Cropwellfox Posted 25 May 2009 Posted 25 May 2009 Fantastic! We avoid a 0-1 home defeat to Burnley and a horrible February tuesday night up there (par for the course). Burnley have shown they are worthy opponents against a few prem sides this year and deserve their celebrations. The beauty about football is that wherever your team is, it's there on merit. Great to see new sets of fans enjoying the premiership.
Matt Posted 25 May 2009 Posted 25 May 2009 Blackwell so wants to let rip doesn't he. It really is the best way to go up, worst way not to go up.
Darkzzz_ Posted 25 May 2009 Posted 25 May 2009 It really is the best way to go up, worst way not to go up. Two total contrasts of emotion isn't it. I would hate to be a Sheffield United fan right now. Blackwell the next manager to walk?
Samilktray Posted 25 May 2009 Posted 25 May 2009 Dont know how Burnley are gonna stay up next year what so ever. Well done to them though.

Fosse Boy Posted 25 May 2009 Posted 25 May 2009 Bollocks! i'd have loved to have seen Sheffield United Vs West Ham next year!On another note and its probably just me that thinks this but Burnley, Bolton, Blackburn & Wigan in the Premier League next year....horrible! The geogrpahical distribution of top flight clubs is somewhat uneven, but oh well. Be nice to get rid of Wigan and Bolton though, totally undeserving of top flight football in my opinion.
Samilktray Posted 25 May 2009 Posted 25 May 2009 Be nice to get rid of Wigan and Bolton though, totally undeserving of top flight football in my opinion. They won promotion, and have succesfully earned there right to play Premiership football, so how are they undeserving? I dont like Bolton at all, but I just found that statement a little bit strange.

I didn't mean that they're undeserving because of their football. Obviously your league position determines your worthiness to play in the top flight. I just think that their fans take their top flight status for granted. There are fans even in the third tier (Leeds, Huddersfield etc.) who are more deserving of seeing higher quality football based on their average attendance relative to their league positions. In an ideal world for me, the best fans would get to see the best football, but that's obviously not how it works in real life. Guess I phrased my point wrong.

Surely those fans that they do attract are just as worthy as Leeds fans for example - just because Leeds can attract from a bigger, more populated catchment area doesn't make them more deserving. Do you feel Leeds are more deserving than us?
davieG Posted 25 May 2009 Author Posted 25 May 2009 So Burnley have beaten Sheff U 3 times this season. Mind you A Fox in Essex will probably think Sheff U are more deserving because they have bigger attendances

I agree, I was watching the end of the Newcastle game yesterday when the commentator said that the Geordie fans deserve better, as if they haven't got their share of part timers, fair weather fans and people without a clue. Imo fans of teams like Carlisle deserve the most respect, travelling miles every other week to see 3rd tier football with virtually no hope of making the big time.

In theory, yes because of the level of support they continue to get in spite of their cpntinual failure to get themselves out of this division. However, it's all about what happens on the pitch and obviously that's the way football should work. I just think certain sets of fans are hard done by when it comes to the level of football they get to watch week in, week out. I'm not advocating that only the teams with the most passionate and numerous fans should be allowed to watch top flight football or anything like that, the point I was trying to make was that certain clubs' fans take the football that they get to watch every week for granted. Obviously I haven't made my argument very well at all though.

That's a bit presumptuous - every club has fans like that big and small, why pick on the smaller ones, do you not think these 'certain clubs' have passionate fans?
AmericanScott Posted 25 May 2009 Posted 25 May 2009 Well done Burnley. Coyle has changed their game since he's been in charge. Excellent manager. Weren't we linked with him before he took the Burnley job? Can't remember. I's all good now for Burnley, but i can't see them staying up sadly.
C-man Posted 25 May 2009 Posted 25 May 2009 YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!
AjcW Posted 25 May 2009 Posted 25 May 2009 Smells a bit like west brom this doesnt it, sexy football that works in the championship but gets shit all over in the premiership. Although the way they have performed in the cup against prem teams may be evidence to suggest otherwise.
Tommeh Posted 25 May 2009 Posted 25 May 2009 Didnt mind who won big soft spot for both and 2 great grounds so it was irrelevant....Please for Coyle and Burnley but watch them magically counjure up 12,000 new fans overnight.

Although the way they have performed in the cup against prem teams may be evidence to suggest otherwise. Seen a few people say this, Please don't read too much into it, Fair play to Burnley over this whole season, they have done well in the cups against Premiership teams, and congratulations today but bear in mind WE performed well in the cup against Premiership teams last season (Chelsea, Villa), We did it this season (Fulham), We did it over the past 4 seasons (Fulham, Blackburn, Tottenham), and we've been shit (Barr this season), in numerous relegation battles resulting relegation last season. Taking nothing away from Burnley and good luck to them in the Premership, but after reading a few people noting that they should do well or atleast fight due to good performances in cups, it doesn't really give a good account - You can pull out good performance every now and again in a cup game the problem is doing it week in week out and trying compete.

I suppose it is a little presumptuous of me to think that why, but I guess I'm trying to look at it proportionally. Anyway, I know when I'm beaten so I'll shut up now. I'll save my views for one of those "Who would make up your ideal Premier League" threads that pops up every so often.

The difference is though, Burnley have a lot of players who are good on the ball. In the games that we've competed with Premiership teams, we've outfought them, not outclassed them. I think Burnley will stay up for at least a season.
