Uncle Albert Posted 27 November 2009 Posted 27 November 2009 When do we know what pot's teams are in?
Sly Posted 27 November 2009 Posted 27 November 2009 I thinking the seeding comes out on the 2nd December.
Uncle Albert Posted 27 November 2009 Posted 27 November 2009 I thinking the seeding comes out on the 2nd December. Oh nice one, surely we are in the top seeding pot? Spain - Brazil - England - Portugal - France - Argentina - Germany - Italy

Ford Super Sunday Posted 27 November 2009 Author Posted 27 November 2009 Please Don't forget that the top seeding pot will also include South Africa as hosts So it's seven of the best teams. And Dec 2nd IS when the seedings come out
Sly Posted 27 November 2009 Posted 27 November 2009 Oh nice one, surely we are in the top seeding pot? Spain - Brazil - England - Portugal - France - Argentina - Germany - Italy I think the seedings are most likely to be as follows: POT A Spain - ranked 1st in the world Brazil - ranked 2nd in the world Italy - ranked 4th in the world Germany - ranked 6th in the world France - ranked 7th in the world Argentina - ranked 8th in the world England - ranked 9th in the world S Africa - ranked 86th in the world POT B Netherlands - ranked 3rd in the world Portugal - ranked 5th in the world Greece - ranked 12th in the world Switzerland - ranked 18th in the world Serbia - ranked 20th in the world Denmark - ranked 26th in the world Slovenia - ranked 33rd in the world Slovakia - ranked 34th in the world POT C USA - ranked 14th in the world Mexico - ranked 15th in the world Australia - ranked 21st in the world Honduras - ranked 38th in the world Japan - ranked 43rd in the world S Korea - ranked 52nd in the world New Zealand - ranked 77th in the world N Korea - ranked 84th in the world POT D - Cameroon - ranked 11th in the world Cóte d'Ivoire - ranked 16th in the world Chile - ranked 17th in the world Uruguay - ranked 19th in the world Nigeria - ranked 22nd in the world Algeria - ranked 28th in the world Paraguay - ranked 30th in the world Ghana - ranked 37th in the world These will then be broken into eight groups of four teams. Knockout Winners A v Runners B Winners C v Runners D Winners E v Runners E Winners G v Runners H Winners B v Runners A Winners D v Runners C Winners F v Runners E Winners H v Runners G Link to SEEDINGS SITE , which details potenital pots. So England could potenitally have a group with Netherlands, Mexico and Cote d'Ivoire, or Slovenia, N Korea and Ghana.
StanSP Posted 27 November 2009 Posted 27 November 2009 Have a feeling we'll get Netherlands or Portugal in group stages, and could be a decider of us getting through group stages...
Fosse Boy Posted 27 November 2009 Posted 27 November 2009 Shame that North Korea can't be paired with the USA if those are the groupings.

I don't really get how they decide the seedings so forgive me if I'm missing something obvious, but why would Netherlands not be in the top seed pot. They're ranked 3rd in the world and were one of the best qualifiers. And also Pot's C and D look strange too.
Edmund Posted 27 November 2009 Posted 27 November 2009 I think the seedings are most likely to be as follows:POT A Spain - ranked 1st in the world Brazil - ranked 2nd in the world Italy - ranked 4th in the world Germany - ranked 6th in the world France - ranked 7th in the world Argentina - ranked 8th in the world England - ranked 9th in the world S Africa - ranked 86th in the world POT B Netherlands - ranked 3rd in the world Portugal - ranked 5th in the world Greece - ranked 12th in the world Switzerland - ranked 18th in the world Serbia - ranked 20th in the world Denmark - ranked 26th in the world Slovenia - ranked 33rd in the world Slovakia - ranked 34th in the world How does that work What divine right have England got over The Netherlands? I can understand Portugal being in Pot B as they qualified via play off but that makes no sense that England and few other lower ranked nations are ahead of Netherlands.
StanSP Posted 27 November 2009 Posted 27 November 2009 Are seedings solely based on performances from WC Quals?
Finnegan Posted 27 November 2009 Posted 27 November 2009 Depends how much it goes on qualifying strength. I don't know that much about how it works, I'll be the first to admit, but England topped a far harder group with 3 more points than the Dutch. I've just noticed that Spain won every, single game in their group though. That's incredible, Jesus. Might not have had the hardest group but even so. Hope Wales get a group like Group 2 next time out! Jesus. No disrespect to the Swiss or the Greeks but that was a bit lightweight.

