lcfcadam Posted 8 April 2010 Posted 8 April 2010 Massive, massive shame. Guy was a nutter but a genius.
jonthefox Posted 8 April 2010 Posted 8 April 2010 nooooooooooo future, nooooooooooooooo future for him. jokes aside, very sad day.
lou Posted 9 April 2010 Posted 9 April 2010 I have mixed views on him as a person but his influence was pretty massive and I dont like to hear of anyone dying to Cancer.
Daggers Posted 9 April 2010 Posted 9 April 2010 Always thought he was a total cunt. He didn't create punk, it created itself - him and Shitbollocks the designer made bondage trousers. They made fashion, they didn't create the mindset which lay behind some outstanding music. They were panto. That said, cancer's not nice for anyone and I feel for him and the family who had to endure it with him.

Of course he was "a total cunt", and to me it would seem he was actually the antithesis of punk (exploiting the cultural movement as a commercial object). However, the mainstream concept of punk as it's remembered now (I'm talking New York Dolls, Sex Pistols etc) would unlikely have existed were it not for him, or certainly not in the same memorable way, and therefore he probably did create 'punk' - not the anarchic mindset, but the image everyone remembers. Without him, it probably would have stayed a mostly underground movement and never had anything like as big an impact. Well that's how I see it anyway.

Ok youve said pretty much what I think He exploited what was already happening in a very clever way... he didnt create Punk though... no way
Daggers Posted 9 April 2010 Posted 9 April 2010 Ok youve said pretty much what I think He exploited what was already happening in a very clever way... he didnt create Punk though... no way Something happened, he sold some trousers, things continued in different directions. Hooray for the great trouser seller. Hooray for the man who rented a boat. Seriously, the sheer volume of people eulogising the twat on the radio today is frightening. Everyone hated punk and everyone, including punks, hated Mclaren. This Cult of the Dead, where everybody has to be seen saying nice things in public is bollocks. Elvis had more to do with the advent of punk than him. Elvis, The Moody Blues and Dave Lee fuckingTravis.

An absolute, hands-down, stonewall classic. Of course even with that he was a bit of a willy puller, not giving any mention to the musicians who probably did most of the work, but you cannot argue with the album itself...

Funnily enough Adam, no. But on your recommendation I'll try to seek it out on Isohunt for a quick listen in the park.

Some tracks are perhaps a bit on the weird side to just sit down and listen to, but it did pretty much introduce hip-hop to these shores (a fair achievement I'd have thought).

Have to say that sums up my thoughts as well, he found a niche in the market and exploited it to the fullest for his own gain, kind of like Simon Cowell didn't invent shite pop music but instead found a niche and exploited it for himself in terms of fame and money.
Webbo Posted 10 April 2010 Posted 10 April 2010 To me, Jade Goody WAS punk rock. Everything else, a mere sideshow Just as I was getting over her death, you have to mention her name again.

He was a brilliant publicist without whom the sex pistols would have probably just been 'another band', the fact we still talk about them now and the band still influence many new bands is a credit to Mclaren. Elvis had more to do with the advent of punk....thats funny, and a load of rubbish too of course.
ozleicester Posted 11 April 2010 Posted 11 April 2010 If he had some flares... the music world wouldve been entirley different
Daggers Posted 11 April 2010 Posted 11 April 2010 He was a brilliant publicist without whom the sex pistols would have probably just been 'another band', ...and? So? Punk was a movement which existed before, during and after The Pistols. The Clash and The Damned formed at the same time, sold more records, influenced more bands and were more musically creative. The Pistols were just another band to most people. the band still influence many new bands is a credit to Mclaren. Crap. Elvis had more to do with the advent of punk....thats funny, and a load of rubbish too of course.
purpleronnie Posted 11 April 2010 Posted 11 April 2010 He was a brilliant publicist without whom the sex pistols would have probably just been 'another band'...and? So? So? So thats it, never claimed he was anything more, most bands need a manger who does what he can to publicize the band, mclaren was brillaint at just that. Punk was a movement which existed before, during and after The Pistols. The Clash and The Damned formed at the same time, sold more records, influenced more bands and were more musically creative. The Pistols were just another band to most people. Yes it did but the sex pistols made it world wide news and thus influenced many bands. Just ask the manic street preachers and the libertines. the band still influence many new bands is a credit to MclarenCrap. See above point, dismiss it as much as you like, he helped bring 'punk' to the masses, fact! Oh and similar lettering on an album cover, brilliant.
