Only saw some highlights this afternoon, from what I saw we should have drawn, possibly won, but didn't take our chances, Stevie being really unlucky with his header, It happens though, and from what I saw I think we were the better team, just. Obviously the result is what matters but deep down I felt a loss from this game, so to have only lost 1-0, to have played well from what I saw against one of the favorites (Despite me thinking Newcastle would struggle to start with) and one of the teams doing well in the Championship at the moment, I'm quite happy, on the other hand gutted we couldn't make the most of our gameplay and chance.

I thought we were by far the better side in the first half last night and dito for Newcastle in the second half.

Both Keepers made some good saves (Harper more) and both sides had an easy chance in front of goal each, they took theres and we didnt, simple as that.

A draw would of been a fair result but the higher the standard the more important it is to score as you dont get as many chances, thats our only worry but im happy enough with things because we have made a good start to the season and i have not seen anyone any better than us yet in this League.

Beat Holloways lot and everything is back on song!!

I always thought Newcastle would win the league before the season even started and was quite surprised when everybody was writing them off. That said a 0-1 defeat away wasn't a disastrous result.

Neilson winds me up. Runs up to where a right winger would be, then he won't fall back when the opposition are in our half.

I've noticed that as well. It doesn't seem to have cost us yet, though I'm sure it will sooner or later.

Decided to take my missus up to the game yesterday, hasnt been to a game for a while and was distinctly unimpressed by Steve Howard!

Decent atmosphere inside once we had negotiated the stairs, vertigo once inside!! first half, really got to grips with them early on, decent ball whipped in by N'Guessan but no one on the end of it, howards header, gallaghers free kick and fryatt being wasteful - really should have gone in at least a goal up maybe two.

Second half we looked like the side we were under holloway, lacking pace, creativity and completely blunt in attack, when they doubled up on N'Guessan it was route one to Howard, and waghorn didnt seem able to read the big mans flick ons...Dyer was absolutely woeful and as the game wore on Browny's passes were becoming worse along with Hobbs who didnt have the best of games.

There were positives but no real standout performances, my main concern isnt the lack of goals though, I think Wellens has enough quality to unlock any defence on his day, we need a midfielder to start weighing in with goals but my big worry is Neilson (10 years at Hearts and Id never heard of him, perhaps were finding out why!) and Weale, his kicking is very poor and although Oakley had a major part in their goal the shot was down his throat and should have at least been parried.

I should probably add that it was dissapointing because they were there for the taking first half, not a frustration over nigels tactics or the poor 2nd half, just that we should have buried them earlier on!!

Cheers to the lads on Coach 9 who kept us spirits up on the way back with the singing.

Bring on Holloway.

We lost away at Newcastle Utd - be honest it's a not a BAD result by one goal, especially considering we took the game to them. More possession (51% to their 49%!), some good chances and some great football at times.

I feel we should have drawn and that would have been a fair result from performances on the night.

End of the day, they took 3 points from their home fixture, as long as we do that when they travel to the Walkers, it's one of few teams we'll see this season where it's just 0 points for either side over all with 3 lost and 3 gained over the two meetings.

For all the work good that Wellens & Oakley did in midfield they never got close enough to the penalty box, with their ability they should be attacking the box more and getting in there we need attempts and goals from them.

Wellens in the last twenty was trying to tell us to push up. It's got to be one of the big pitches in the division and we didn't use the wings well enough. Dyer kept coming inside towards the end and I was very annoyed that Adams didn't come up sooner. The lad has bags of enthusiasm if sometimes not the quality. There was one moment shortly after the goal where Oakley and Wellens both pushed up and nearly cost us enough goal in a 4 v 4 situation.

I thought we were the better side in the first half comfortably, but thanks to Steve Harper and Matty Fryatt's inexcusable greed we didn't go in a goal up at half-time. I was practically tearing my hear out when he didn't pass it to one of two players who would surely have hit the back of the net with ease.