It wasn't that hard, all the teams were pretty flimsy (including Croatia) apart from a stodgy Ukraine team. And we got 3 more points than the Dutch because we played 2 games more. For me it would be ridiculous not to have the Dutch in with the top seeds. England should be there too, or at least be given more of a case than the Frogs and the Argies.
Guest Bilo Posted 27 November 2009 Posted 27 November 2009 Are seedings solely based on performances from WC Quals? Apparently it's based on WC qualifying performance and performance in the previous two tournaments. Holland picked up less points in qualifying than England this season, only made it to the last 16 in 2006 and failed to qualify altogether in 2002. Though it does seem strange that South Africa are seeds, even if they are hosts. I imagine pretty much everyone will be praying they're paired with South Africa at the group stage and avoid the big guns.

I thought the ranking system was based on current performances over the last few years Trust Fifa to complicate things.
Uncle Albert Posted 2 December 2009 Posted 2 December 2009 Top Seeds confirmed! Spain - Brazil - England - Netherlands - Germany - Argentina - South Africa - Italy Means we can get Portugal or France in our group.
C-man Posted 2 December 2009 Posted 2 December 2009 SA? Do the hosts always get a top seeding? What a joke.
Sir Fynwy Posted 2 December 2009 Posted 2 December 2009 I'm not really interested in any international football but wonder why they feel the need to seed cup draws, cup competitions should be about the team that can beat all the others winning the cup. Seeding is just about keeping selected teams in the competition until the later stages to feed fans who will only watch 'their' team, it's a cop out.

A lot of the seeding is done to ensure a regional spread in each of the groups so that for instance that all of the south American teams are drawn in the same group meaning only 1 or maybe 2 could go on to the next stage. Also who wants Japan against Algeria in the final?Apart from Japanese and Algerians.
Webbo Posted 2 December 2009 Posted 2 December 2009 FIFA The FIFA Organising Committee approved today the procedure for the Final Draw of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™, which will be held in Cape Town on Friday 4 December. The seeding was based on the October 2009 FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking (which you can see by clicking on the link to the right), and Brazil, Spain, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Argentina and England are therefore the seven squads that join hosts South Africa as seeded teams for the Final Draw. The committee also approved the composition of the other pots as well as the procedure for the final draw: • Pot 2 will be composed of teams from Asia (Australia, Japan, Korea DPR, Korea Republic), North, Central America and the Caribbean (Honduras, Mexico, USA) and Oceania (New Zealand) • Pot 3 will include teams from Africa (Algeria, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria) and South America (Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay) • Pot 4 will have the remaining European teams (Denmark, France, Greece, Portugal, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Switzerland) • hosts South Africa will be automatically positioned as A1; the other seeded teams will be drawn into the other groups B-H, but will always be in position “1” of their group • groups will be drawn from A to H and the positions in the group will be drawn for Pots 2 to 4 • geographical criteria will also be respected, meaning that no two teams from the same confederation will be drawn in the same group (except European teams, where a maximum of two will be in a group). For example, South Africa cannot play the African teams from Pot 3 and Argentina and Brazil cannot be drawn against the three remaining South American teams. Information on the procedure of the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking can be found by clicking on the link to the right.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 2 December 2009 Posted 2 December 2009 My excitement is at an unexpected level. South Africa top seed is a joke tho

That would never happen because they aren't anywhere near the best teams, seeding is bollocks in any tournament and panders to sponsors, advertisers and fans who only want to see the 'big' teams. What would be wrong with a group of all europeans or a weak group if it was drawn fairly?
Ford Super Sunday Posted 2 December 2009 Author Posted 2 December 2009 My excitement is at an unexpected level. South Africa top seed is a joke tho Not for me, I don't mind. I think it's right that the host nation is given the best possible chance of doing well. Though it's not like FIFA have handed them and easy draw on a plate... they could still end up in an awful group. However, the seedings make it feel like the draw is so close now... I can barely contain my enthusiasm for this draw... for god sake Friday just come!
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 2 December 2009 Posted 2 December 2009 Still preying for England then Algeria and either Slovakia, Slovenia or Greece
