DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 When he's good he's very good, but lacks consistency.
HonradaRaposa Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 You obviously didn't go to any of the games in League One then? Went to them all kid, and he wasn't that great in that division either. Leeds home was about all he did, that is how much of an impact in that league he had.
Father Ted Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 Sousa likes Steve Howard, hence his 'he's my number 1 striker, etc... blah blah'. This is an improved contract, not an extension, to get him to stay.
Wdywd Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 Went to them all kid, and he wasn't that great in that division either. Leeds home was about all he did, that is how much of an impact in that league he had. Tbf to him (not something I'm inclined to be) he was important in League One just cos of the way we played. The fact that he scored 15 though is more of a damning assessment of the quality of the league rather than of his ability. He has had, at the very most, 10 good games in the Championship, spread over 1 & a half seasons. You were right earlier when you said something about us loving to praise mediocre players. It's happened with Logan, with Howard, and with Neilson after one good game this season. Those three, and Oakley, weren't getting in the first team by the end of last season, why are they suddenly considered good enough now?
fleckneymike Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 If we'd signed Howard on a free then I'd see this as a good deal. As he cost 1.5 million he's been an expensive luxury which hasn't really paid off (though that opinion obviously has the benefit of hindsight). Undoubtedly he has had a few games, WBA away, Leeds home, Cardiff away to name three but he's also struggled in many games. I would like to think he's had to accept a wage cut if he's signed an extension.
J.Lisemore Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 Went to them all kid, and he wasn't that great in that division either. Leeds home was about all he did, that is how much of an impact in that league he had. , he scored 13 goals and as has been said many times before, if Howard wasn't playing...Fryatt wouldn't have scored as many goals as he did in that division. If you went Peterborough away that season, you would of realised this.

If you went Peterborough away that season, you would of realised this. Peterborough away had nothing to do with the lack of Howard, it was down to the defensive calamity that was Paddy Kisnorbo, square head and more balls out of play than Conrad Logan.

So it was just coincidence that when Howard didn't play, we weren't the same team? I'm not saying everything revolves round Howard but he was a big player for us in that divison. I do agree that Kisnorbo was a calamity.

Well we wouldn't be would be because there would be at least one different player in the starting XI
Jodranadinho Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 Big Steve is a great asset for any club and gives us that extra dimension over other teams. When tidy football is not always the best way to go, theres always the option of howard winning the header to knock it down to fryatt/campbell. For me he's the number one striker, but hes lack of stamina does let him down at times and hes dominance in the air turns into aggression, mistakes and unessecary fouls. definitely worth an extended contract. Sooooper steve
J.Lisemore Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 Well we wouldn't be would be because there would be at least one different player in the starting XI I meant as in the way we play.. Jeez, some people are brain-dead on here.

Sooooper steve It's a shame his dominance in the air never translates into headed goals. Like I've said I don't think he's as terrible as many would have us believe but I would say we paid well over the odds for him (in hindsight).
dandannieldanok Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 Yet again here we are people defending mediocre players. We're in a mediocre league, so therefore you're only going to be able to attract mediocre players unless you either have a fantastic youth system, or get very lucky in the transfer market.

Like I've said I don't think he's as terrible as many would have us believe but I would say we paid well over the odds for him (in hindsight). It is true that his headed goals are a rarity most memorably his goal against leeds, but i would be interested to find out his figures for how many assits have came from him for matty's goals in league one. His knock downs and hold up play is at sometimes first class. sometimes...
Wdywd Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 I'd be more interested to see his stats for the Championship rather than League 1. We REALLY need to stop justifying his new contract by saying 'oh well he was good in the division below 2 years ago'.
carterfox90 Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 oh dear are we that desperate nothing against him but he does look awful some games
Leicester_Loyal Posted 27 August 2010 Posted 27 August 2010 We really do need to raise our footballing standards at this football club.

I can find assist data but it doesn't show who gained from the assist (besides Leicester obviously) Howard Appearances,Shots on, Shots off, Goals, Assists including cup matches. Sub apps in () 08/09 - 49 + (1) / 77 / 72 / 15 / 14 09/10 - 19 + (18) / 25 / 28 / 3 / 3 League one he's very good, Championship, not so much.

It's a bit more easy to score goals and assists when you have more minutes on the pitch?
fleckneymike Posted 27 August 2010 Posted 27 August 2010 I think there lies your answer. It's a bit more easy to score goals and assists when you have more minutes on the pitch? A bit chicken and egg though. Score and set up goals = stay in team or stay in team = score and set up goals. In terms of assists we were terrible last season as a team. Fryatt was the most creative with 6 assists in total.
North-LondonFox Posted 27 August 2010 Posted 27 August 2010 I am not a big Howard fan at all - it always seems to completely change the way we play when he's on the pitch and he always seems to be moaning at the other players. I think we need a big forward i'd just peferi t not to be Howard. Having Heskey back would be great but i'm not sure how many games he'd manage on the bounce these days - he's looking a bit jaded!
Simmo86 Posted 27 August 2010 Posted 27 August 2010 When he's good he's very good, but lacks consistency. Spot on
caz05 Posted 28 August 2010 Posted 28 August 2010 No he doesn't and no he hasn't. He has been an unmitigated disaster and an expensive one at that. What a load of tosh
