davieG Posted 31 August 2009 Posted 31 August 2009 Maybe I was watching a different game but I thought they had several chances to put us to bed. Possession-wise we were pretty equal but they looked more likely in the final 3rd, we just hit a brick wall and resorted to long punts from Brown. 5 minutes from the end the stats showed Newcastle 8 attempts, 4 on target Leicester 9/4. It's just that ours mostly happened in the first half.
Daggers Posted 31 August 2009 Posted 31 August 2009 Which is why I regard the lack of threat from our wings as a one-off. We won't play against such quality fullbacks every week. Yep
martyn Posted 31 August 2009 Posted 31 August 2009 Today showed a realistic representation of where we are. A decent side who don't yet have quite enough to challenge at the sharp end. Thought Fryatt looked really sharp first half...I won't castigate him for that chance as I'm sure he'll get his share of goals this year.
Babylon Posted 31 August 2009 Posted 31 August 2009 Ok first off, that was some of the most one sided pathetic commentary I've ever heard. They were so far up Newcastles arse is was embarrassing. Onto the game, first half we looked alright and were more than a match for them. Pearson made a mistake though, I just don't understand playing Gallagher out wide considering someone like Adams has played well so far this year. I hope he doesn't turn into someone he feels he has to try and fit into the team. Both full backs looked sluggish and rarely supported, probably due to them worrying about being caught out for pace. When Newcastle came forward the midfield were too far away from the defenders to help and and when we attacked they were too slow to support. Will someone remind Dyer he is a winger, that's the 2nd or 3rd time this season he has virtually played off the strikers. Get white on your boots and give them something to worry about, wandering into a congested middle will do nothing for us. Their class in midfield showed and their defence always seemed that bit sharper and tighter than ours. We looked slow and sluggish for the whole second half. I don't think the gulf between us was huge, but if we want to finish comfortable top half we need to do more when we get into good positions in the final third.
colbo68 Posted 31 August 2009 Posted 31 August 2009 It wasn't meant to happen.Main points: Defense again solid, apart from ONE mistake that cost us dearly. Gallagher was too much of a threat in the first half and why he was taken off, I don't know. Fryatt to harmless, selfish. Wasting a big chance and not even acknowleding the presence of his teammates. At this point, with this form and attitude, I'd rather sell him than keeping him with his head somewhere else. Silly fouls in the second, loss of concentration. And most of all - no drive forward in open play that resulted in good chances. I can only hope we win our home games. No need to make this complex is there.... we were solid again defensively, created some chances BUT again didnt take them. The Fryatt/Howard partnership, as I'm tired of saying, was great in League One, but aint good enough in this division. You have a problem when your top striker consistently misses an open goal every game. This is why we will end up in a respectable mid-table position, but no higher - End of!
breadandcheese Posted 31 August 2009 Posted 31 August 2009 I agree with what you say,and fryatt convinced me again he cannot cut it at this level especially against the better teams i am sure that if we had a class striker tonight we would have pissed this game. Don't get me wrong, as far as I'm concerned Fryatt can more than cut it at this level. He has the ability, he is just frustrating.

Ricey Posted 31 August 2009 Posted 31 August 2009 I'm not disapointed to have lost, more annoyed we had no clue going forward in the second half. Once they had sussed N'Guessan and Howard we had no plan B. Once we went 1 down we had no composure, we should have brought Adams on instead of Llloyd 'I think I'm Messi' Dyer...at least we would have kept the ball and had a few decent crosses. Hopefully Pearson has learnt a lot tonight and we will work out a better plan when we are chasing the game.
Daggers Posted 31 August 2009 Posted 31 August 2009 we had no plan B. Story of last season when the going got tough.

The big punt up to Steve is almost embarassing really - it shows we have no idea of how to break a team down - I know you cant knock Nige for what he's done but I just think a better strike pair at this level and we'd have won tonight.

