marbelladave Posted 9 August 2010 Posted 9 August 2010 Playing wingers 'inside out' is the modern way, but it helps if it is done for the right reasons. Conventional wingers attack their fullback on the outside and cross with their stronger foot, this is only really effective if you have a strong center forward and player(s) in support. In the modern game there is usually only one central striker so the wingers have to get inside and give him support. In a 4-3-3/4-5-1 the wide men are also the supporting strikers so coming inside on their stronger foot to attack the box is most effective. Sorry to insult the intelligence of those who have already worked this out but some clearly have not...

I mean a lot of last season it seemed almost a given that if we went more than a goal down (and sometimes even just the one) that we weren't going to win it... Now I know this was the first day of the season, and thus there are a lot of unknowns, but as a whole I reckon it sets a decent precedent for the team's ability to keep their heads up under pressure. So, for that reason, all I can say is Up The Foxes!

Although we fell apart at the back we were decent going forward throughout, we always looked like we could score but with Morrison, Hobbs and Fryatt all having a bad day a result was just beyond us. The fighting spirit generated under Pearson seems to be still present and for once we look to have more in our locker than just 'hit and hope' to do something about it.

Yes, I'm actually looking forward to tonight's phone-in. The creme-de-la-creme of Lestoh will be out in full force with their "Sousa Out!" rants... I'd book last Saturday's experience under "lesson learned" and "taking the positives out of a game lost". The second half showed the class Sousa seems to aim for, shame the defense wasn't up for it for the first 45 minutes. But I'm sure we'll bounce back and get treated with a home win this Saturday.

Pearson didnt see the light oakley had been suffering for sometime with an injury,and had to have injections in his injury just so he could play. Perhaps the pain got to much,because in all fairness if you listen to his interview on lcfc world,he clearly states that he was not a winger but NP wanted him to play there. He also states that he asked sousa if he could go back into his proper position in the centre,and is glad he is back there. Lets just give the players a few games before writing them all off

Lesson Learnt in some ways, but lets not forget we had 55% of the overall posession, 10 shots to their 9 and 12 corners to their zero corners.... Considering it was away from home too im certainly not going to be beating myself up over this.. we did 'ok'

Sure we showed signs of promise in some areas but the overall performance was nothing like good enough. It was the first game of the season so much can be forgiven, specially in light of the fightback, but - We set up 4-4-2 with wide men and two up top, even Pearson gave up that idea before last Christmas! We looked under prepared tactically, no cohesion between defense and attack, left us wide open. Morrison, Hobbs, Berner and Fryatt in particular looked well off the pace. The substitutions were not as successful as most people report, sure Wellens and Howard were combative and heavily involved but in my opinion Wellens squeezed King out of the game as he tried (and failed) to take over the playmaker role and with everything going through Howard, our main threat Dyer, was starved of the ball. After the substitutions we were certainly well in control but we were also too predictable and made fewer clear cut chances which is why it took nearly half an hour to get the second goal, the first coming just 12 minutes after the break. We may well have had 12 corners and a handful of attacking free kicks but our delivery with the dead ball was pants. Is it too much to ask that someone in a team of professional players can take a corner? As I said above, it is early doors and most of the issues above can be sorted but only if we learn the lessons and work on them.

We looked dangerous throughout but were badly let down by our initial setup, Sousa at fault there, and by considerable rustiness (I hope that is all it was) in defence. That was it in a nutshell... Just one other thought, we were a bit too predictable after the substitutions, despite the pressure our better chances came in the first hour. Despite all his hard work and constant involvement, Howard creates little in the way of decent chances which is why his assist, from the right wing in any case, was so unusual.
CosbehFox Posted 10 August 2010 Posted 10 August 2010 Hobbs wasn't any better, in fact Morrison's main fault was assuming Hobbs would win the ball which he should have done. I don't think I have seen a poor spell between two centre-halves in thirty minutes for City since Howey and his partner can't remember who (at Villa in the Premier). What you don't see on the video of the goal is how Morrison gave the ball away for the first. There are some very encouraging things and some very worrying things. God knows how this season is going to turn out.
