  1. 1. What to do with Dj campbell Now?

So DJ leaving would leave us with Fryatt who hasn't scored in pre-season, Gallagher who is injured and Howard who is 34, splendid.

I seriously hope Mandaric has the balls and the belief in Sousa to reject this bid (if indeed it has been made). Sousa has said that DJ has committed to him and the team and it would be an absolute kick in the balls for Sousa if Mandy accepts and gets rid. It will be a huge dent in their relationship. Sousa obviously has DJ pencilled in as a key player this season and we won't ever in a million years get a player in to replace him anywhere near his calibre. Worrying few days ahead me thinks. People shouldn't underestimate the consequences if we decide to sell.

We paid £1.5m for Howard and that i'm pretty sure of. If we're offered that money for Dj, it's not a case of just accepting, we'd HAVE to accept it because of our financial state, added to the fact that Dj seemingly still wants out. If he does go, we'll probably gain back what we paid for him, and for all we know won't be missing out on anything because he's not really done anything for us has he? Also, he won't be able to score against for at least one season!

Plus he's out of contract in a year, plus we'd save a wedge in wages.

I think it's funny how 6 months ago people were willing to give him away for free and would have liked him hung from the nearest tree... Now it's the end of the world if he went.

But as fans we shouldn't be worried about saving wages and getting 500k in transfer fees. Its greedy chairmen who would be thinking like that (which I don't think Mandaric is). We should want to keep our best players to give ourselves the best chance this season.

I have always rated DJ (when fit- as we saw last season) and could never understand why Pearson didn't at least make use of him when he'd got himself fit. The situation has completely changed since 6 months ago with Sousa coming in, playing him as a first-choice striker/ attacking winger and declaring him as a key player in public. If Pearson was still in charge, I would want us to get rid because he wouldn't have been used.

It would be humiliating for Sousa if we cashed in now!

500k??? Have I missed something, how do you know that?

I'm sure you have if you say so, but you're in the minority on here.

I'm not pretending to know the fee involved but it was reported they had made a bid around that earlier in the summer. But either way, as fans we should want to keep our best players. And whether people agree or not, he is currently one of the best players we have in the squad and we should do all we can to keep him and not sell him to a team that will do well to get one win in the Premiership next season, he would barely touch the ball next season with their squad in its current state!

How things change...

Campbell has done fook all for us in two years, dissed the club and the manager and done nothing for his money, mostly not even bothering to make the effort.

Now he has scored a few goals in a handful of pre-season kickabouts and look fairly sharp I find myself asking, why?

Could it have something to do with a Premier League club sniffing around, maybe something to do with Premier league wages and the ego boost of being a Premier League footballer?

There are plenty on here, some who really should know better, who think that we should give him a (thirty) second chance and that somehow, if we do, he will play well, score goals and do his bit for the team.

I just can not begin to explain how delusional that is, for once words actually fail me, and as you know that does not happen often!

if Blackpool do make a serious offer take the money quick, before he gets the hump with something and reverts to type!

Do you really think Dj would be trying to impress a Premier League club by scoring a couple of goals in a few glorified training sessions against slovenian 2nd divsion teams?? Is that genuinely what you think? Do you also think that playing for the weakest team to be promoted to the Premiership for as long as I can remember is going to make him think he's the dog's bollocks??

And what do you mean by reverting to type? He was part of the worst Leicester season in history just like Howard, Oakley and King yet they have turned it around to have a couple of good seasons! He struggled with fitness before falling out with Pearson and being shipped out on loan to score goals for rival teams! I don't understand what you've got against him.

The facts are that DJ only became negative here is because Pearson didn't like him, call it a clash of personalities or whatever. But now we have a manager who trusts in him and wants him and funnily enough he's scoring goals! And to quote Sousa, he is happy playing for Leicester!

Just like to clarify I have backed him from the start, not like you bandwagoners.

Edmund and Bert are in the same boat as me.

I genuinely hope you're not referring to me!

Thing is, its these bandwagoners who think he's quality cos his pre-season scoring has been so good who are probably also the same people who hated him when he said he didn't want to come back here with Pearson in charge!

Just like to clarify, I still don't give a fcuk whether he stays or goes

All I got from that article was that Holloway had offered more money for playerS than he had before, not for DJ in particular. He could have offered just over million for DJ and then 3million for the other mystery player!!

But I will gladly be proven wrong. More money the better and the price would only have gone up with his performances in pre-season, showing he is still in form.

This is how I read it as well.

I think it's funny how 6 months ago people were willing to give him away for free and would have liked him hung from the nearest tree... Now it's the end of the world if he went.

It's the life of a fickle football fan.

So true, only a month or two ago I was branded an idiot for my support of DJ.

I don't think there's anything wrong if posters put their hands up and admit they were in the wrong but the haters have all quietly disappeared or jumped on the bandwagon :D

Can't really remember if I posted much on the subject of DJ (in case of being proved majorly wrong :D), but I've never really backed him since he's infamous 'anything but Leicester' speech. If he stays at City and does well for us this season then fair play I'll admit I was 'in the wrong' but I won't admit it simply because he's in great pre-season form when I haven't seen him play well for Leicester once since that Chelsea game.

For the record, I hope he stays and scores a shedload because we've got fvck all else up top.

I agree it'd be naive to suddenly start supporting a player because of one pre season but personally I always thought he had it in his locker when he was on loan scoring at Derby and during both stints at Blackpool.

