davieG Posted 12 May 2010 Posted 12 May 2010 It's a bit unfair though on those in the bushes- they'll have to work that bit harder I don't know - wow look at the eyes on her! Eyes can be very stimulating don't you think.
sw_fox Posted 12 May 2010 Posted 12 May 2010 I saw a great cartoon in Private Eye yesterday, where there was two Muslim men standing in front of a news board saying 'France to ban the full face Veil', and the men are saying 'Its ok I never let her out anyway'. A warning as to what could happen with banning full face coverings, whether women chose not to leave the house because of this draconian law through their own free will or co-ercion, the losers will be Muslim women.
Daggers Posted 12 May 2010 Posted 12 May 2010 With all the gushing concern for women in all of this, it makes me wonder how they managed to go without the vote for so long.
Koke Posted 13 May 2010 Posted 13 May 2010 If anything should be banned it should be those baggy jeans worn by the youngsters. Seeing a bunch of lads with hairy arses offends me deeply.

davieG Posted 20 July 2010 Posted 20 July 2010 From the BBC Syria bans face veils at universities Wearing the full veil has caused controversy in Europe and the Middle EastFemale students wearing a full face veil will be barred from Syrian university campuses, the country's minister of higher education has said. Ghiyath Barakat was reported to have said that the practice ran counter to the academic values and traditions of Syrian universities. His ruling, published on the All4Syria website, was said to be in response to requests from students and parents. The issue of full face veils has caused controversy in other countries. "We have never gone to the extreme left or the extreme right," she told Al-Arabiya TV. Secular identityHowever the BBC's Lina Sinjab in Damascus says the ruling could be a sign that Syrian Society is becoming more conservative. "In recent years, Syria has witnessed an Islamic revival with more and more women wearing the Hijab," she reports. "This decision could be seen as a step by the government to enforce its secular identity." In 2009, Egypt's then foremost Muslim cleric, Sheikh Mohammed Sayed Tantawi, barred female students from wearing the full-face veil at the al-Azhar University, Sunni Islam's centre of learning and scholarship. He also upset other Muslim scholars by saying French Muslims should obey any law that France might enact banning the veil. Earlier this month, France's lower house of parliament overwhelmingly approved a bill that would ban wearing the Islamic full veil in public. It must be ratified by the Senate in September to become law. Belgium's lower house of parliament has also passed a bill to ban clothing that hides a person's identity in public places, although it does not specifically refer to full-face Islamic veils
Mr B Posted 20 July 2010 Posted 20 July 2010 It's about time we got a vote on this. Not out of racism, but if i can't see the person at all, how do i know who they are? I like to know whose walking down the street with me. This is Europe, surly they should respect our way of living, if we moved to Islamic countries, would we be able to walk around in just shorts like we do here? No. It's not about freedom of choice, it's about respecting other cultures, we are expected to respect theirs (fair enough), but a large amount of them don't respect ours (and i'm not saying all as i know a lot who do).

Personally I can't see how covering your face is disrespecting our culture. I wouldn't say having an uncovered face is a huge part of our culture. You might feel threatened by it, but to try and pass that off as a cultural slur is just an excuse. I can understand certain situations where seeing someone's face is important, but walking down the street isn't one of them.
Stevosevic Posted 20 July 2010 Posted 20 July 2010 It's always going to be a sensitive and interesting debate. But i ask myself, can i walk into a shop/around town with a hood up and bandana to cover my face without being pulled up by a policeman? Probably not as it looks suspicious and can make the people around me feel uncomfortable not being able to see my face. Is this any different? I don't know,

Alexikokopops Posted 20 July 2010 Posted 20 July 2010 do you really think so ? i'd have to say that in most cultures, i believe that showing one's face is pretty much an unwritten law. Maybe it's just me. Going around with your face uncovered strikes me just as what most people tend to do, but it's never struck me as something to get in a fuss about if someone walks around with their face covered up. If someone's wearing a scarf around their face then I don't sit there and think "ooh my, I don't like that, that's going against my culture". I just don't care, just like I don't care if someone walks around in a top hat and shorts or someone wears sandals and socks.
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 20 July 2010 Posted 20 July 2010 Don't like them, and I believe they should be banned. I like to see who I am speaking to. Totally non British, and demeaning to those who are forced to wear them, as is often the case.

Torn on the issue of the burka - on one side it completely desexualises the wearer giving them a freedom that very few women in the western world have ever felt and on the other it being the tool of patriarchal oppression and reinforcing the notion of women as being only subservient to men.

It might not be to you, but i know for a fact a lot of people i know feel uncomfortable if they can't see a person, how do you know who's under there? And i personally hate not seeing the person next to me, especially in banks etc.
