The only issue I see with this is if he is on the speculated £20,000/week then I can't see any deal we are offering to be at this level.

Therefore I can see him rejecting any offer and either getting a move this summer, or leaving on a free which would result in clubs willing to offer him a better wage due to no fee.

He wont get that at Blackpool either, they'll probably offer him a 3 year contract on less money but with a one off signing on fee to compensate for any losses for this year and it will be subject to staying in the PL reducing if they get relegated.

£24k he's on, right? He'd probably want an increase on top of that and 3 more years. Not particularly a great fan of that idea.

I wouldn't offer him that myself and I am a fan of him. I just wouldn't dismiss it if the rumours about the takeover being nearly completed are true.

i thought he was on 17k a week but what do I know!?

As much as anyone else, can't imagine how anyone outside of him and maybe 10 other people including, his agent, the taxman, bank manger, Mandaric, and Hoos would know for sure.

Surely that cannot possibly be right?

£1.25m a year basic wage? I know he's well paid but that must be an exageration

Sound's like his agent is trying to get more money from Blackpool for him. Can't blame him, if true, but this whole affair is getting boring now. Make your mind up Deej!

If the takeover is all but sealed then we could.

The other option is that he is offered the same wages or a modest increase now with considerable bonuses and/or a pay rise if we are promoted

Offering the guy a new deal on the back of 5 pre season games and a few goals is a huge gamble especially on his wages, surely over £20k a week and I'd guess a new deal would be 2 extra years. However I still think we're in a win-win with him here, either a decent sum we couldn't have dreamed of recieving a month ago or a striker who could if happy and used correctly as he was at Blackpool and it seems he has been in pre-season could hit 20 goals in the season coming. Just offering him a new deal after all the money he's takn us for in the past 3 years doesn't seem the right way to handle it.

Whatever happens I'll still like the guy for his decent company at the player of the year awards 2007/08 and that goal at Chelsea.

If he leaves it's obvious we'll need another bod up top in asap.

I might cry if we offer him a new deal, and they won't be happy tears

Mercury says Sousa's rejected a bid from Blackpool

The really interesting bit is the last line,

"Campbell has impressed Sousa with his fitness and attitude."

If this is true and not more 'code' for 'make us a better offer', then that is good news as long as he is impressing the rest of the squad as well. We have a fine team spirit and I do not want to see that damaged in any way.

I still believe Campbell has a hell of a long way to go before he even begins to impress me, but I am genuinely hoping that he does. As far as another contract is concerned I think that he has to show that he deserves it first, which he has barely started to do.

My low opinion of Campbell has been based on his poor attitude and lack of application during the Pearson years. Some say that he was never given a chance by Pearson but a good pro would have done enough to force his hand, that is my view anyway.

Under Sousa it looks like he is being offered the chance, interesting to see whether he has any interest in taking it...:dunno:

Just watched the Posh highlights reel - he looks quite happy to have scored and it seemed like the rest of the team genuinely were pleased for him too, unlike against Oxford where after he scored he looked as if someone had eaten his pet poodle

Knowing our luck we will give him a new contract then he'll have a bust up with Sousa or get badly injured.

More likely he'll just hit a patch of wank form again and everyone will start calling Sousa a shit bastard for turning down the million quid.

Probably.

As I said before, I hope this is sorted out soon so we can know for definite what is happening.

I totally agree. As he is out of contract at the end of the new season, the pressure on him will be to prove himself, both to us, or anybody else.

Maybe aswell if we are going to play with the ball along the ground a lot under Sousa it will benefit DJ a lot more. I'm not saying we didn't pass the ball under Pearson but it seems Sousa wants to play it along the floor whenever we possibly can.

His goal record in pre season has shown that so far.

His goal against Posh was a great passing move between him and Fryatt.