Second half was a different story. We stopped playing to our main strengths of using Howard against Danny Simpson at centre back and instead tried to play pretty football, a game which Newcastle were easily beating us at. Slowly they started piecing some more menacing chances together, but the final product was weak. Eventually they found that bit of quality which we hadn't got, and it won them the game.

It wasn't the greatest performance from us, but I don't think a draw would have been too much of an unfair result. In the end it was once again down to our lack of firepower up front and in midfield that didn't get us all three points. Simple as.

Pretty much agree with you. I was disappointed with a few performances but then I think back in retrospective, it's not at all bad. I have confidence, Pearson made a couple of mistakes last night but he showed enough commonsense last season to eradict the problem. In terms of Premiership experience, 10 of their starting eleven have had at least a season at that level. Whereas we have Fryatt, Wellens, Brown, Hobbs and Howard who you'd all say our best performers...none of them have had a full campaign at Premiership level. The game went pretty much as I suspected...we put up a good fight but they would get some quality for somewhere. I was gutted when their goal went in....just knew we wouldn't have it to get into it.

I think fitness played a part last night too, they chased everything down whereas we looked knackered after 70/75 mins.

They were crackered too I thought...as seen by just having ten men behind the ball and timewasting with twenty minutes left.

We could do a lot worse than lose 1-0 away at Newcastle, having 3 very, very good chances to go ahead.. I mean, 3-0 at half-time (yeah we've been there yadde yadda) would've been pretty safe.

It was an incredibly frustrating game to watch. We again passed the ball well for two thirds of the pitch, but created very little when it mattered. Some credit has to go their defence, though I felt we chose the wrong option on several occasions.

I'm encouraged by the overall performance - the defence again looked very solid. It's taken another screamer to score past us, and while we could have perhaps defended it better, I don't think Guthrie could have hit his shot any sweeter. Apart from that they only threatened from long range. I still can't believe we lost the game as although our second half performance wasn't as good as the first, we still looked comfortable and I couldn't seem them scoring.

Wellens showed his quality once more and it makes me wonder why he's spent the majority of his career in League One.

We look a half decent side. Quite solid at the back, but we were quite toothless up front to be honest. That said, we probably won't be up against a better defense all season...

Not true at all.

They had a 5 foot 9 right back playing at centre half and a right winger playing at right back.

We just didn't feed off Howard as much as we should have, and desperately lacked width, even when Dyer came on, both him and N'guessan were constantly infield, leaving Nielson and Berner to provide crosses, when we all know that isn't part of their games.

I agree with your comments. We (NUFC) have been dodgy with decent crosses and set pieces for some time now due to our unsettled defence. The couple of crosses that did come in looked very dangerous as we had not covered our areas correctly (in one case leaving two unmarked in the box). This could have been exploited better by the foxes in the game. I said earlier today that I also thought you will need to get better support to your striker to monopolise on the possession that you had. Its no good keeping the ball, then passing to a big lad with nobody around him for support.

I also just want to mention again (I was on here earlier today checking what you all thought) that it s great to see such a good away crowd for a Monday night Sky game. I think our crowd is a little more vocal this season despite having 10,000 less in the crowd.

It's also great to hear your stories of those that came up here for a couple of days to enjoy themselves. Hope you made the most of the hospitality! By the way, we don't charge for breathing our Geordie air as some of you lot would have us all believe. Most of our fans were crapping themselves for this season as it doesn't matter what 'talent' you have on the pitch. If they play and act like a bunch of disgruntled school kids then we would just bounce down another division. If anything, I would say our start to the season has been a surprise to us and not expected. Leicester put in a good shft last night and probably deserved more out of the game if I'm honest.

Was it mainly 'match and back to work for you lot' or did any of you have a cracking night on the Toon?

I would like to thank the Newcastle Police and St johns people who helped me last night, when I was struggling to breath, very friendly people. We was unlucky to loose, fryatt needs to learn to pass more.

Good to know there was such efficient help required in such situations.

