button/clicks on a computer screen to play the music when we score?

I just think any protest/action would be pointless unless we know these three things for certain - and I don't think most leicester fans actually know...me included, hence the questions!

I don't think getting 10,000 signatures for a petition is a realistic aim to be honest...I hate to piss on the bonfire, but i just can't see it happening. If anything is going to happen, it will be because a small group of fans claim the right to know what's best for the majority and then claim the right to act on their behalf...a bit like the Bolsheviks in the early 1920s. I think most people are prepared to sit on their hands about this. The only effective protest against football clubs is one that hits them in the pocket - like a boycott of half-time refreshment kiosks or something like that. If i remember rightly, i think something like that happened a couple of years ago when fulham decided to charge manyoo fans £40 or something for an FA cup match, and a small group of their fans got to the ground early and prevented everyone elst from buying things at half-time. I just think it's unlikely we'll see it happen tho...

I hate the music at home games, but agree that most people do enjoy it. If it absolutley has to stay why dont they play music from a leicester band eh? I reckon the opening part of the song empire by kasabian would be (not better than no music) better than the generalised universal chelsea dagger - CHELSEA dagger wtf has that got to do with our beloved Leicester?????

I don't mind whether the 'Post Horn Gallop' music is the old or new style and to be honest i don't mind 'Chelseas dagger' music either, as fans do seem to enjoy it. That said i don't dance to the music i just celebrate the same way i would at away games.

However i do agree that when the music isn't played straight away fans just stand there and don't seem to know how to celebrate the goal, it happened when Leicester scored the 2nd against Crewe and the music took afew seconds longer than normal to come on and many fans just stood there.

When the Crewe fans were dancing to the music i wasn't sure if they were taking the p*ss or whether they were just trying to enjoy themselves. I wouldn't mind either way if 'chelseas dagger' is played or not but i do think many fans enjoy celebrating a goal to 'chelsea dagger'.

You know exactly what I mean Tom.

The L1'ers are bouncing up and down to Chelsea Dagger along with the majority of others.

Excellent! Even better you live in the same town as me :giggle::thumbup:

Facebook it, that is fine anything to help! Also on-line petitioning will be great, it means that we don't physically have to speak to everyone who supports the idea.

If they wish to continue then don't get involved or sign the petition, they have their choice as does every LCFC fan.

Over the weeks, I've noticed that the top 5 or 6 rows don't bother with it. Not looked down lower.

Fair play to you doing this, and we can all moan about it but if no-one does anything about it moan will be all it is, and I salute you for that, but haven't we tried petitioning before? (A few weeks/months ago?)

-And yes I signed that one too.

What, you live in Colchester? :giggle:

Back in the good old MH in a couple of weeks. I'll get a facebook group started pronto!
