z-layrex Posted 22 February 2010 Posted 22 February 2010 Me and the gf usually go on holiday during the easter break, but this year she has way too much work to get done around then so we're just going to go away for a couple of nights somewhere in the UK. How's Bath culturally? We love museums, galleries, historical places etc when it's just the two of us. Any good hotel recommendations? Ta!
ozleicester Posted 22 February 2010 Posted 22 February 2010 We spent a day in Bath on our holiday over there last year. Was a beautiful place (though they were ripping up half the streets in town) and seemed to have enough to do.
hairy Posted 22 February 2010 Posted 22 February 2010 I am going this weekend. Got the afternoon booked in the spa. Ment to be fantastic Always wanted to go so I am looking forward to it.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 22 February 2010 Posted 22 February 2010 It's a World Heritage Site and definitely one of the prettiest towns in Britain. The Bath's are one of the best tourist sites I've ever visited in terms of presentation and user-friendliness. The Abbey is impressive too, as is Royal Crescent, the Circus and Pulteney Bridge, which last time I went had a Bath RFC shop on it which I stuck my head in and shouted "Tiiiiiiigeeeeeers!" (I was younger and more childish ). It remains the only place that I have had lunch in a cafe on a bridge. Wikipedia has Bath listed as a city... but I'm not sure, since it doesn't have a cathedral. Bath's cathedral is in nearby Wells (hence the title Bishop of Bath and Wells) which is England's smallest city (since it has a cathedral) and not much bigger than somewhere like Syston, maybe even smaller. If you get time, it's also worth a visit.
CosbehFox Posted 22 February 2010 Posted 22 February 2010 You don't need a cathedral to be a city. Ask Birmingham or Belfast.
DB11 Posted 22 February 2010 Posted 22 February 2010 You don't need a cathedral to be a city. Ask Birmingham or Belfast. Traditionally you did though
CosbehFox Posted 22 February 2010 Posted 22 February 2010 Traditionally you did though Agreed without sounding wanting to be pedantic though, at which point did Birmingham say it was a town.
Webbo Posted 22 February 2010 Posted 22 February 2010 You don't need a cathedral to be a city. Ask Birmingham or Belfast. There is a cathederal in Birmingham and Belfast.
DB11 Posted 22 February 2010 Posted 22 February 2010 Agreed without sounding wanting to be pedantic though, at which point did Birmingham say it was a town. I dunno I only went on Wikipedia to try and disprove your theory but it just said traditionally in ancient times cities were regarded as those places with cathedrals and where there was a seat for a Bishop to sit (or something like that, I've gone off it now) but now cities are defined as those with the capacity to house many people and have law regulations or some bollocks I didn't understand.
Head Honcho Posted 22 February 2010 Posted 22 February 2010 Bath is great but very pricey on the old digs front! If you are going in the summer there's a great campsite near Twerton Park with a bus stop nearby that gets you into town in about 10 minutes. You won't need more than a day to explore Bath itself though.

hairy Posted 23 February 2010 Posted 23 February 2010 I think the new shopping centre is almost finished now. I read it opened in November 2009 with the next two phases later this year
Flynny Posted 23 February 2010 Posted 23 February 2010 I've heard it's great to look at but expensive, know a few people from there, some family have been but never been myself so I don't even know why I'm typing oh well this is a really long sentence now.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 23 February 2010 Posted 23 February 2010 I'm told I should visit Bath more often And Coventry
CosbehFox Posted 23 February 2010 Posted 23 February 2010 There is a cathederal in Birminghamand Belfast. Lying barstools at work, we had this debate and some Brummie said no cathedral there! Yeh, it some special selection panel or something. Preston was the last one I think. Swansea for example went from town to city about 40 years ago, hence the footballing team's name change.