I can understand why fans were aggrieved with his comments, afterall they pay his wages, but the circumstances at the time led to his dislike towards the club but admittedly it was hardly professional to come out and say what he did. I also think a major fact is we've not really seen him play a great deal and the last the fans saw of him was in a season when the majority of our players including Fryatt were woeful which leads to bad memories.

Anyway like you say lets hope he scores goals this season whilst he's still wearing the badge.

Firstly, yes I do, that is exactly what I think. Campbell wants to be able to say he is a Premier League player and he wants a new contract on Premier League money. While there is any chance of that happening he will be trying really hard!

Secondly, you answer your own question, after an awful season some of our players worked hard and turned it around, Campbell did not even make the effort. When he started he played like he couldn't be arsed, like the whole thing was beneath him, the difference in his play when he was out on loan was substantial. In short he disrespected the Club, the manager and indirectly the fans, that's what I have against him! At the moment he seems to get on with Sousa but the last couple of years tell us that when things are not going so well he will 'revert to type' and throw a sulk instead of working to turn things around.

And thirdly, you have that the wrong way round, Pearson did not get on with Campbell because he, Campbell, was negative and indisciplened, Pearson was praised for being strong on discipline and team spirit, why should he make an exception? As for Sousa's comments, they are either an attempt to strengthen our position should a club come in for him or standard PR from the manager.

Posted

But either way, as fans we should want to keep our best players.

I PS thinks he can spend the money on a decent striker who could be here 2/3/4 years then for me that's better than keeping a player who has never done it for us for one season, because he will walk for nothing in a years time.

I've never had anything against DJ, he's never had a run of games for the club since he arrived. Not so long ago is position was untenable with Pearson at the helm, but water has passed under the bridge since then. His comments about not wanting to be here would have been a large part to do with who was in charge, so I've certainly never taken them as a slight against the club.

If he stays, then I'm more than happy to see if he can perform given a decent run of games. If he goes, then we'll just get a replacement.

I think I'm in the minority here, but if Blackpool bid over a million for him, they can have him.

As a player, I just don't like him. He cost us a small fortune, has bled the club dry with extortionate wages and never looked interested. People will point out that he didn't get a fair chance under Pearson but I beg to differ. Pearson always struck me as a fair man, who would give any player a chance provided they worked hard. In short, I'd be happy to get rid.

Don't worry, I've remained apathetic throughout.

My two penneth on DJ Campbell, for what it's worth is as follows.

It's commendable that DJ has come back to us and put some effort in under Sousa and he appears to be in the form of his life which stretches back from his spell at Blackpool last season. But the question I ask is, why?

There aren't many players that have 3 years out in the wildnerness at a club and then they finally make it there, it just rarely happens and I think the damage has been done with Campbell and Leicester. The benefit to his form in pre-season is that we'll now get seven figures for him instead of probably bundling him out of the door for a pittance.

It hasn't worked out for Campbell here and i've always had my doubts about his real ability. He's never shown any signs of being a quality player for Leicester in competitive football, but admittedly he has shown he can score goals at other clubs.

If we are as skint as i'm led to believe we are then Sousa has played a blinder by getting DJ's commodity up in the last few weeks. No doubt our fans will go wild if he leaves, stating that we were finally seeing what he could do, but who says that if we keep him he won't fook off for nothing next summer? Having cost us £1.6 million and probably the same amount or more in wages, for what? Precisely 4 or 5 goals so far.

It's a gamble in my eyes if we don't cash in, But if we can afford not to and he's happy here then fair do's, i'll get behind him. But please if he does go, it'll be because he wants to and it makes good business sense. Don't forget what he said about us whilst Pearson was here, he hasn't suddenly fallen in love with us again. It was Martin Allen, not Leicester he came to play for.

But Campbell wasn't given a chance to turn things around. How can you say he showed no effort and couldn't be arsed when he wasn't given the chance to? He was seen as a burden on the wage bill and the club wanted shot of him.

Like I said above it wasn't professional of him to disrespect the club but when treated like shit it's only natural to show some ill feeling towards your employers. Where you get all this crap from is beyond me. I mean how do you know he sulks all the time?

There has been one common theme in Leicester City's pre-season programme ahead of their final friendly against Sunderland at the Walkers Stadium on Saturday. Striker DJ Campbell has scored in every single game.

A well taken one-on-one against Peterborough United on Tuesday was Campbell's fifth goal in as many games and the striker appears to be a crucial part of Paulo Sousa's plans.

Sousa has been delighted with the way Campbell has performed in pre-season, and says he can tell that the former Brentford and Birmingham City man is enjoying his football.

"Right from the beginning DJ has seemed very happy. He has been committed to me, to the club, to the fans and to football.

DJ loves playing football, not only in the games but also in our training sessions. We need to encourage him to stay like that and keep playing at this level."

At the other end of the pitch City are still searching for their first clean sheet under Sousa, and whilst the boss has seen an improvement defensively he insists there is still work to be done.

"We don't like to concede goals and we have already improved our defensive organisation but we have a long way to go in my opinion and we can improve much more.

For me the pre-season has been a little bit short, I've only had fourteen days and would've liked more time. But I'm happy with the improvements we've already made."

OS

Surely if we were set to sell him the club would stop an article like this from being put up as the OS's main headline. :S

We are talking about the LCFC OS here... it's precisely the sort of dumb ass thing they would do!!!

Let's hope this issue is settled in the next few days, so that Sousa, if he has to, can bring in a new striker before the season starts.
