JoeyB Posted 18 October 2009 Posted 18 October 2009 Police are preparing for a second day of demonstrations at a power station in Nottinghamshire after at least 80 people were arrested there on Saturday.More than 1,000 protesters are at the Ratcliffe-on-Soar facility where three police officers and a man thought to be a protester earlier suffered injuries. Police said there have been "concerted efforts" to breach the perimeter fence. Organisers of the "Great Climate Swoop" event have pledged to halt production at the coal-fired power station. Several people gained entry to the site on Saturday as officers clashed with protesters. Aim 'not conflict' A policeman was airlifted to hospital with head injuries but was later discharged. The Camp for Climate Action - one of the groups which has organised the demonstration - issued a statement wishing the officer a "speedy recovery". The group added its aim was "to confront the causes of climate change, not get into conflict with the police". Another man, believed to be a protester, also required treatment while two other officers sustained minor injuries. Police and protesters clash at Ratcliffe-on-Soar Officers said they have had to "alter their policing style" Seven men and three women - aged between 19 and 53 - were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit aggravated trespass before the protest began. Dozens more were held during the day and a force spokeswoman said: "Police have experienced concerted and determined efforts to tear down perimeter fencing. "Some officers at the fences have been assaulted and, while some protesters managed to enter the site, police remain in control of the site. "Protesters and the public should be aware that police have had to alter their policing style in response to concerted efforts to tear down perimeter fencing and enter the site." But activist Joanna Gonzales said: "It has been inspiring to see so many people who are prepared to take direct action and face arrest to show that this power station needs to be closed for good. "The Swoop shows the movement against coal power is strong and growing fast. "We hope even more people will get involved as we gear up towards the UN climate summit in Copenhagen." Ratcliffe-on-Soar was chosen as a target in an online vote following a Climate Camp held in London in August. The plant's owners, E-On, said: "We're already closing three of our other fossil-fired power stations." The company added it was "pushing forward with lower carbon options that include developing new wind farms, gas plants, cleaner coal and nuclear that will allow us to tackle the threat of climate change while also ensuring security and affordability of energy supplies". Link So there protesting about the coal power station, but i bet 50% of them have drove here which has increased the polution rate Nottinghamshire police have had to icrease staffing budget to cope, which the government would have to pay for Increase of police means more police cars/ vans/ transport on the road and that burns more petrol/ diesil which polutes the atmosphere they will all use electricity which at least some of it will come from the ratcliff powerstation
Phube Posted 18 October 2009 Posted 18 October 2009 Bloody hippies!! I'd like to have seen them organise, arrive and stage this protest without using electricity!! Tw*ts!!!
JoeyB Posted 18 October 2009 Author Posted 18 October 2009 Is this near Kegworth by any chance? Ratcliffe powerstation, yeah it is. Loads of police swarming round here and the airport incase they make a break for the airport
Jay Posted 18 October 2009 Posted 18 October 2009 it's not the easiest place to get to on foot or even by horse I'm sure going by horse increases the greenhouse gases, you put fuel in resulting in toxic gases!! I believe they should use all the facilities they have on hand maybe some form of electric cattle prod to keep them back. I'm sure they used pigeon power to arrange this demo, sending messages by flight must be the only "eco friendly way" they obviously didn't use the internet with power hungry computers or by mail as that would involve planes and vans to get letters to each other
Father Ted Posted 18 October 2009 Posted 18 October 2009 Ratcliffe powerstation, yeah it is.Loads of police swarming round here and the airport incase they make a break for the airport Hmmmm... I've got a match this afternoon in Normanton-on-soar, will I be able to get there fine?
Unit Posted 18 October 2009 Posted 18 October 2009 they do my head in, there was a guy on the news saying they were going to break in, surely thats arrestable for conspiracy to commit tresspass or some dodgy law? they should get done for wasting police time.
JoeyB Posted 18 October 2009 Author Posted 18 October 2009 Hmmmm... I've got a match this afternoon in Normanton-on-soar, will I be able to get there fine? Normanton, yeah, thats just outside of hathern, this is about 10 miles away, maybe more
purpleronnie Posted 18 October 2009 Posted 18 October 2009 Bloody hippies!!I'd like to have seen them organise, arrive and stage this protest without using electricity!! Tw*ts!!! Maybe just maybe there are alternative ways of producing electricity.
Phube Posted 18 October 2009 Posted 18 October 2009 Maybe just maybe there are alternative ways of producing electricity. Yes... Nuclear, but they'll protest against that!! And don't talk about Wind
JoeyB Posted 18 October 2009 Author Posted 18 October 2009 Yes... Nuclear, but they'll protest against that!!And don't talk about Wind Wind they will need the electricity the power station produces to put them together
purpleronnie Posted 18 October 2009 Posted 18 October 2009 Theres no perfect way as the protesters will tell you but there are less harmful ways.
lildave3 Posted 18 October 2009 Posted 18 October 2009 I personally think this should just be the new clique thread.
lildave3 Posted 18 October 2009 Posted 18 October 2009 Can I join the clique? Ask Nussul, he runs it.
Guest Bilo Posted 18 October 2009 Posted 18 October 2009 Ask Nussul, he runs it. Is it like the Freemasons? I'm up for all that funny handshake shit.
davieG Posted 18 October 2009 Posted 18 October 2009 Why are they protesting at this power station it's been open for about 40 years = a bit late to be protesting.
purpleronnie Posted 18 October 2009 Posted 18 October 2009 Well climate changes have not been recorded in any great detail until the last couple of years.
Jon the Hat Posted 18 October 2009 Posted 18 October 2009 I really wish they were making a point. Sadly they are pointless.
davieG Posted 18 October 2009 Posted 18 October 2009 Well climate changes have not been recorded in any great detail until the last couple of years. Was that in response to my post? If so, well they're not going to just pull it down are they, that would be a complete waste of resources and they'd have to build something else to replace it and they have improved it's efficiency significantly. They'd be better off protesting about how the world wastes electricity. Why not persuade the government to make all new house builds self sufficient with solar power and all the other options currently available. Or perhaps, instead of giving people money towards new cars a trade in for old inefficient heating boilers. There's hundreds of ways we could use less electricity, practically every electrical item out there could be made more efficient.
