iBleedLeicesterColours Posted 10 June 2010 Author Posted 10 June 2010 Yes I have.. I'd call it the twin partnership of Nathan Blake and Mark De Vries. Did they play a game together ? I'd like to knbow what is statistically the worst partnership
Wycombe Fox Posted 10 June 2010 Posted 10 June 2010 Akinbiyi and benjamin I have to agree with the above. The following are extracts from match reports from the 2001/2002 season for only 4 games during an 11-game run in which we only scored 3 goals. Why is it that when I remember the incidents I have the Benny Hill theme tune going round in my head? Trevor Benjamin came on for Dean Sturridge after 68 minutes and almost made an immediate impact when he turned Ugo Ehiogu just outside the box. However, his right-foot shot sailed harmlessly over the bar.Robbie Savage's fine cross found Akinbiyi in the box but he headed down tamely and the ball went over the bar. Indeed, if Ade Akinbiyi had managed to put away one of the three good chances he had in the match, the scoreline could have had a totally different complexion.Akinbiyi had a good chance to reduce the arrears after 17 minutes when Dean Sturridge's feint left him in the clear. However, the striker curled his shot wide of the target. Akinbiyi missed another opportunity when Hyppia inadvertently headed the ball into his path. However, he miscued his shot and the chance went begging. Akinbiyi missed his third chance of the game on the hour when Benjamin flicked the ball on - but he skied his effort from six yards. Benjamin's flick found Akinbiyi but he headed over the bar. In first half injury time Akinbiyi found himself one-on-one with Brad Friedel but could only shoot at the goalkeeper's legs. The ball then rebounded onto Akinbiyi's midriff and rolled out for a goal-kick.Akinbiyi scared the life out of Rovers defender Nils-Eric Johansson in the second half and had three good chances to score but dragged his shots wide. The hard-working Trevor Benjamin hustled defender Stanislav Varga into a mistake which left the big striker in the clear with just the keeper to beat. However, Benjamin lost control of the ball and 'keeper Thomas Sorensen recovered to smother the ball. The ball then squirmed back to Benjamin who dragged his shot wide.Ade Akinbiyi had his first chance after 20 minutes when he chested down a Muzzy Izzet cross in the penalty box and manoeuvred himself into a scoring position. However, he shot straight at Sorensen. ...wonderful searching cross after 18 minutes which found Benjamin unmarked in the area. However, the big striker's touch let him down and the chance was gone. ...after 35 minutes Ade Akinbiyi had a great chance for an equaliser when James Beattie inadvertently headed the ball into his path. Akinbiyi was only six yards from goal but could not latch onto the ball and the chance went begging.Akinbiyi had another opportunity five minutes later when Alan Rogers found him in the box but he dragged his shot wide. And then in first half injury time a Scowcroft flick-on found Akinbiyi but his poked shot was turned round for a corner by Jones. Oh such happy days!
lildave3 Posted 10 June 2010 Posted 10 June 2010 Seeing Cort and De Vries line up as the wide men in a front three will haunt me forever.
grth2004 Posted 10 June 2010 Posted 10 June 2010 Phil Gee and Ian Ormondroyd , although ormondroyd was my all time cult hero for looking so bad because of his massive long legs
Mee Posted 10 June 2010 Posted 10 June 2010 Seeing Cort and De Vries line up as the wide men in a front three will haunt me forever. Agreed. I about died i think.
Houdini Logic Posted 10 June 2010 Posted 10 June 2010 Lookin at this the other day, How bad was this partnership ?! .. Hayles, Hammond, Dj, Carl Cort.. No wonder we went down !! Anybody seen any worse ? You forgot Horsfield with that lot...
iBleedLeicesterColours Posted 10 June 2010 Author Posted 10 June 2010 You forgot Horsfield with that lot... Well yeah good point ! And De Vries was missing from my original list, all at the club around the same time. De Vries and Horsfield with the original lot are the worst surely ?!
Chairman of the Bored Posted 15 June 2010 Posted 15 June 2010 Any forward line that included Roger Davies had me marching for the exit!
Bettsj2 Posted 15 June 2010 Posted 15 June 2010 Any forward line that included Roger Davies had me marching for the exit! David Oldfield and Phil Gee were a Mark McGhee pairing. Bloody awful but not as bad as the Benj and Ak attack.
Sooper Steve's shin Posted 15 June 2010 Posted 15 June 2010 I second (third? fourth?) the vote for Big Trev and Ade - they were comically bad. Worth a mention in the "it shouldn't work but it did" category was the three-pronged strike-force in our play-off final win v Derby of Steve Walsh, Iwan Roberts and Ian Ormondroyd. Surely the tallest combined front three ever to grace the Wembley turf (or any other patch of grass!).
teblin Posted 15 June 2010 Posted 15 June 2010 BEst time i saw Benj and Ade up front was at old trafford amazing stuff.
Far Post Gerry Posted 15 June 2010 Posted 15 June 2010 Tricky Trev and Ade - away at Ipswich (can't remember the year, but it was winter) - could even put the ball in the net during the warm up. They were getting cheered by the Tractor fans every time they skied one into the stands. Doesn't get much more embarrassing than that...
Corky Posted 15 June 2010 Posted 15 June 2010 Akinbiyi was let down by the transfer fee, if it had been £500k then the misses wouldn't have been so costly.
Guest Basildon Fox Posted 15 June 2010 Posted 15 June 2010 David Oldfield and Phil Gee were a Mark McGhee pairing. Bloody awful but not as bad as the Benj and Ak attack. No they were not. They were a Brian Little pairing and if I remember rightly Little used Oldfield more in a midfield role than upfront.
Far Post Gerry Posted 15 June 2010 Posted 15 June 2010 Maybe, he def seemed to feel the pressure of the price tag. Trev was just shit, but everyone knew he was shit, and we kinda loved him for it. But Ade had no excuse - he was supposed to be good!

But Ade had no excuse - he was supposed to be good! Ade was clearly a dud at prem level and so not up to it, but the procession of strike partners (in those matches he wasn't left to forage on his own) - Collymore, Cottee, Eadie, Gunnlaugsson, Benjamin, Cresswell - all poor players or past it or crocked or uninterested - set the trend. By the time he got something like a settled partner (Dean Sturridge) the rot had set throughout the team. Always gave 100% however bad that was ... and we did get £2+m from Palace for him, so for me not as big a waste of money as the crock twins Eadie and Jones.
Bettsj2 Posted 15 June 2010 Posted 15 June 2010 No they were not. They were a Brian Little pairing and if I remember rightly Little used Oldfield more in a midfield role than upfront. Little never played those two up front. McGhee did in his first ever match in charge at home to Blackburn which finished 1-1.

The Eadie signing I think was O'Neil's biggest failure at City. £3m!! The signing of Jones pretty much summed up everything that was wrong with the Peter Taylor era. Just because a player is young, doesnt mean they'll be any good!

In what way was he poor.
haraven Posted 15 June 2010 Posted 15 June 2010 Arnar Gunnlaugsson running in the wrong direction not matter if we were attacking or defending - he was going to other way. Team him up with Ade and his muscles you got a perfect non-lethal duo we should send to North Korea for peace negotiations...
