Pearson article.

The problem is that clubs need the media to generate interest and the media cannot exist without information from clubs, this is why SKY and others add media access clauses to their contracts. I applaud anyone who uses the media to the clubs advantage but you open yourself up to whinging comments from them.

Obviously the media has it's own interests and hence alot of people dispise them. But in the case of Leicester or any football club, media is a source of info to the fans, they provide insight and can help build a relationship between the club and the fans!!

I think Pearson should focus on the positives the media can bring, rather then the negatives!!!

And the idea that journalists ever see their job as helping out a manager who is struggling is laughable. The media thrive on controversy and conflict, cos people doing their jobs well and quietly is mostly not news-worthy.

This, very much so.

We are within a few points of top of the league and no-one in the national media seems to have noticed, Even the coverage of our last two games was all focused on the opposition, neither of whom are doing as well as us...

To my mind this is excellent, low key management that is spot on for where we are at this time. I have been unfortunate enough to have to work with modern 'tabloid' style jounalists and they are in the main complete tools. The very idea that they would 'help' the subject of their stories is laughable.

Dirt sells and self obsessed tabloid and TV jounalists are shit stirrers of the first order!

Just one other thing, as City fans we get very little news coming out of the Walkers, the OS is crap just the usual media bullshit several days late but it would be nice to hear a bit more on such things as the progress of our injured players and how are youngsters and fringe players are doing.

Err.....Thats it!

Twisting your words? printing complete crap? You don't need the media to bring profile to the club. Success speaks for itself. You win games people notice you, Pearson could never give a press conference but if we are top of the league in any league we will get positive publicity.

A link between club and fans is a fair point, but i would rather know nothing then for them to print a load of pointless rubbish. I would rather the players be training then doing pointless interviews that a limited amount of people listen to anyway, i would rather Pearson gave no information about our plans for the next game because opposition teams could use this to their advantage.

When was the last time you actually got information that filled your taste buds from any manager or club interview?

Pearson is clever with what he says, he doesn't give anything away. I think that is the best way with today's media because they don't print what is said but we they want to be said, or what makes a good story.

Yeah there are plenty of negatives, like I said, It would be better if he focused on the positives, there's loads of us who wish to know some insight. In city's case the Leicester Mercury rarely prints anything contreversial and the OS does try....whether Pearson likes it or not the rest of the media will print whatever it's in there own interests, so why not try to use the positive elements!!!

Fair point. Mercury and OS aren't to bad with what they print. However at press conferences you get the twerps that are looking for a story. One bad word, or one slip up and suddenly sky sports news is printing some trollop about DJ falling out with Nige, or Gradel has a drug problem. The manager has to protect his own interests as well as the players. The media let themselves down so often. If they were more trustworthy with what they print, then maybe the fans would be given more truthful information regarding the team they support.

I guess it just depends which way you see the media. I agree that the revenue and promotion of the club can be benefited by using the media wisely. You just have to be careful not to fall into their traps.

A friend of mine used to be a physio at England U21's while Pearson was involved in that aspect. My friend said that Pearson is bloody stern with his players but is always the man to help you out.

My friend said about a time one of the U21's got into a fight, Pearson called him over and sat him down, then Nige said nothing and just stared deepl,y into this boys eyes. The boy burst into tears and dished the dirt on everything that had happened. Nige replied with "You stupid *rick, but atleast you have now told me the truth, now i can help you out!"

Weeksy (my friend) said nige is stern but by being that way he gets the best out of most people. Weeksy holds him massively high regard and being a budding manager myself i take my hat off to the way Nige works.

As for the media, pah waste of time and paper tbh i dont blame Pearson for telling them to stick there heads back in the sand.

Men who stare at goats eh?

I found the article a little strange. I've think Tanner's been pretty good so far from what I've read, but it's a little disappointing seeing him pretty much slag us and our manager off when we're 4th in the league. Why he has to bring West Brom into it I don't quite know.

I do, however, understand that journalists need material to fill their copy every day, and Pearson does not help this. So from his point of view I can understand his feelings somewhat. However, is this blog post seriously going to change Pearson's views on the media? Completely the opposite you would have thought...

:giggle: You see some of you guys would be good in the media twisting words to make a story

Leicester city manager Nigel Pearson reveals his stare was an inspiration for the makers of "The men who stare at goats".

My thoughts exactly. You just find something different to write about rather than jeopardising your standing among the fans. Surely? No?

No, he was right.

It's an entertainment business based around sport, and just because it has a large cultural dimension does not detract from this simple fact.

Nope, it's a sport, and any entertainment to be found is in the skill and competition on the pitch.

The media are trying to turn it into an etertainment industry to sell more subscriptions to Sky or Newspapers, if you have ever watched a Goal film or Dream Team or Footballers wives you will see that football and entertainment do not always mix.