Dyer needs to get given the chance to run at people, and when that doesnt happen he is shite! Adams creates things, adds a bit of class which was needed. Dyer looked like he didnt want to play on the left. He spent more time behind Howard or on the right with N'Guessan!
DB11 Posted 31 August 2009 Posted 31 August 2009 Scummy Commentators. Talking bullshit for 90 minutes "Worst free kick i've ever seen" Well, come on, let's be fair... it was pretty awful.
Master Fox Posted 31 August 2009 Posted 31 August 2009 I would just like to say i thought we were shit that is all

Infuriates the hell out of me, it really does. He seems to do what he wants. He's a good winger, he should stay there. He's fooking useless in the middle As for the Fryatt chance, people need to look at that again. To have passed it to Howard he would have had to have played it behind him because of the positioning of the defender. It remained a difficult chance but really, don;t we want our no.1 goalscorer to be shooting from there. I'm fed up to the back teeth of people and their fickle Fryatt attitudes. He scores against Barnsley and he's going to score 20 league goals, next week he misses a chance, not a golden one by any means, but a chance nonetheless and he's not good enough again. Let's at least give him half a season. Judge him at Christmas. If he doesn't have 10 by then, then fine, pillory him
topharry123 Posted 31 August 2009 Posted 31 August 2009 u no i think we played well. We matched them, and in my opinion were arguably the better side. They created one chance and scored from it. Yes, we didn't create much more but the performance was promising. The only thing I think we're missing is the final ball. N'Guessan looked good beating players, and our other midfielders the same. However, when it came to crossing the ball we fell well short. I think in N'Guessan we have an Aaron Lennon kind of player. Someone that will beat the defenders but not be able to put in that killer ball. If we can get Dyer, Adams and N'Guessan to work on that and improve, we will be a premieship side next year. I have no doubts. Good performance boys, hard luck. Just take confidence that you went to a hostile ground of a premiership quality team and outplayed them for much of the game! Bring on May and that big party!
jimmer Posted 31 August 2009 Posted 31 August 2009 Pleased with first half performance, should have taken chances, end of. Hope Fryatt can kick this needing 3 shots to score habit. Neilson had a bad game, really not sure on him yet. N'guessan lost the ball so much it got frustrating, when a final ball occasionally came in it was hopeless. As it stands at the mo I would much rather have last years right flank pairing of Gilbert and gradel/cleverly, they had good pace and were solid. I can only hope this new pair can improve to that standard. Gallagher is not a left winger, can kind of understand that Pearson was going for experience on the night, but with Nicky Adams playing so well why change it? and when it clearly wasn't working in second half why not bring Adams on first? best performing winger so far? The one thing we needed was some good deliveries, we hardly attacked on the left all evening, poor choice IMO from Pearson. Besides that I saw some very good battling across the park tonight and lets not forget to give credit to Newcastle, they gave us no room to breathe in the second half at all. Back to the training ground and hope that we can keep our good home record going.
NorthernFox Posted 31 August 2009 Posted 31 August 2009 Just got back from the game and I thought we were unlucky not to get something out of the match. Thought we were much the better side first half and but for two decent saves and some poor finishing we should have been in front. Second half was a lot different, esecially from Smith who was immense. Still, premier side vs League 1 6 months ago and I don't think we did too badly overall. Play-Offs definately a possibility.

He haa almost become like Andy Cole in that sense needing three chances to score. But the ironic thing is I always think the goals he scores are often harder than the one he misses! Wouldn't say Neilson had a bad game. Yes he wasn't great, but I think the fact that N'Guessan was never in front of him he often got left by himself before getting caught out on the break. Gallagher is not a left winger and I agree we never attacked down the left. I was very disappointed in NP as I expected Adams to start or at least come on instead of Dyer.
Tomassi Posted 31 August 2009 Posted 31 August 2009 If you are at the game you get a better analysis of the match, but from watching it on the TV the gulf in class was plain to see, I'd be very surprised if Newcastle dont win the League they just have too much quality, and whilst our boys worked hard, there just wasnt a spark going for us.

Absolutely couldn't agree more on Fryatt, some of the goals he scores are fantastic, thats what makes it all the more frustrating with the misses. <_< Again with Dyer as others are saying he's driffting to far into the center playing off the strikers? has he been told to do this? get out wide use your pace and deliver the ball! Also listened to the commentary on 5 live whilst watching the game on a hurdy gurdy station and they were just as biased as the sky ones, we didn't get a mention!

They did pass the ball better yes. But how many attempts on goal did they have? no more than we did! they do have quality, but personally i think we matched their performance and we deserved a point out there. we have small flaws in our team, but we can improve, and i have no doubt in my mind that we will be at least top six at the end. I also will bet that we will get revenge on newcastle when they come to the fortress later on in the season!

If he doesnt get fed into space he becomes a passenger who doenst do anything. Adams changes a game with a bit of class from nothing, which is why i felt he should have started.
