Guest Posted 11 May 2009 Posted 11 May 2009 Am I the only person who likes one of the Old Firm for a non-sectarian reason? No, I like one of the Old Firm for a several non-sectarian reasons. The sectarian stuff really makes me cringe.
Finnegan Posted 11 May 2009 Posted 11 May 2009 Most of my appreciation for non-English clubs is based on politics. I like Celtic and dislike Rangers because of politics. That said I think the sectarianism on either side is an embarassment to the UK. Celtic are simply the closest you're getting to a lefty football club up their way and that sits right with me. They're no Rayo Vallecano, mind. \o/
Koke Posted 11 May 2009 Posted 11 May 2009 I know Celtic is the closest you will get to a lefty football, but I've always preferred Rangers - a bit strange maybe. My favourism for Rangers comes from the old days of Brian Laudrup, so I've always leaned towards Rangers and wanted them to win. Maybe I'm too much of a football fanatic to give a toss about the politics behind it.
Finnegan Posted 11 May 2009 Posted 11 May 2009 Hahaha, I liked Rangers as a kid for pretty much the same reasons as Leese I think. They played in blue and they had Ally McCoist. Then I got a bit older and green was my favourite colour so I prefered Celtic, brilliant stuff.
Babylon Posted 11 May 2009 Posted 11 May 2009 Come on Rangers... win the league and I win £500 for predicting the winners of each league.... BOOOOOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Guest Posted 11 May 2009 Posted 11 May 2009 Hahaha, I liked Rangers as a kid for pretty much the same reasons as Leese I think. They played in blue and they had Ally McCoist. There are other reasons too.
purpleronnie Posted 11 May 2009 Posted 11 May 2009 And so what if Celtic were formed as a means of raising money for a charity that helped the poor Irish immigrants in Glasgow's East End? Is there something wrong with that? Celtic fans have every right to be proud of their club's heritage just like fans of any other club. Like I said, he's uneducated.
Webbo Posted 11 May 2009 Posted 11 May 2009 I want Rangers to win the league because Celtic have won it for years. If it was the other way round I'd want Celtic to win it. I think most English people don't understand/care about the sectarianism.
Alexikokopops Posted 11 May 2009 Posted 11 May 2009 They're no Rayo Vallecano, mind. \o/ Mentalist yoyo club. Love it.

That said I think the sectarianism on either side is an embarassment to the UK. Celtic are simply the closest you're getting to a lefty football club up their way and that sits right with me. That's sort of how I feel, but I wouldn't call myself a Celtic fan--I just happen to prefer them over Rangers in the Old Firm. I'm very liberal but no revolutionary. That said, despite going a little overboard on the IRA issue sometimes, it's nice to see a British club whose hardcore don't just automatically fall back to right-wing crap. And you're right about the sectarianism--there's so much bullshit posturing on both sides that it's disgusting. I feel like there are some idiots that follow Rangers that act like such zealous Unionists as a pretentious overcompensation for the Celtic/Irish link. But obviously, with the Northeastern U.S. being home to many of Irish decent, from recent immigrants to families whose ancestors came over generations ago, it's just the nature of what we see and hear that most of us around here that know a little about the conflicts in Ireland will be a little more sympathetic to the Irish cause. And as Celtic have a much larger presence in the soccer world here than Rangers, anybody that follows soccer and knows anything about the Old Firm will be more likely to want Celtic to top Rangers because that person will most likely have at least one friend that follows the Bhoys--even if it is **** annoying having to listen to the Wolfe Tones every time Celtic win a goddamn game! You'll never see anybody wearing Rangers shirts around here, and when the 'Gers came over a few years ago to play at Giants Stadium, there were maybe a dozen or two of their fans. Whenever the Celts play in the U.S., there are a dozen or two thousand of their fans at the game. It really is quite one-sided. Rangers have two Yanks--Maurice Edu and DaMarcus Beasley--and I want those guys to do well. But when Claudio Reyna was there, players and club staff made it a point to tell him not to cross himself on the field. That's got to create an unpleasant atmosphere at the club. The biggest shame about all of this? If none of the above were true, perhaps a strange combination of events could have madeRangers my favorite team in all of Europe, considering that my favorite of all my favorite professional sports teams famously wears these sweaters: ! They're no Rayo Vallecano, mind. \o/ Now that is truly a one-of-a-kind club... run by a mother of 13! And Kasey Kelley left Leicester to go play for them I think they deserve their own thread.
Finnegan Posted 11 May 2009 Posted 11 May 2009 Let's not forget that Mark Draper played all of about ten games for Rayo Vallecano, too. I think this calls for a tribute thread, to be honest.

They're no Rayo Vallecano, mind. \o/ Very true. I have no interest in the sectarian side of the game, although it's a big part of the history between these clubs, I think it's stupid. When growing up, when I used to go to the pub with my dad, one of his best mates was a massive Rangers fan and that's why I prefer Rangers more so than Celtic. I remember him telling me how he stopped going Rangers games for a few years whilst Mo Johnston was playing for Rangers. (Used to play for Celtic too)
ASH17LCFC Posted 13 May 2009 Posted 13 May 2009 Hibees! Yeah lets laugh at Rangers Lets all bang how far Rhyl will go in the champions league
ASH17LCFC Posted 13 May 2009 Posted 13 May 2009 About as far as Rangers managed this season.. I knew MR Political correctness would reply, your reasons for hating Rangers are pathetic. No Surrender !
Fosse Boy Posted 13 May 2009 Posted 13 May 2009 I knew MR Political correctness would reply, your reasons for hating Rangers are pathetic. No Surrender ! As are your reasons for supporting them. A point made even more apparent by that last bit of your post...
ASH17LCFC Posted 13 May 2009 Posted 13 May 2009 As are your reasons for supporting them. A point made even more apparent by that last bit of your post... What because i'm proud to be British People who aren't proud to be British, should fook off.
Fosse Boy Posted 13 May 2009 Posted 13 May 2009 What because i'm proud to be British People who aren't proud to be British, should fook off. Being proud to be British doesn't necessarily have to equate to xenophobia y'know. You can be proud of who you are and respect other people's cultures too.

Seriously people can't be proud to be British because you got pc idiots like you claiming its racist and not nice for the people who aren't british ...

Seriously people can't be proud to be British because you got pc idiots like you claiming its racist and not nice for the people who aren't british ... He's not being overly PC, AFIE is just stating that it's possible to be proud to be british if you are british, but why would you be proud to be british if you're not? Surely everyone has a right to be proud of their heritage/nationality/whatever
Fosse Boy Posted 13 May 2009 Posted 13 May 2009 But yet we live were again ? Seriously people can't be proud to be British because you got pc idiots like you claiming its racist and not nice for the people who aren't british ... I'm not saying that at all. I'm saying that it's idiots like you, who equate patriotism to xenophobia, that stop the rest of us who want to be patriotic from doing so because we don't want to be guilty by association. Right wing idiots inevitably hijack any attempt at well meaning, flag waving national pride and it's these sort of prats who refuse to disassociate patriotism from the ideal of ethnic nationalism who leave the rest of us facepalming continuously and feeling ashamed of our nationality.
