Koke Posted 25 December 2008 Posted 25 December 2008 Just a bit of thought before we clash with the minnows on Boxing Day. Opposition fans [Huddersfield & Wednesday fans in particular] keep telling me the reason we are flying high is because our squad is full of Championship players. If you actually look through our squad, you'll find that it is a false statement. What do Wednesday fans know about our squad anyway, I will never know. Oakley Tunchev Gilbert Mattock Hobbs And please don't argue with me about Fryatt. And if anybody mentions Howard, I'll send a suicide bomber to their house. So yeah, 5 Championship standard players. We don't know what Lloyd Dyer could do up there, and the jury is still out on Andy King whether he can hack it at a higher level.
Koke Posted 25 December 2008 Author Posted 25 December 2008 I just had a massive spliff, so excuse my foul language, gents.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 25 December 2008 Posted 25 December 2008 I reckon Powell could still cut it.
Koke Posted 25 December 2008 Author Posted 25 December 2008 Powell couldn't run 100 yards, Michael. The bloke is 39. He could be my father [just about].

Yeah but he's played at a consistently high level throughout his career. His experience would be a great asset. I'd also rate Berner as well.
Fox You Forest Posted 25 December 2008 Posted 25 December 2008 Are Howard and Fryatt being left out for last season? if so how does Oakley get in?
Koke Posted 25 December 2008 Author Posted 25 December 2008 Oakley spent most of career in the top flight, and has captained every club (all 3 of them) he has been at. Steve Howard had 1 [one] splendid season with the sheeps in the Championship You make the call....
Flynny Posted 25 December 2008 Posted 25 December 2008 Our entire first 11 would finish far higher than we did last season in the Championship this season. King'll be fine in the division above, possibly better.
Thracian Posted 25 December 2008 Posted 25 December 2008 Even if there wasn't a single change to our top 16 the current squad would do fine in The Championship. Even individuals who might struggle in different circumstances (Fryatt/Howard/Oakley come to mind) would perfom much better within a unit that compliments their abilities as has been demonstrated this season. Our major problem in the last campaign was having such unconstructive central defenders who, while winning the ball competently enough, gave it away far too easily thus inviting more pressure than was ever necessary. In a team that too often lacked creativity and pace anyway, there was little chance we could break down decent defences and score enough goals to be competitive. This was all perfectly clear for months so we effectively volunteered to be relegated. Now we have the constantly constructive Tunchev, reasonably supportive full-backs, goalscoring/creating midfielders, quickish wing options and strikers who are getting a reasonable supply of chances. Three or four good players as options and our current team would not only survive in the Championship but would be a force.

DB11 Posted 25 December 2008 Posted 25 December 2008 But we do have a squad full of Championship players. But to specifically add to the list, Hendo could cut it at Championship too
Father Ted Posted 25 December 2008 Posted 25 December 2008 Hendo, Gilbert, Tunchev, Hobbs, Mattock, Berner, Oakley, Davies, King, Dyer, Fryatt, Howard Basically our first team. People look at Fryatt and Howard and think that because they had a bad season last year they will be crap in the championship. Well, no, the problem with Fryatt has always been confidence, once he scores a couple he's fine. And as for Steve, , he could still do it.
wirralsimon Posted 25 December 2008 Posted 25 December 2008 I don't think our team is good enough to get promoted from the Championship, but the first team squad are pretty much all good enough to play for a side that holds it's own. Simon
Babylon Posted 25 December 2008 Posted 25 December 2008 MattockHobbs Our two most error prone defenders? Yet no Kisnorbo who was player of the year? I'd really like to know how Hobbs gets in for being average... oh yeah that's right, he comes from Liverpool so he MUST be good enough.

I personally think Hobbs is better than Kisnorbo. As Thracian eloquently put it, we had non-constructive central defenders and Kisnorbo was one of the main culprits. McAuley being the other. Hobbs is not by any means a player that would ever cut it at the top level, and he's not the best passer of the ball, but I would have him over Kisnorbo 9 times out of 10.
Tevez Posted 25 December 2008 Posted 25 December 2008 Hobbs is that shit he'll be playing Premiership football in a matter of years. Gooooooooooooooooooooooooood one.
Babylon Posted 25 December 2008 Posted 25 December 2008 Hobbs is that shit he'll be playing Premiership football in a matter of years.Gooooooooooooooooooooooooood one. Well he had better pull his finger out then as on current performances he'll be lucky to progress further than this league. Tunchev is carrying him at the moment. Watch any game and most of our problems are because of our own errors at the back... mostly by Hobbs.
clazkel Posted 25 December 2008 Posted 25 December 2008 I think our first team now are good enough for the championship if they keep their confidence and fitness. And that includes Fryatt and Howard. Last season the service they received was poor but if they got the service they will do well.

I also agree with you on this matter, if Hobbs had the passing ability of Morrison then he would be playing at the highest level NOW. Morrison's vision is of the highest class and some of the passes he picks out are fantastic. Hobbs is a very steady player, a leader with great tactical awareness (yes, that's right) as so often I see him looking across the line, shouting when to push up, etc. As a true central defender should. As for Kisnorbo, he was the most fouled player in the Championship last year and the year before that. That is only because he fouls the other player only to make it look as if he's been fouled. 9/10 this works but when it doesn't it costs us dearly, remember Sheff Utd last year?? BTW, I have tried this in matches and it's quite a useful trick But on the whole, I see Hobbs as a better player than good old servant Kisnorbo.
