BoneDog Posted 25 November 2009 Posted 25 November 2009 It wouldn't matter if Beckham was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis and needed walking sticks, he would still get another 10 two minute substitute appearances for England to make him the most capped England player ever.

BoneDog Posted 25 November 2009 Posted 25 November 2009 the sad thing is, peter shilton could've had loads more caps had he not taken turns twixt the sticks with ray clemance I will literally cry into my Cornflakes if Dave equals or beats Peters record. Off topic but I just been looking at the number of caps players got and I can't believe Des Walker didn't get more than 59!
Samilktray Posted 25 November 2009 Posted 25 November 2009 I for one hope he becomes our most capped player. Love the man
BoneDog Posted 25 November 2009 Posted 25 November 2009 I don't dislike him but he aint no Shilton and I hope he only gets to 120 caps. Shilton is more of an England legend and deserves to have the honour ahead of Dave. Dave never was that good in my opinion.

Dave never was that good in my opinion. Oh dear. Shilton didnt single handly get us to a World Cup for a start, he also was a goalie so for him to reach 120 caps isnt really an achievement especially when you have a look at other nations goalkeeper's caps. Shilton is nowhere near more of an England legend than Beckham, Beckham to have made 120 caps as an outfield player is rediculous, players could only dream about that.

How many of Beckhams have been for a sub, quite a lot of his most recent ones I doubt many of Shilton's were. Anyway with so many pointless friendlies and subs getting a cap has become pretty meaningless these days although I'm sure the media have already prepared pages of script and pictures, including the fact that 'Peter Taylor made him Captain you know' ready for when he gets his 125.
Fox92 Posted 25 November 2009 Posted 25 November 2009 Bobby Moore played 90minutes of every game and therefore got a cap. Beckham plays for what; 5 - 30 minutes of a games if that when he comes on as a sub and gets a cap. It's not fair. Beckham is overrated, I don't like him. He doesn't use his left, he doesn't head the ball, he doesn't tackle and he doesn't score enough goals.

So Beckham has done alot more for England than Peter Shilton has, Beckham has been a brilliant servant to England and contributed so much more. I forgot standing in goal for 90 minutes is more worthy of a cap than being a player who has played right midfield, setting some so many England goals, scored alot of goals, took us to the World Cup thanks to his magic. So what if he is getting there now through coming off the bench, if anyone deserves it is David Beckham.

I don't think it's anything to do with who does what for England it's simply who's played the most games and I was just pointing out that Beckham's have been easier to come by and include many sub appearance no more no less. As I said they're pretty meaningless these days and I therefore am not that bothered if he gets them or not, what will piss me off is the usual over the top reporting which will occur when he does.

Well I think you deserve the amount of reporting, someone who has played that many games deserves all the recolection they get. David Beckham. Hero.

Radovan's Caravan Posted 25 November 2009 Posted 25 November 2009 A grovelling, brown nosing piece on 'The Hero/Villain' in today's Thunderer: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/col...icle6930529.ece This paragraph caused an involuntary projection of oral contents (coffee) onto my PC: Given Beckham’s consistent repudiation of adversity, we may ask why the attacks on his character continue to be so shrill. To say that he does not merit a place in Capello’s line-up is one thing, but to dismiss one of the greatest England players as little more than a PR creation is curious in the extreme. Can anyone really think that a man as hard-nosed as Capello might be duped into picking Beckham because of the Machiavellianism of Simon Fuller? No Mr Syed, Capello is duped into de/selecting DB because of the Machiavellianism of Rupert Murdoch but you can't/won't say that because he's your effing boss.
leicesterfox86 Posted 25 November 2009 Posted 25 November 2009 I do find it strange that he decided to hide the condition. Especially as Paul Scholes suffered from it as well. It's not exactly a big deal is it? As this football blog looking at Serie A betting and what the future holds for Beckham describes - there are plenty of other sportsman who suffer with the condition. One I was very suprised about considered her sport / event!!
Fosse Boy Posted 25 November 2009 Posted 25 November 2009 Pretty much echo what daviG said. Beckham's not totally undeserving of recognition, I'd struggle to think of another player who's been as good a servant to England over the last decade as he has, but if he were to get it then it'd be something of a watered down achievement and would be blown out of all proportion by the media. Besides, Shilton's a Leicester lad. It's something else for us to be proud of. :city:
Manwell Pablo Posted 25 November 2009 Posted 25 November 2009 First of all, as someone with asthma who likes to play sport, it is quite hard to hide. The fact that he has gone to the trouble of hiding it for so long, and is only 'outed' after a sneaky picture does make it look like he's gone out of his way.Secondly, asthma is no big deal. It's not like he's got HIV and would be ridiculed even more because of it. Something like that I can see a player hiding. Asthma; nope. Thirdly, as I've posted above, Scholes has used his position to increase awareness, along with other sports stars. Asthma is a condition that is misunderstood, and there is evidence that concerned parents don't allow their kids to do PE, and thus starts a spiralling decline into other health problems. Scholes, Paula Radcliffe, Iwan Thomas and Austin Healey all spring to mind, as they have the same type of asthma as me, "Exercise Induced Asthma", and this is the worst one for worried parents or excuse makers. Exercise and sport actually helps to manage the condition, and increase lung capacity and efficiency, which is they have all been involved in campaigns encouraging people to exercise and not hide behind asthma. Having a name like Becks in on the act would go further to stopping a growing problem. He must have known this, what with playing and training alongside Scholes for so long. I'm the only one who thinks he should be able to do what he wants (for once) then He doesn't owe the world anything, he's done plenty for charity in his time, if he wants to deal with having astehma in his own way fair play.

I couldnt of put it better myself Lisa. I have Asthma yes it a f**ker but if you keep on top of it take your inhalers(Preventor which is the purple or brown one then salbutamol which is the blue one) morning and night your on top of it. I'm actually suprised there arent any asthma adverts on tv.
hairy Posted 25 November 2009 Posted 25 November 2009 Lisa would I be correct in assuming living in LA with all its pollution would not help Beckham and may have made it worse? Or is that a myth too?

Or is that a myth too?I doubt Lord and Lady Becs live anywhere near any pollution. This. It depends as different people have different triggers. Pollution is one of mine. The most concerning thing is going to be playing at altitude, which I believe some of the SA grounds are. I know that my breathing goes to pot at relatively low heights (I struggled walking up Ben Nevis, for example). But I think that you can acclimatise yourself to it.
Shrenchel Posted 25 November 2009 Posted 25 November 2009 Who hasn't?! Ian Wright doing 20 fags a day and still be fcking magic is far more impressive.

Take a look at other players: Lampard has scored 21 in 76 and Gerrard 16 in 76 games. Rating David Beckham better than Shilton is out of this world. He isn't a "national Hero" either.
