Beckham has Asthma

Not really that interesting a story, but just watching BBC 6 o'clock news, and the tone of the report has annoyed me a little.

He's being held up as a hero, the reporter actually said "It's another victory for Beckham". How so? This may well help young people with asthma see that they can play top level sport with asthma, but he's hardly the hero of the piece, in fact he's the villan. He's apparently had the condition for years and has hidden it from the public. So how on earth is a showing people they can play sport with asthma, if anything he seems ashamed of the fact he has it. The real hero of the piece is the photographer who snapped him using the inhaler.

Sorry rant over.

David Beckham is a proper English hero.

Peter Taylor's a hero because he made him a hero when he made him England's Captain.

Given that Beckham has lived his life in a goldfish bowl since that goal against Wimbledon it almost beggars belief that it has taken so long for this to leak out (assuming, of course, this isn't some sort of sick marketing gambit).

Just think of all the people who would know about his condition and have kept schtum - it probably goes into the hundreds (including, I wouldn't be surprised, your finest investigative hacks). We were told about the result of that medical when he moved to Real (one of his legs was/is half an inch shorter than the other) - why was this inconvenient truth not included in the package?

Interesting that Beckham Global Industries Inc. have chosen to fess up now (come on now, this was no papparaqzzi scoop - Beckham knew the lens of the world was turned towards him as he sucked on his bong). I wonder whether this might be some sort of damage limitation exercise. Maybe they were frit that at least one canary was ready to sing so they decided to get the retaliation in first. Interesting that all the coverage of this 'shock development' also mentions the fact that six of the upcoming World Cup venues are above 3,000 feet.

Looks like football's Macavity has started his very own anti Beckham World Cup campaign...

Fair points.

He's still not the hero though is he. Kept it quiet for years and only revealed it when it suited him.

I have asthma. It's a bit of a bastard.

Fair enough, it's not Britain's biggest killer, but it's still a bastard.

Paul Scholes also has it.

Apparently it's not that uncommon amongst atheletes as we are led to believe.

20% of the last British Olympics team were asthmatics!

Did I hear that right?

Ah oki, I was wondering why he was using an inhaler before extra time in the MLS final, I assumed it was something to help rejuvenate him like... pure oxygen or something. In retrospect this makes a lot more sense.

And he never felt the need to hide the condition. Scholes has always been pretty much up front, and has used his position to raise awareness, along with some other sports stars.

It's almost as if Beckham's ashamed of it. :dunno:

How?

Some people deal with these conditions in their own way. So what if he hid it from the public.

Beckham knows he is a huge world star and everything he says, does and endoreses, holds alot of weight. People listen to him, buy the products he advertises, teams sell millions in shirts when he signs. He's an icon, he would have know what it meant to tell the world that as a top athlete he suffered from a breathing condition. Yet he kept it quiet.

First of all, as someone with asthma who likes to play sport, it is quite hard to hide. The fact that he has gone to the trouble of hiding it for so long, and is only 'outed' after a sneaky picture does make it look like he's gone out of his way.

Secondly, asthma is no big deal. It's not like he's got HIV and would be ridiculed even more because of it. Something like that I can see a player hiding. Asthma; nope.

Thirdly, as I've posted above, Scholes has used his position to increase awareness, along with other sports stars. Asthma is a condition that is misunderstood, and there is evidence that concerned parents don't allow their kids to do PE, and thus starts a spiralling decline into other health problems. Scholes, Paula Radcliffe, Iwan Thomas and Austin Healey all spring to mind, as they have the same type of asthma as me, "Exercise Induced Asthma", and this is the worst one for worried parents or excuse makers. Exercise and sport actually helps to manage the condition, and increase lung capacity and efficiency, which is they have all been involved in campaigns encouraging people to exercise and not hide behind asthma. Having a name like Becks in on the act would go further to stopping a growing problem. He must have known this, what with playing and training alongside Scholes for so long.

Exactly what I was trying to say, only put a damn site better.

awesome! i want a football shaped inhaler!

That's a terrible idea. Now I'm going to have to get you to sign a disclaimer saying you never mentioned this.

* Jots down initial sketches for business idea to be sent to dragons den.

By the way I'm not sure if you've seen the movie and I don't blame you if you haven't as it's an awful film but the main character in the film hides the fact he has asthma whilst trying to sign for Newcastle hence why I posted the cover.

I thought my asthma was well cool until I discovered Beckham has it. Now I couldn't look a bigger twat if I owned an Audi TT
