Ross Turnbull

Leicester are closing in on signing Middlesbrough keeper Ross Turnbull on a free transfer.

League One champions City have made a new shot-stopper a priority for life back in the Championship.

And Turnbull, 24, is out of contract at the Riverside after turning down a new deal.

Turnbull enjoyed a superb start to the Premier League season but has been on the bench for most of 2009 since losing his place to Brad Jones.

The 6ft 4in English keeper is now poised to quit the North East for regular first team football.

And Foxes chairman Milan Mandaric is willing to make him one of the best-paid players at the Walkers Stadium on around £10,000-aweek.

City boss Nigel Pearson (above) is planning several other signings, but is keen to offload striker DJ Campbell, who is on loan at Blackpool.

His shot / save ratio was actually among the best in the Premier League when he played at the beginning of the season.

Decent enough on a free.

Yes, didn't particularly excel but definitely performed admirably behind one of the division's weakest and most inexperienced defences. I'd be happy enough if we signed him.

I would be very happy with this if it was true if we can get him and his agent to talk I imagine Pearson is a man who it's pretty hard to tell him no!!

Think there'd be a fair bit of competition for this guy being on a free and all. He's had a tough season but as many have said at one of the poorest clubs, even in that time though he's shown signs of quality and in my opinion would be a great signing.

I've not really seen enough of him to have a good opinion about whether he's a good signing or not, but I'd trust Pearson's judgement.

If this is true then surely it means one of Warner or Stockdale won't be coming, I'd rather it'd Warner that we can't get but my guess would be Stockdale.

I would say if we could get Turnbull then neither of them will be coming all 3 of those keepers are surely going to want first team games. So it would have be Turnbull + a bench warmer

Capello went and had a look at him earlier in season , think id take him

If this is going to happen, I'd seriously be really, really pleased. Turnbull's been playing great all season for one of the worst teams in the Premiership. Chelsea thrashed Middlesbrough 5-0 earlier on, but apart from that one game, he's performed on a constant level and was only dropped to the bench because of Jones' recovery.

But with all these goalkeeper names in circulation, it makes you wonder who's going to take the bench place?

Turnbull is quality!!! Get him in!!! Notice how Middlesborough got even worse when they dropped him!!

Well Brad Jones is comfortably the worst Premiership Keeper I have ever seen, the fact he is keeping Turnbull out the side must be worrying for the lad. Still I have seen him do good things and bad things, which is true of any young keeper, I trust our scouts have a much more rounded view of his ability.

I will tell you one thing though, we won't be offering 10k a week contracts about!

Good to see Pearson looking for English talent first.

And January usually produces a fair amount of talented goalkeepers. *coughs* Banks *coughs*

Like someone said on this thread, he was dropped as Brad Jones came back from injury. Did you see the boy perform week in week out before he was dropped? He only seemed to make one or two clangers, which every keeper does, he was commanding in the area, really good shotstopper and f*cxing huge!! Leicester are showing signs they mean serious business if they sign this lad!!
