Cos at the start of the film they were a standard family with a standard life and with a little effort they could have been happy with what they had. However he throws it all away, undergoes years of deprivation, which he also selfishly drags his son through, until finally he become fabulously wealthy. The film basically said that to be happy you need LOADS OF MONEY, which just isn't true.