I did think a couple of times that I'd probably be struggling with breathing myself if I didn't have my inhaler, especially at that height.

Cracking night on the Toon for less than a fiver. Almost every Newcastle fan we met in town after offered to buy us a drink...made all the piss taking much easier to bare. Used to live up there though so knew how friendly it'd be.

As for the game I agree with what others have said. Good passing and movement throughout up until the final third. Thought a draw would have been fair. Haven't watched the highlights yet but for the goal it seemed like we backed off a bit which is a shame.

Overall a good night though and not too disheartened by the result.

Naturally disappointed with last night`s result like everyone else, very frustrated by the decision making skills of some of our players. I can remember A few examples off the top of my head, nguessan shooting when in a better passing position, fryatt doing the same and I think that was most costly one! had 2 players to pass it to but no decides to take the shot on. We Don`t Get Oakley on the ball enough in the middle of the park, there were times last night when he was lacking a decent pass to feet when breaking from defence or when he was in there half and chasing an over hit ball. I liked what I saw of gallagher and he came more into the game as it went on, clearly still lacking in fitness coming off as early as he did, think he will only get better for us now. Distribition out of defence was poor, Some of brown`s forward ball`s if not all of them were awful, Can`t help but think that maybe pearson is waiting for an opportunity to play tunchev, I haven`t actually seen him play a full game from last season, but im pretty sure he is better with his passing etc.

Going forward Think we have to find something that works up front, from the games we have played so far it worries me that although we have a good midfield where are the goals gonna come from, As much as everyone rates howard as key for us I still think he is a clumsy player at times, Id like to see kermorgant play and see how he differs from howard. Would like to get some peoples opinion`s on berner too and if they are quite happy for mcgivern to come in and play at left back instead of him and even myself a fryatt fan beginning to think if he doesn`t takes chances like one last night, do we give waghorn a run in the team???

Agree with everything you say. Finishing has to improve, and whilst I am normally one saying we dont have enugh long shots, not one got on target yesterday!

Wellens was doing most of the work in central midfield last night. The passing throughout the team got noticeably worse as the game went on.

Berner's been adequate at left-back this season, nothing more. I'd like to see McGivern come in for the Blackpool game, and possibly Tunchev for Hobbs as well.

I'm not convinced about Fryatt's abilities at Championship level, but Pearson clearly has faith in him and won't drop him for Gallagher or Waghorn any time soon.

I am a keen admirer of Richie Wellens. Hes been superb thus far.

Very true

I know there's a lot of focus on Fryatt's miss (which was pretty horrific, has to be said). But is it me, or did Howard's header take a very slight deflection, gifting it towards Harper (who knew little about it) rather than between him and the defender on the line? Clearly, I have been watching the highlights too many times...

For what reason?

Hobbs has done nothing wrong to be dropped, especially for someone lacking match practice.

What team have you been watching?!?!?!?

It wasn't a slight deflection it was pretty big. I think it was probably going wide if it hadn't have hit Steven Taylor.

Strikers scoring goals is once again the problem thus far.

We have only scored 4 goals in 5 league games, and 1 of them was down to a lucky deflection for Waghorn, another a lucky deflected free kick that fell to Fryatt at Bramall lane.

And we've missed a penalty.

Fryatt missed the crucial chance at Newcastle which cost us the points.

Few goals and missed chances got us relegated last time, and a lack of goals again will ruin our playoff challenge and probably finish us up in 12th-15th place.

We had scored 7 goals in the opening 5 games last time out. We're already 3 behind.

It's up to Fryatt really, if he continues to miss chances like that then we will be no where near the playoffs, Howard isn't a goalscorer, and you can't see NP dropping Fryatt and Howard to give others games to start scoring.

We've only scored more goals so far than Swansea, Scunny and the bottom 2.

Sides currently in the top 8 average a massive 9 goals each in 5 games already, our defence is decent we need goals.

If this lack of goals continues then giving Dj a squad number is a must.

And the midfield don't even get as far forward to support Howard, let alone start free scoring.
