ramboacdc Posted 7 August 2010 Posted 7 August 2010 saw the highlights whilst at work and from what i saw it just seemed like the 3 goals were caused by messes in the defence. horrible to have it happen 3 times in 45 minutes and in the 2nd half sousa's tactics worked like he promised us. Pearson was a defensive manager, sousa is an attacking manager. Just needs to sort out his back 4, get them stable and working well getting the balls away and we should do well. not gonna sell anyone down the river for it. opening days of the season there is no form book!
marbelladave Posted 7 August 2010 Posted 7 August 2010 That, in a nutshell is why we lost the game today, plus the fact we were practically a man down while N'Guessan was on the pitch. Still their were some encouraging signs second half, and judging by some of the results today it's too early to be reading too much into anything. Nah... thought Danny was quite effective first half, but then I could have been watching a different game...

Maybe i'm not the best person to answer as I can't remember having remotely near 12 but from the ones I can remember no, none were really a threat but then again they weren't much good last year imo.

marbelladave Posted 7 August 2010 Posted 7 August 2010 OK, a few thoughts on the game. I gave my views on our set up earlier, but in essence we were not at all bad going forward. Even in the first half we hit the woodwork three times and missed a couple of decent chances, most obviously Fryatt's. We were not all that great either, the wide men were both decent, Dyer outstanding, but Fryatt and Campbell looked lightweight as a front two. DJ was rarely involved and Fryatt was a fair bit off the pace, his touch was heavy and control poor with the result that neither player was effective and they tended to duplicate their efforts. As the half progressed King and Oakley (in particular) were put under a lot of pressure and their ball forward became more and more aimless, eventually we were reduced to hopeful balls over the top which were easily mopped up by the Palace defence. What decent attacking play we did manage came down the flanks, Dyer, mostly on the right was outstanding in everything bar his final ball and N'Guessan threatened on occasion and linked up well with Berner. Defensively was a different story, our midfield was overwhelmed and the coverage in front of our back four largely nonexistent. The first goal was a classic cock up, Hobbs failed to attack the ball and Morrison was caught horribly on the turn, looked rooted to the spot, Zaha did well but was hardly challenged. The second goal was typical of many conceded last season, opposition midfield player in space in front of our back four given time to get in a shot from distance that Weale failed to save, again! Third goal was actually decent play from Palace but again we gave them space to turn and run at our defence and their player reacted much quicker to Weale's parry than any of our defenders. Second half we were quick off the blocks while Palace seemed content to sit back, twelve minutes of decent pressure resulted in King scoring at the far post from a very decent Neilson cross but having got a goal back Sousa made the changes. Howard came on to lead the line with his considerable presence and is turn, run and pass for DJ to score was first class. Wellens gave us parity in midfield but his contributions were hit and miss, gave away the ball too often and when he got forward he created nothing, pretty much as usual. Howard held down the central role to such an extent that Campbell, nominally on the left, had a relatively free role and was all the better for it. Unfortunately the substitutions were only partly successful, Wellens played well forward which seened to squeeze King out of the game, attacking wise anyway and although Howard was heavily involved he still created little other than the goal which came from the right wing position. Down the center he caused disruption but little in the way of clear chances, sometimes they fall for us but to day they did not... Another day and we would have got a result but today our poor defending cost us dear, not gutted but not best pleased either.

Our set pieces were bobbins throughout, but then our crossing from open play was not much better... Neilson and Howard each got in good crosses that lead to the goals but most of the rest either failed to beat the first man or were over hit, pants really!

First half we were pretty poor, we weren't REALLY bad, hit the post but Palace always looked like scoring when they went forward. Second half was a massive improvement, hit the woodwork again though! I thought Howards pass to DJ for our 2nd goal was superb and Neilson's cross for King's goal was a peach too. I definitely think we can take positives out of that game.

He thought the table was a good foot longer than it actually was and managed to drop a full glass of the stuff all over my jeans Was funny though.

Petchy Posted 7 August 2010 Posted 7 August 2010 After watching the highlights, once their third goal went in Dyer was the only one who seemed genuinely fired up. The heads went down for the rest. Dyer was unlucky today as he was by far the best player on the pitch.

Absolutely magnificent, it was a tad dead at 3-0 down in the first half, but as much as I dislike "1-0 down who gives a fvck", I couldn't help but join in with that today, we were really on form. I'm hoping that wasn't just a one off because it was first day, but we had a great number there, and very few happy clappy mongy types, seemed a top away end in which virtually everyone sang and to my viewing - everyone stood. Got a dodgy feeling it was because it was first day but that was some away end from us.

Thought dyer was our best player, beat his man everytime. Dont quite understand why people who didnt go are saying to put wellens in instead of oakley after today.

We had a lot of the ball around the half way line but our possession-based approach is too stodgy at this stage. There's nobody in the centre of midfield with the requisite quality and turn of pace to make the style as dynamic as Sousa wants. Anyway 3-0 at half-time was ridiculous and the second half was one of the most one-sided 45 minutes of football you'll see. Campbell was a billion times better coming from wide.

Rome wasnt built in a day ..... three two done and we dont give a f**k were leicester boys and were going up !!

Len Finsbury Posted 8 August 2010 Posted 8 August 2010 As FM seems to be a point of football reference to some people on here, I'd just like to say that everyone knows you need to give a new tactic at least five games to bed in Oh, and with 12 corners in the game, perhaps we can have Andy King standing on the edge of the area and utilising the corner cheat!! Are people really that worried about a losing an away game on the first game of the season (especially in London where we have, at times, struggled regardless of the manager)? Are we expected to win every game? I was as disappointed as everyone to go three down by half time but a spirited performance in the second half was encouraging. Bar a few silly mistakes for their goals, we'd all be in completely different moods (although I suppose some will still moan). On the subject of silly mistakes, both centre halves are not exactly 'experienced' yet so are still learning their trade as it were. The more they play the better they get.
