Finnegan Posted 27 March 2009 Posted 27 March 2009 Oh Stez I'm not saying it WAS the most offensive thing ever or even that bad at all, I'm just saying: 1. If it did cause offence that could have been one potential reason? I can't really think of any other... 2. It's not really the place of a young, white teenager to tell someone who feels on the receiving end of racism that it's "no big deal."
FilboFox Posted 27 March 2009 Posted 27 March 2009 There's a (believe it or not) South Park that makes this point quite nicely. It's not really for you to say "it's a bit racist, who gives a shit?" Pardon my (ironic) assumption but I'm guessing you're white? You've no idea what it feels like to be on the receiving end of comments like that and I think you should really keep to a minimum how dismissive you are. It's a really, really petty thing to go wound up about - I agree - but at the same time I'm not going to stand here and tell the Asian community that they're being overly sensitive if they found it offensive, it's not really my place to do so. Well I beg to differ... I have been on the end of jokey remarks about being British back in Belgium so I can kinda relate to the comment in some way. To say that because it was aimed at the Asian community it suddenly becomes a huge problem just highlights the fact that some Asians have become overly sensitive... people should simply not be getting worked up over such a tiny remark. Are Americans losing their rags when people goes around stereotyping them calling them stupid and fat? Do we see many Chinese getting worked up when people make what could be deemed to be racist remarks about them? What about other European countries we take the piss out of... France, Germany...? The simple fact of the matter is, and I'm not being racist in any way, I'm just pointing out the facts, is that some Asians, and I highlight SOME, have become overly sensitive about their race/religion and it is ridiculous... EDIT: As for me being dismissive of what is deemed a racist comment... well for heavens sake, it's such a tiny little comment, not even worth calling an insult really, that it is absurd to be getting worked up over. Again, I go back to the fun we poke at other countries around the world... would they be blowing it out of all proportion like this? I think not...
Fox You Forest Posted 27 March 2009 Posted 27 March 2009 so what is the point in getting worked up over it? Hmm...
Finnegan Posted 27 March 2009 Posted 27 March 2009 I can give you first hand experience on what it's like to be racially abused and to live in a white-minority area. I've had fireworks shot at me "for being white" and I've been targetted for mugging "for being white." That doesn't mean I'm going to, for example, tell a black person that I know what it feels like to be called the N bomb. What I'm saying is, you should never really belittle someone else's claims of feeling targetted or offended by racists comments unless you've really the experience of being in their shoes. There's nothing wrong with empathizing or exchanging similar anecdotes - just don't presume to know what they feel like. Especially given that, if we're really fucking honest here, white people have had it damn good for the last 329582937523 years and even the worst abuse we've received just doesn't compare in the slightest to the genocidal and inhumane horrors we've inflicted.
Edmund Posted 27 March 2009 Posted 27 March 2009 I've had fireworks shot at me "for being white" Which ghetto did this happen in? Were they rockets or sparklers?
Guest Posted 27 March 2009 Posted 27 March 2009 Wood Green, Haringey (Norf London.) My neck of the woods too (well just down the road, on the ladder)
Finnegan Posted 27 March 2009 Posted 27 March 2009 My neck of the woods too (well just down the road, on the ladder) Where you at?
Guest Posted 27 March 2009 Posted 27 March 2009 Where you at? Currently on Cavendish Rd just off Green Lanes but am in the process of looking at new flats, probably stay round that area though I reckon. Within wandering distance of The Salisbury pub

Fair enough.
Finnegan Posted 27 March 2009 Posted 27 March 2009 Harringay? Bit nice round there? You're up by Muswell and Crouch End so it can't be too bad? I worked in Crouch End for about eighteen months but I've never actually been to Harringay. Never really left my own little bubble, to be honest. Cockfosters and Oakwood (for uni), Southgate, Palmers Green and Wood Green (for the cheap pubs), Bounds Green (where I lived) and Turnpike Lane / Crouch End (where I worked) was about my whole world. And, of course, Zone 1.

Was contemplating moving to Crouch End but quite like the ease of access to work from this bit of town. I'd recommend the The Salisbury if you're ever in this part and like imported beer, usually have a fairly wide selection on Anyway, back on topic..... David Jason the racist eh? Who'd have thunk it?
ozleicester Posted 27 March 2009 Posted 27 March 2009 The number one selling record in Australia in 1990 (i think) You decide...racist?..funny?
BoneDog Posted 27 March 2009 Posted 27 March 2009 Go on then all you bleeding-hearts from the Jade thread...knock yourself out over more hideous humour causing offence and suffering: This joke is not on the same level as takin the piss out of someone who just died so I don't know what the Jade thing has got to do with oat
BoneDog Posted 27 March 2009 Posted 27 March 2009 I don't actually think anyone was offended, were they? Honestly? No Pakistani I know was offended by the joke (I've asked a few). The only person who complained was some woman from a PC organization I think.
BoneDog Posted 27 March 2009 Posted 27 March 2009 i thought it was widely known it wasn't a racist joke (a shit one maybe) now i am confused! It doesn't sound like a racist joke to me. Some racists might say it, but the joke itself isn't racist

You'll find that it was probably the white middle class that would complian. I personally didn't find the joke racist, maybe abit shit and ignorant, as mahatma is a hindu\indian term and not pakistani!
