lavrentis Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 Would of been a different game if Fryatt had scored. Looked decent first half second half Newcastle closed us down more but we didn't look that bad to be honest. Good game enjoyed it but broke down on the A1 coming back so didnt get back till 4am.
Uncle Albert Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 First defeat of the season and to be honest I thought it was going to come earlier than this, so I wasn't so pissed off with the defeat but we could easily of come away with a point last night, maybe even more. Newcastle didn't create much apart from the goal, think Weale only made one save from a tame Nolan shot in the first half. Was really impressed with Wellens and Oakley last night, they for me won the battle in the middle of the park and they were playing against two good midfielders who shouldn't be playing Championship football. Oakley never wasted the ball last night, he isn't the quickest but his mind is, he is very quick to read the play and Wellens got the ball down well and used it pretty well aswell. N'Guessan drifted in and out to much last night, first 20 minutes of the game he had the beating of Jose Enrique everytime but then only shown in glimpses what he can do and I don't like seeing Gallagher on the wing. Neither of the full backs impressed me, Neilsen dived into much and wasted the ball and Berner was to slow into a tackle and slow in supporting Gallagher, especially as Gallagher came into the middle to get in the play, Berner should of bombed on down the left to create the width. Fryatt was alright but was abit to greedy infront of goal, why he didnt pass the ball to Howard when he turned Steven Taylor inside out I will never know, Fryatt needed to anticipate more aswell when Howard won the header, same with Waghorn. Why Adams didnt come on ahead of Dyer I will never know. All in all though this is our first loss this season in the League and we are still 8th in the league, a win against Blackpool and this defeat will soon be forgot about and we get to see Holloway lose.

This. Fryatt is not clinical enough. Yes he had a very good year last year but he should have had 40 goals. This time he has scored two in the league when it should be more like 4.
Bert Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 Anyone else wondering what the fook about 100 yank kids on a school trip with villa merchendise in were doing in our end? Yes. Me. Still fuming.
lavrentis Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 Ha I saw them yanks in their red coats. Looked a bit out of place really.
Milky Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 Sure they weren't canadian? The Ian Marshall lot wore red.
Bert Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 Sure they weren't canadian? The Ian Marshall lot wore red. Either way. It was still annoying, and rather embarrassing in the away end, no wait the ground, when they traipse in wearing Villa gear. Even more so when they keep shouting "Socccccccccccccccccccccer"
markbsac Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 what the geordies think about us on footymad.....come on guys give em it back they do seem to think there so superior to us ! http://boards.footymad.net/forum.php?tno=3...;mid=2124732143
MC Prussian Posted 1 September 2009 Author Posted 1 September 2009 Anyone else wondering what the fook about 100 yank kids on a school trip with villa merchendise in were doing in our end? Weren't they with Ian Marshall as part of his Football School thing? And btw, they're actually Canadian.
Fox92 Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 He was completely ineffective last night. This guy needs to play further up the pitch. If Howard could hold up the ball better rather than just flick the ball onI would dare even suggest a 4-5-1 formation with the talented players we have now. Don't think he was completely ineffective. By completely ineffective I would put N'Guessan there not Gallagher. Futher up the pitch, do you mean being Howard or give him the 'free role'?? Not much point in having Dickov to do the second bit when he has no chance of doing the first, if thats what you were suggesting? What are you suggesting? No, it's just that the Newcastle defence had no trouble and wern't put under much trouble. It was a fairly easy game for them But what Dickov does, is comes and rattles the defence, like it was his 'rattling' that caused the corner (and then goal) at home against Leeds last season etc...

Guest Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 'Can you really see Norway?' Who on earth.......?
markbsac Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 They still would if they were in league two and we were in the premier. yeswe should be thankfull for the newcastle air that they allowed us to breathe with them last night i suppose !
Joe. Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 I thought we were the better side in the first half comfortably, but thanks to Steve Harper and Matty Fryatt's inexcusable greed we didn't go in a goal up at half-time. I was practically tearing my hear out when he didn't pass it to one of two players who would surely have hit the back of the net with ease. Second half was a different story. We stopped playing to our main strengths of using Howard against Danny Simpson at centre back and instead tried to play pretty football, a game which Newcastle were easily beating us at. Slowly they started piecing some more menacing chances together, but the final product was weak. Eventually they found that bit of quality which we hadn't got, and it won them the game. It wasn't the greatest performance from us, but I don't think a draw would have been too much of an unfair result. In the end it was once again down to our lack of firepower up front and in midfield that didn't get us all three points. Simple as.
davieG Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 I've just been putting together the 'highlights' and although I've managed about 8 minutes apart from Fryat's miss and Guthrie's goal neither side produced anything really threatening, there's a total dearth of goal bound incidents. Both teams had plenty of possession in mid field but neither team really made anything of it. I guess it's more worrying for us because we had our first choice strikers out there.

True, but they came up against a team who went virtually 'all men behind the ball' when they scored. And they had an alright defence overall. I'm being optimistic here, so I'm sure that they'll be fine.
Ozwin Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 It's amazing how knackering a 9 hour drive is. I was absolutely frazzled last night. Fair play to anyone who's going Plymouth away, I don't envy you at all.
Dames Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 Anyone else notice that scar thing Wayne Brown had on the back of his head? Is it like what Tony Stark has on his chest, Enabling him to draw power from it and win headers non stop? Just a thought thats all.
Criggers Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 Don't think he was completely ineffective. It was just the comment that said we need a finisher and then it followed up saying dickov hussles and gets in their face. I meant that there is still no point in having a hussler if they cant finish.... re Gallagher: I don't think I made myself very clear on this bit either, but by further up the pitch, i mean more up front and more central. I think Gallagher could be an extremely good threat in this league especially linking the forward to attack via Wellens/Oakley. I would love to see that pair pulling the strings with two wider 'free' wingers and then Howard in the middle. Maybe Villa can loan us Heskey to hold it up? I get the feeling our best players are all in midfield at the moment and would like to see us using them. Especially away from home/on wider pitches, lets see a 4-5-1. Wellens and Oakley with Gallagher playing the 'free' role if thats what you want to call it. We're hardly Chelsea i know but i would still like to see it tried one day.

That's nigh on how I'd have summed it up too, although I don't think it was that extra bit of 'quality' that won it for them, more that we didn't take the clear chance/s we had ended up costing us at least one point. It was overall a very evenly matched game. I was screaming at Fryatt to pass it when he was through, not that he'd have heard me or any one of our fans from that far away from the pitch
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 I think we now have some idea now, of just about how good we really are. I am sure we can play better, but I thought we lacked initiative, and confidence. Newcastle were hit hard by injuries, but still outplayed us, particularly in the second half, and they deserved their win. We did not show any real quality, and there was no passion. The desire to win seemed to vanish when we went a goal down, and we played into Newcastle's hands, by continually passing the ball backwards. However, the season is just really starting, and hopefully we can learn from this display, but I think the likes of Fryatt, will have to turn their chances into goals, for a top half finish.
Raj Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 Dont see the need for ALL the negative comments after ydays 'mauling' Nolan and Barton in themselves are probably worth more than our entire squad so we didnt do THAT bad really. I wouldnt have expected too much from a newly promoted team who havent spent millions against a newly relegated team who are worth millions and millions....
