Old Firm

Still want Rangers to win it. But Lafferty should get hit with a 5 game ban.

My views on the old firm?

Who cares?

Mine too.

Both sets of fans have more than their fair share of idiotic bigoted morons. Celtic have their positively charming pro IRA chants and Rangers have the equally repellent song about the Irish Famine. It seems incredible that there is such backward thinking and sectarianism in 21st century British football. For me, the best day in Scottish football will be when somebody breaks the Glaswegian duopoly on the SPL.

Any of you guys think Rangers and Celtic will ever join the English leagues?

Personally, I say they can piss off!

Me too.

They would not be good enough to challenge for anything other than UEFA Cup qualification and would add very little to the league. The fans would cause havoc on a weekly basis, as we saw when Rangers made the trip to Manchester for last season's UEFA Cup final. Add the Anglophobia of the Celtic fans in particular into the equation and you have a deeply unpleasant mix. If you think Leeds fans are unpleasant, just imagine the trouble these fans would bring to English towns and cities.

Well, what would happen to the other Scottish teams? Would they filter into The Championship and League 1 etc.?

'Cause without the big two, the whole Scottish league would be pointless!

Saw that on Setanta this morning and was appalled by it! Really annoys when players do this - just be a man!

Exactly, the sheer amount of anti-English hatred Celtic possess towards us has to be seen to be believed, though i would like to see their bubble burst if they do come down here "we'd mop up the EPL in 5 years, your scared of us" bollocks, its embarrassingly laughable! and as for their supposed "global support" im sorry but ive never heard anybody outside of the UK....well actually make that Scotland......actually make that Glasgow, call them two of the biggest clubs in the world...or even mention them in fact! IMO Celtic are no bigger than any of the big Turkish or Greek clubs, what makes them think they can compete with the likes of Man Utd, Liverpool, Barca, Real Madrid, AC & Inter Milan etc etc etc and Rangers are no bigger than Newcastle United.....

This is coming from someone with an Irish upbringing BTW, i should really have been brought up to support Celtic but most of the Anglo-Irish community couldn't give a fook about them anymore!

It's because each gets 60,000. But that is largely due to them being in a big city. If they were in The Premier League, they wouldn't finish higher than 8th. Let them disappear up their own arses, 'cause no one in England gives a shit! ;)

Celtic have a massive fanbase among the global Irish community.

That's why they regularly fill stadia whenever they tour the US, and why they've been invited on a pre-season tour of Australia.

As for "anti-English hatred" I've been to Celtic Park and had no problems with the fans at all. They welcome supporters from ALL faiths and backgrounds, something that can't be said of their main rivals.

The referee has announced his immediate retirement.

But the damage has already been done. The only way it could be repaired is if the SPL replayed the game, which they're not allowed to do under FIFA rules.

Or put in a less sensational manner - he's retiring a week earlier than first intended.

Lafferty should be banned, there is no need for play-acting. The only saving grace is that Rangers were down to 10 as well when they took the lead.

Personally, I like neither Celtic nor Rangers...

I wish the bigoted bastids (on both sides) would piss off and form a league of 2.

Moreover they should never be allowed near the PL. If we do have to have two foreign clubs let's get Real Madrid and Barcelona in. :D;)

Without being bothered to read much of the thread, anyone who thinks Celtic and Rangers wouldn't be a force in English football given four or five years is a fucking idiot.

At the end of the day a football club is two things, it's stadium and it's fanbase - massive on both accounts. All of this "Celtic and Rangers have crap squads they'd be bottom half Premiership teams at best!" stuff is the most naive rubbish I've ever heard.

As is the belief that Celtic aren't one of the most globally sellable football clubs ever. Yes, they might exaggerate their fanbase as compared to Manchester United at the moment but that's because Man Utd are currently playing in the world famous "EPL" and nobody gives a fook about Scotish football.

Whichever side of the Old Firm you prefer there is no denying that Celtic has the edge over Rangers and any English club when it comes to global marketing / attracting fans and money. Why? Easy:

The whole fucking world loves the Irish.

The Irish aren't even loved by the whole of Scotland.

Celtic and Rangers are roughly the same size as Newcastle and nobody thinks they're going to win the league. Personally I'm against it, it would just be 2 more bigger teams keeping us out of the premier league.

Then you have made the first decent argument for their inclusion.

I'm sorry, I won't demean myself by discussing things with posters with such low post counts.

Leeds boast a far bigger fanbase than either Portsmouth or Wigan, yet it is the latter clubs who are in the Premiership and not Leeds. A big stadium and fanbase help a club on its way to success, but aren't the be all and end all. Newcastle boast a 52,000 seater stadium with a loyal fanbase to fill it, sell out away allocations every week yet have won nothing for over 30 years and teeter on the brink of relegation. Unlike Leeds, they haven't experienced a catastrophic financial collapse, they just haven't been anything like good enough since the late 1990s. A huge fanbase can't hurt, but it is far from a guarantee of success.

As is the belief that Celtic aren't one of the most globally sellable football clubs ever. Yes, they might exaggerate their fanbase as compared to Manchester United at the moment but that's because Man Utd are currently playing in the world famous "EPL" and nobody gives a fook about Scotish football.

Clubs are generally far more marketable when they are successful. The SPL is a crap league and the world knows it, but Celtic have won it for fun in pretty much every era since its inception. Glory-hunting is a powerful tool and everyone knows that fans jump on the bandwagon of a successful team, hence the plastic Mancs and Scousers from everywhere from Bootle to Bangkok, and Salford to Saudi Arabia. If however the Old Firm were regularly sandwiched between the likes of West Ham and Stoke, this global support would begin to dry up.

Whichever side of the Old Firm you prefer there is no denying that Celtic has the edge over Rangers and any English club when it comes to global marketing / attracting fans and money. Why? Easy:

I agree that affection for the Irish people in general would help with their marketability, and give them the edge over Rangers and most English clubs, but more marketable than any English club? More marketable than a Manchester United side that has won three European Cups and currently has some of the world's most widely recognised players on its books? More marketable than a Liverpool side that has been at the forefront of English and European football since the 1970s? The fact that Celtic are able to play in the Champions League is because of the weak league they play in, if they were in the English Premiership, they would be rubbing shoulders with the likes of Metalist Kharkiv and Standard Liege in the UEFA Cup at best, because they would not topple the top four or even top five.

Well in that case, like somebody earlier posted, if its size we're after, why not go for the biggest? Real Madrid & Barcelona? Ac Milan & Juventus? Paris St Germain & Marseille? i could go on, either way there are many clubs that dwarf Celtic & Rangers without the need to market themselves to a certain community or political ideology....they are just football clubs unlike the firm

For this main reason Celtic & Rangers will never play down here!

Other reasons IMO include

1) They offer nothing that will benefit the English game in terms of quality or money as:

2) Sky already pays the Premier League in billions

3) Minimal added attraction with English punters, only their fans show any enthusiasm for it because:

4) All they want is our money (speak to any of their fans)

5) Fan costs at traveling to all away grounds will soar in a single season

6) The police would have a major say against it

7) The premier league is already the strongest league in the world, if its not broken......

I'm sure theres more but i'm already bored with it, i just wish this, Gartside, & the 39th game debate would just leave our game alone!
