The Doctor Posted 5 December 2009 Posted 5 December 2009 I know.I just used him as an example. Drogba has pace and power etc and then I finished with Rob Hulse. Because, who else can we buy? Marcus Tudgay? anyone. Depends how they feel at their curent club and how much NP is willing to spend/ MM willing to make available.
Pst Posted 6 December 2009 Posted 6 December 2009 We need to sign Barry Hayles on loan in January. I fully believe he will single handedly get us promoted.
Radovan's Caravan Posted 6 December 2009 Posted 6 December 2009 Earnshaw was clearly the difference today - a small, light, pacey forward with lightning reactions and good technique (a poor man's Deoe if you will). You were consistently caught pushing up and playing a high line ('The English Disease') -a suicidal tactic against strong opposition away from home. But every cloud has a silver lining. Statistics clearly show that sides that experience a heavy defeat are more likely to be victorious in their next game particularly if it is a home fixture that takes place shortly after the defeat. I wouldn't want to be a Robins' fan right now...
Lillehamring Posted 6 December 2009 Posted 6 December 2009 can this thread be closed or merged with the exact same one that he started last week.... the forum will fall apart if people are able to start their own personal post match thread every week.
harpendenfox Posted 7 December 2009 Posted 7 December 2009 My assessment is thus. Against the best in our league, ie West Brom and Newcastle, and against decent teams putting on one of their best performances, ie Forest and Preston, we struggle. Against most of the division we are more than capable of holding our own. We are perhaps a mid to mid-high table team at the moment, but have been more consistent than most, hence our position in fourth. I'd look for just one player in the window, an attack minded midfielder to play in front of Wellens or King. In Fryatt, Waghorn, Gallagher and Campbell we have four strikers who should be able to score us enough goals in this league, but none of them would succeed in the Prem. We should also play with at least one winger, genuine winger, in every game, be that Gradel, N'Guessen, Adams or Dyer. Our lack of a reserve team means none of them, Max excepted, has had enough match time, which makes it hard for them to impress at the moment. Time to make a decision and play one of them for five games. I think Steve and Matt, honest pros that they are, have lost that half a yard they once hard, and that Nige, loyal and good man that he is, needs to bite the bullet with them both, which I suspect he will find very hard. They should go with our sincere thanks for their role in our bounce back last term. I'm not worried about the defence at this level. Wasting cash on a replacement for Neilson, for example, would be akin to rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic. But our lack of pace means in the Prem that defence would be murdered week in, week out. I don't think we'll get promoted this season. Neither do I want us to be promoted. I want us to invest in a quality attack minded midfielder in January, then one pacy right-back or centre back in the summer. Possibly a new striker too, depending on whether Waggers stays beyond the season - unlikely perhaps, and the DJ situation. I don't like the bloke, but he is a proven Championship goal scorer, so why bother buying another one? Gallagher is too for that matter, and Yanni could be given the chance.

Only thing I would add is that if we expect to continue in the top half, looking for a playoff spot we really need to sort out our tactics and setup. Since we switched from playing 4-4-2 with two wingers we have been all over the place in midfield and attack, I doubt even a decent midfielder and striker would be of much help until we are much better organised. Errr....thats it, for once.......
stez Posted 7 December 2009 Posted 7 December 2009 losing 4-0 to forest..the sort of game a promotion aspiring team would win comfortably and without breaking stride.giving up a win in an away game to s****horpe when they should have been 4, maybe 5 goals up. robbie savage was right. this team is at best, mediocre compared to the rest of the division, very much a ' me too' member of this divison and should really consider the season a phenomenal success if they avoid relegation...a much more realistic ambition. The jammy luck we have enjoyed has finally run out, and to make it worse, we have been found out... tony cottee was also right..there's only so long this team can punch above it's weight before the steam and sheer jammy good luck runs out and now there are no more last second jammy goals or acrobatic saves from our keeper to keep up the 'winning' momentum. once again, we flatter to decieve. we will always be a second tier team and there is now a real danger of not being good enough for the championship and too good for divsion 3. sound familiar, anyone? 5-1? anyway, i don't know how many games you saw under levien, kelly, allen, megson (ish) or hollyway, but we are playing far better now than then. we were a championship/league 1 club then. we certainly aren't now. (most) teams are trying to stop us now, instead of the other way round as in the recent past.

Why do you include Allen in the 2-2 draw at Palace and 4-1 win over Watford we played as well as any time in the last 5 years and in his other game in charge a 1-0 defeat with Blackpool we were just unlucky and to compare those games with the performance at Forest is idiotic