All that I care about is what happens on the pitch and some times that is not entertaining, but it can still make me happy.

As mentioned before compare Holloway (sycophantic media whore) to Pearson (miserable git), they are 2 extremes but I know which I prefer. MON got it about right with the Media, but that was just his natural passion for things coming out, Gordon Strachan also springs to mind as some who handles the media well. I think they both have a contempt for certain types of journalists but have the wit to deal with them. I don't think Pearson will be appearing on Match of the day any time soon (except for post match interviews next season of course).

You are fully entitled to your opinion - no matter how wrong it may be.

What made it stranger was that I was ticked off by a City person for asking Jack Hobbs about Joe Mattock, the man I am sure all the fans are interested in and talking about at the moment. I was told to stick to questions about West Brom, so when Nigel said he wasn’t talking about Albion then it left me with just one question – so what are we supposed to talk about?

Was Hobbs part of the press conference, or is this worded just to make it look like he was?

Would a "..City person.." get involved to tell off a journalist during one of NFP's interviews?

Who gives a sh*t what hes like with the media?? So would you rather have a manager like Holloway, jovial with the media but no results on the pitch (yes I know that scenario has already happened).

I know you gotta keep people informed but somtimes they can be too intrusive (Fergie at half time yesterday still being interviewed by ITV when the 2nd half kicks off for example, if I was him i'd of declined that interwiew and got back to the duggout).

I've got no problems with Pearson, hes focused on the job (which is going well) and he comes accross that way in interviews which I havn't got a problem with.

Some managers seem to get distracted with the media and what they think and Pearson isn't one of those.

Holloway has got results everywhere he has been except Leicester. Lets face it he is probablly doing better currently than Pearson considering the difference in resources at Blackpool compared with Leicester although I doubt if Blackpool will maintain their position

Always thought personally the best mark of a manager's impact on a club is the legacy they leave. In which in the case, Holloway isn't the best. It's helped Holloway this year that he also been able to sign 3/4 quality players for this level regards of resources.

The difference is everywhere else he has been he inherited a small squad and little money for improvements, the first team picked itself and every week they went in as underdogs.

I was happy when we signed Holloway, and I think a lot of people were, but he proved that he couldn't manage a big squad and with money available he didn't know who to spend it on.

Holloway is a good manager for a plucky team that's punching above it's weight on minimal resources, and having a "character" like Holloway in charge helps to raise the club's profile. As it turned out he was exactly what we didn't need and his media profile served to undermine him and pissed off a lot of fans. Maybe the media looked on him favourably because he was very helpful to them, but he still got us relegated and he still lost his job, regardless of his attitude towards the media.

Yes. They have their media people there at the conferences to call time and welcome people into the room and they will geberally tell the journo's before the conference if any questions or topics are off-limits.

I'm being a bit harsh. A TV 'interview' with Ashley Cole (who I always reserve the greatest level of contempt for) did it for me this week. I'm not trying to belittle every hack who writes about the sport for those of us that enjoy good, informed football writing - in print and online.

My problem is less to do with the more traditional printed media (having a dig at Martin Samuel was a cheap shot, ok) but the proliferation of guff that blows forth from TV and radio. Player interviews, for me, are a waste of time. Those that have something to say are gagged from speaking openly by clubs, sponsors and the FA. The rest are a bunch of knuckle-draggers who cannot get past 'player-speak' and and a mono-syllabic stream of 'errs', 'umms' and 'y'knows'.

Sky Sports are the worse culprits, with the others not far behind. Sky generates this whole nonsense itself for a gaggle of overpaid, failed journalism graduates and mentally-retarded, gin-soaked suits like Phil Thompson and Paul Merson.

I can't stand Sralex, but I can see his point when he rails at the microphone wielding rabble in front of him before every game. I'm sure he'd have time to sit down with a proper journalist like Patrick Barclay or Henry Winter. The problem is that 90% of the sports media ensemble are idiots and wasters. Pearson knows it. Sralex knows it.

 I certainly sympathise with those comments which perhaps explain why I don't have Sky Sports and quickly learned to avoid the half-time and full-time interviews when I did.

Football is an entertainment business.
No it's not it's a sport.
No, he was right.

It's an entertainment business based around sport, and just because it has a large cultural dimension does not detract from this simple fact.

Nicky Horby, Fever Pitch:

"I go to football for loads of reasons, but I don't go for entertainment, and when I look around me on a Saturday afternoon and see those panicky, glum faces, I see that others feel the same. For the commited fan, entertaining football exists in the same way as those trees that fall in the middle of the jungle: you presume it happens, but you're not in a position to appreciate it. Sports journalists and armchair Corinthians are the Amazon Indians who know more than we do - but in another way they know much, much less".

Genius.
