Fox92 Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 It was just the comment that said we need a finisher and then it followed up saying dickov hussles and gets in their face. I meant that there is still no point in having a hussler if they cant finish....re Gallagher: I don't think I made myself very clear on this bit either, but by further up the pitch, i mean more up front and more central. I think Gallagher could be an extremely good threat in this league especially linking the forward to attack via Wellens/Oakley. I would love to see that pair pulling the strings with two wider 'free' wingers and then Howard in the middle. Maybe Villa can loan us Heskey to hold it up? I get the feeling our best players are all in midfield at the moment and would like to see us using them. Especially away from home/on wider pitches, lets see a 4-5-1. Wellens and Oakley with Gallagher playing the 'free' role if thats what you want to call it. We're hardly Chelsea i know but i would still like to see it tried one day. Yes I think Gallagher should be played behind because he is that type of player. As you mentioned the midfield being the best area, I can't disagree with this because it is most probably the strongest since Adams' was here, but I personally think the defence is the strongest area and it is most probably becuase Nigel Pearson, Craig Sheakespeare and even if you count Chris Powell all played in defence in their playing days which my dad kindly pointed out to me. It was also my dad who told me about the Dickov hussling thing, but I thought I'd put it on here , but yes we do need a finisher to go with it and the idea of the past; Kevin Phillips, doesn't seem bad now
Sods Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 Just got back, could easily have got something out of the game. Great night out in my muzzy shirt, 80p drinks, hello! Bit dissapointed with our support, i was stood on row d which might have been the problem but thought our support rarely got going. Unlike the toon army which i thought was superb! Anyway there going up, we matched them for large parts but missed the clinical finish.
davieG Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 All this talk of Gallagher playing behind the front two is a contradiction if you want to improve the attacks down the flanks. You can't have both.
Ozwin Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 We were right at the front and found it hard to get anything going really, sounded like the top left of our support was the best.
Guest Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 We were right at the front and found it hard to get anything going really, sounded like the top left of our support was the best. Top left and top right were pretty good as far as i could tell, I was behind that massive Leicester City flag and also found it hard to get much going round me. Seems we always have this problem at so called 'big' away games. Didn't think that much to the Toon support to be honest, maybe that was just me though
lavrentis Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 This old person behind me was moaning about people standing up but in the end he stood up anyway. I was quite dissapointed with how many people sat down.
Ozwin Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 Whereas out support wasn't ridiculously loud I didn't think it was bad at all. on the NUFC forum they were saying how we were silent, maybe after the goal went in but all through the first half I thought we showed a good account of ourselves.
James. Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 On the TV the support from Leicester sounded quality (particularly bearing in mind you were all shoved high up in the stand). Much more consistent than the Newcastle fans who only seemed to pipe up after the goal.
Cobbo Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 Enjoyable couple of nights in the Toon. Shame we lost out in the end but overall it wasn't a bad performance. Quite an odd experience watching a game so high up!
Guest Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 Was talking to my mate who's a newcastle fan and was there last night, he though it was pretty even and said that we'd got a good team on the go, and was impressed with Wayne Brown Apparently it's half a mile from the highest seat up there to the centre spot. Random fact of the day

I would of gone with there view, i think it was where i was positioned, and maybe its a little like a ground in the accoustics? But i did here us sing we forgot you were here, which really confused me!
Maybes Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 This old person behind me was moaning about people standing up but in the end he stood up anyway. I was quite dissapointed with how many people sat down. Only on the left hand side people sat down. I was only 4 rows up and everyone was stood where I was.

marbelladave Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 All this talk of Gallagher playing behind the front two is a contradiction if you want to improve the attacks down the flanks. You can't have both. Of course you can! Well sort of. Play Gallagher (or Adams for that matter) in front of Wellens and Oakley, with two wide men, and someone to lead the line. Not my preferred option but a variation worth trying.

Ah well that would mean dropping one of Fryatt or Howard but everyone who's suggested playing Gallagher up front has said behind a front two which would mean one winger at best hence my 'contradictory' comment

Random fact of the day The legend is that it's a quarter of a mile, and I think even that is bollocks. Funny you should say that because earlier today I was thinking about 'facts' that are actually horseshit.
James. Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 Apparently it's half a mile from the highest seat up there to the centre spot. Nonsense.

I have said many times, on this forum and elsewhere, that playing 4-4-2 with 2 up and 2 wide will not cut it at this level! Last night was the perfect example, it took the Toon a while to work it out but as soon as they went 3 on 2 in central midfield after the break the game was pretty much over. It really does not matter how many strikers you play if you cannot give them decent ball it really doesn't matter, this is our prime problem. A five man midfield gives us better control and more possession. We can play the ball on the floor and hit the front man with short passes with our midfield already up in support.
FilboFox Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 From what I saw of the match, which was the second half, we could certainly have done better when going forward, but Newcastle were hounding us and closing us down very well... there was hardly any space to move for our forwards most of the time. That said, we should have created more when we did get a bit of space and certainly should have made more of the chances we did make. All in all, disappointing, but it was a game I wasn't expecting much from so I'm not too disheartened.
Nath Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 Am i the only one that thought their fans were average... Piped up abit after the goal, but still nothing special.
Ozwin Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 I think fitness played a part last night too, they chased everything down whereas we looked knackered after 70/75 mins.
JimmyK Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 As with Ipswich I ended up sitting with the home fans again. Was toward the other end of ground to the rest of the Leicester fans and they were easily heard in the first half. After the goal (which ruined the NUFC brand chips I was enjoying at the time) the home lot got a bit louder. At one point, a loud guy in front of me stood up and shouted 'sit down you smoggy c**t', I'm assuming he was talking to Nige.

All in all, disappointing, but it was a game I wasn't expecting much from so I'm not too disheartened. Three Newcastle players closing down Wellens and Oakley will do that! No time on the ball, no chance of creating very much. When the ball did get forward it was of poor quality and our strikers are not good enough to create something out of nothing on a regular basis. We need quality ball to our front men from our midfield which means an extra man in there to give us parity of numbers and the chance to create more for our forwards. That means changing from our regular 4-4-2 to something more inventive and flexible!
Sods Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 Am i the only one that thought their fans were average...Piped up abit after the goal, but still nothing special. We will never sit down, we will never sit doooooooown. Shove your seats up your arse, we will never sit down. I was close to them but i thought they were quality.
C-man Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 I'm never too disheartened if we lose by a goal and show some promise, but after reading some of this, I feel like a Chester City fan.
