lou Posted 21 September 2009 Author Posted 21 September 2009 Im definately going to go and sit in one when I get some time off..... think its fascinating stuff. Im desperate to do jury service but guarantee I'll never get called up
Raj Posted 21 September 2009 Posted 21 September 2009 Unless he gets Steven Gerrard's lawyer. The trial is set for the week after we play West Brom. Not great timing..
davieG Posted 21 September 2009 Posted 21 September 2009 I sat in on a murder trial at the Old Bailey, 4 lads accused of killing someone with a baseball bat. They were denying it even though the blooded baseball bat was found in the boot of their car 15 minutes after the murder happened. It took ages because they kept saying they couldn't speak English - not that they or their barrister had asked for an interpreter.
Smudge Posted 21 September 2009 Posted 21 September 2009 Im definately going to go and sit in one when I get some time off..... think its fascinating stuff. Im desperate to do jury service but guarantee I'll never get called up Don't forget to take a bag of crisps and a crispy apple to eat.
AmericanScott Posted 21 September 2009 Posted 21 September 2009 This.If you ask the court staff, they can tell you which courts are having trials, and which are ordinary run of the mill hearings. Having said that, sentencing is interesting; listening to the excuses that these people come up with would give some on here a burst blood vessel!! If I knew who you were, I would offer to come along to the court with you, but firstly, that's a bit weird, and secondly, I don't think Sir F would approve! Indeed it would certainly be a strange outting! But thanks for letting me know that this is possible. I'll look into it further and see who i can get to come along.
Sir Fynwy Posted 13 November 2009 Posted 13 November 2009 He's been bailed to apear at the crown court on 18th February, pleading not guilty. If he can't convince a jury he is innocent he might be out of football for a while.
Guest Posted 13 November 2009 Posted 13 November 2009 This has really pissed me off. I wasn't due into uni until yesterday afternoon, so thought I'd pop down to the court and see what was going on. The court lists had no mention of Mr Mattock, the security staff hadn't a clue what was going on. The press were out in force (well, for Leicester), but it looks like it was all done on the quiet. So much for justice being seen to be done.....
Raj Posted 13 November 2009 Posted 13 November 2009 He's got the same bent solicitors** as a certain Liverpool capt has he not???? ** ALLEGEDLY!!!
davieG Posted 13 November 2009 Posted 13 November 2009 Will this be Leicester Crown Court and will their be an opportunity for his defence to fill the jury with 'mates' from the Monsall.
lou Posted 13 November 2009 Author Posted 13 November 2009 Hes going to get not guilty whether hes guilty or not. OR if he does get guilty he'll get some soft sentence
Unit Posted 13 November 2009 Posted 13 November 2009 The system's fooked, a mate of mine got 8 months for stealing a burger a few weeks ago, he's out on bail now but you can guarantee mattock will get off with nothing.
Tommy G Posted 13 November 2009 Posted 13 November 2009 The system's fooked, a mate of mine got 8 months for stealing a burger a few weeks ago, he's out on bail now but you can guarantee mattock will get off with nothing. I bet he did slightly more than steal a burger to go inside for 8 months. I'm sorry but thats utter bollocks mate

Christ! Did he steal it from the Queens bedroom while she was having a late night snack!?

That doesn't make sense. You are bailed before and during a trial. If it was a few weeks ago, surely your mate would be inside, and if your time estimates are wrong, and he's served his time, then he's out on parole/licence. And like Tommy G says, you would have to do more than just nick a burger to get 8 months. There is no way something like that would be heard outside the Mags unless there was more to it.
Unit Posted 13 November 2009 Posted 13 November 2009 ok, http://www.thisisleicestershire.co.uk/news...il/article.html he was in the metro and the prison newspaper too so didn't get any abuse inside as nobody thought he should be there. he got out last friday but is going to court again on monday i think with the lad who actually hit the guy

He didnt mention the fact that he had battered the person eatiing the burger at the time EDIT posted before I saw your response above. If youre with someone who mugs someone then youre guilty by association I believe.... Lisa would know more. Unless he'd tried to stop the attack which it appears he didnt.
Unit Posted 13 November 2009 Posted 13 November 2009 He didnt mention the fact that he had battered the person eatiing the burger at the time No, he didn't. The person he was with beat the burger guy up and got a caution. http://www.thisisleicestershire.co.uk/news...il/article.html
davieG Posted 13 November 2009 Posted 13 November 2009 No, he didn't. The person he was with beat the burger guy up and got a caution.http://www.thisisleicestershire.co.uk/news...il/article.html Well I'm sure the victim is well pleased he got sent down, what's mostly wrong with this case even more so after reading this was how the other guy wasn't prosecuted separately for assault the explanation is nonsense: Following the hearing, senior district crown prosecutor Lawrence English said that after studying CCTV footage in great detail, they decided not to involve Mr Smithers' friend in the case. He said: "We had to consider whether this was a joint operation or an independent assault on the student – our view was the latter. "Although it was completely unlawful and the man received a caution, we did not believe the assault was part of the robbery."

The person he was with beat the burger guy up and got a caution.http://www.thisisleicestershire.co.uk/news...il/article.html like I said I was posting at the same time as you were! Having read the article in full it sounded like a pretty nasty attack personally. I agree with what the judge said, doesnt matter what the article was that was taken its the fact they probably frightened the lad out of his wits and there was a "gang" of them. Smacks of bullying IMO, being drunk is no excuse, most 18 year old lads get drunk quite regularly and dont go around robbing people. Only thing I dont agree with is the other one not getting taken to court.

Yeah i agree, i'm not defending him at all but what he got was really harsh considering the guy that actually hit him only got a caution. You hear of people doing much worse and getting much less.
BoneDog Posted 13 November 2009 Posted 13 November 2009 A mugger has been handed an eight-month detention sentence for snatching a student's beef burger and eating it. Do you know what kind of burger it was. It better of been at least a BK Whopper. I wouldn't risk 8 months for anything less!
lou Posted 13 November 2009 Author Posted 13 November 2009 Yeah i agree, i'm not defending him at all but what he got was really harsh considering the guy that actually hit him only got a caution. You hear of people doing much worse and getting much less. Well hopefully he'll have learnt from this and some good will come of it, hes young enough to turn it around still. Doesnt seem right the other guy got away with it? Are they still friends as a matter of interest?
Guest Posted 13 November 2009 Posted 13 November 2009 Right, so it wasn't theft, it was robbery. Well, there you go. The lowest starting point is 12 months custody, so he's got off pretty lightly, to be honest.

True, my brother got over a year once for having a little scuffle with a copper and on the same day in court there was this guy who had thrown his baby down the stairs breaking some bones and he only got about 12 months. I was shocked at that and couldn't work it out I think if my brother hadn't of squirted chilli sauce in the coppers eyes his sentence would of been a bit less though, but that doesn't excuse the light sentence for the baby basher.
