Matty Fryatt, the enigma

Recommended Posts

Matty Fryatt is quite an unusual footballer, I reckon.

Tonight, when he came on, the team seemed to click into shape and look dangerous (long before he got the consolation goal)...admittedly Bristol City had their foot off the gas by then.

In some other matches, whether or not he scores, he contributes enormously to the team, running out wide, linking with the midfield, working really hard...

Then, in other matches, he seems almost immobile and disinterested! Like at Forest, when his removal after 30mins was quite justified...as was his position on the bench tonight!

On Saturday, I was sneaked into the Forest end by a Forest-supporting mate ("regrets, I've had a few, but then again..."!!) and he was asking about Fryatt. I was trying to explain to him how Fryatt doesn't have exceptional pace and doesn't score many tap-ins. He creates a large proportion of his chances (missed or taken) by clever movement and good technique. My (generally clueless) Forest mate was impressed by this and commented that if he could manage the tap-ins or the pace, he'd be a top Premier league striker...and there's some truth in that.

I do wonder about Fryatt's personality. When I've heard him speak he sounds like a really nice bloke, fairly intelligent, relaxed, quite easygoing...which may be the problem!

I mean, I know there are some strikers who contribute little to a team but are exceptional finishers (Linkeker comes to mind!), but Fryatt isn't like that. Sometimes he works phenomenally hard for the team, other times he seems like he wants to lay a towel out on the beach!

My provisional judgement (for what it's worth to people who don't know me and are probably asleep!): the bloke is a gem and should be kept here, nurtured, disciplined and subject to rigorous management (personal attention of Mr. Nigel!).

Matty Fryatt has been our most consistent player this year. It came as no surprise that he improved the team when he came on. Oakley immediately played better and more forward than in the entire night.

Unfortunately strikers have patches without goals that doesn't mean that they are not in the right place and challenging for everything.

I agree that Matty is intelligent but then wasn't Linaker too. He must be kept and it would be great to get another striker in the window to play along side him. This may be our only real problem. If you don't score goals you put pressure on yourselves.

Matty Fryatt deserves to be in the team and it would not be out of place if he was the captain of the team.

I agree. We don't create that much as a team (do we have a creative midfield player?!) which is why Fryatt justifies his place in the team. He has the nouse to get in the positions and get chances. Yes he misses a few (too many some times!) but 2 missed chances and 1 goal is better than no chances at all.

Hopefully getting dropped for Brostol and his response coming on will give him a bit of a kick up the backside, he is not untouchable and still has to fight for his place.

I hope to see Fryatt back to his best against Wednesday.

Yeah he looked brilliant before he signed his new contract and then didnt do much after.

Saturday he looked totally uninterested and then all of a sudden, hes dropped and comes on against Bristol and starts playing well again!

Im convinced its a case of when he can be bothered now to be honest.

Well, he should start on Saturday, after scoring and Waghorn unavailable.

Pearson was quite right to sub him at Forest, hopefully being dropped will bring some motivation to keep his place in the side.

Agree with this one. Not least because the alternatives simply don't bear thinking about.

Hopefully he'll be well up for this one if he starts and prove he deserves to be a shoe-in to start again.

He was injured. Missed a few games before Xmas, signs a new deal, carried on playing and then had a hernia op in the Summer. He mentions it on some random video clip on youtube at a trialist day at R&D.

Clearly not. I'd say its almost the opposite.

One game he looks like a Premiership class forward, then another game he's just, well...shit. On his game a very good player, but definitely not our most consistent player.

I'd put that down to our midfield to be honest.

Against QPR we were awesome, every single ball along the floor to feet. Quick, confident passing.

Long hoofs do not work.

fryatt is good no doubt and does create lots of chances and people says he misses alot of them but at the end of the day if he converted all those chances he would be in the premiership.

People need to remember that fryatt pretty much got us promoted last season single handed with all his goals, then people doubted his ability to score again in the championship and he has 10 goals already in the league! what do you guys want from him, your happy when he is scoring! then slating him the next for not converting his chances! for a team where we haven`t exactly got quality wingers, could u question that fryatt could get better service undoubtly. But who am i to talk, you don`t stand by ur top goalscorer do you! fook it better still sell him in january and who are we gonna get in return have any of u thought about that? Problem in our team is our midfield is average, shown against the better quality teams.

Sorry but thats not true at all, I think theres a few players at City that would disagree with you too! It was very much a team effort plus the coaching staff.

Fact without fryatt last season we would still be in league one, so It is true! And besides I never said pearson and our coaching staff didnt do a good job, but im talking about playing staff here.

Fryatt will always be a 'hit and miss' striker in the Championship. He isn't capable of performing at a higher level and never will be. Two reasons...

1) lack of pace

2) one touch too many

I could list more, being greedy, disinterested etc etc but it's been covered before.

1) Isn't every striker hit and miss?

2) Aren't most strikers greedy?

3) Although his pace is not electric he does seem to have got quicker in the last couple of years and is still young and

developing.

4) He is still young and developing.

5) It is difficult to question if a player has had too many touches or not enough touches, it depends on the end result and

whether that would have been different had he done the opposite.

6) He was our top scorer last season.

7) He is our top scorer this season.

8) He is one of the top scorers in this division.

9) Last season albeit in div1 he broke some long standing records.

10) He is not the finished article but refer back to point 4.

I could list more, but I'm going to get a pizza.

prove it! Without him the goals would have come from elsewhere. Perhaps howard would have got more or dickov/campbell/hayles/chambers would have started more often and been banging them in for fun.

Situations like this are never set in stone so this comment has no basis.

I like it! Bravo to you sir!

He's the best striker we've had in years and still people moan.

Keep it up Matty :scarf:

I think the key to Fryatts performances is his confidence level. I think he is a very unconfident person and needs a good managing to get the best out of him. When he feels confident in his own ability he plays well, when he needs to prove himself (for example when he gets dropped) he comes out of his shell and plays well. I think Pearson knows this and is good at getting him to believe in himself, the only problem is having to do it every game is a bit of ball ache for Nigel I'm sure. I bet Fryatt is quite a high maintenance player in that respect. I just wish Fryatt would realise he is a quality player, I think the best one we've got, I wish he would play with his chin up every game!

Yes, agree with all you say. LCFC living in King's Lynn - supported them all my life, as has my father who is in his 80s. Nice to know that there are some people in Lynn who aren't Norwich fans! The only thing Norwich are useful for is hosting LCFC when they're in the same division! Don't get to see them too often - but enjoyed going to Coventry, and especially Watford (3-3) in September.

Ur post is a joke, Fryatt scored the goals to put us in the championship and none of the players you have mentioned could or would have scored the goals if put in his place! campbell shouldnt be a leicester still anyway hardly got a great record infact it`s awful and still people rate him, hayles I won`t even waste my time talking about him! chambers is too young and still developing and dickov lol, well he needs a walking stick let alone play football.

and as i said the goals would have come from elsewhere.

Who's to say that the players i've mentioned couldn't have got those goals.?

Campbell can be a great striker on his day while dickov (blackpool loan spell) and hayles (while at plymouth) were banging them in the season before IN A HIGHER LEVEL.

There is no way of telling what would have happened if we didn't have fryatt.

He's a good goal scorer but that comes from starting regularly and so gelling with the rest of the starting line up. If campbell, dickov, hayles, chambers etc. had gotten a full season in his place last year, they could be the one the team seems to depend upon for goals.
