davieG Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 From the Merc Steve Howard has revealed he is in talks with Leicester City to extend his contract. The 34-year-old striker looked to be on his way out of the club during the summer after Huddersfield made an approach for him. There was uncertainty over his future following the departure of former manager Nigel Pearson, who had offered Howard a new deal following his impressive performance in the play-off semi-final defeat at Cardiff City last season. However, the former Scotland international has become an integral part of new City boss Paulo Sousa's plans and the contract offer has remained on the table. Howard, who scored the last-minute winner at Leeds United on Tuesday to put City into the hat for the third-round draw of the Carling Cup, said he would be pleased to extend his two-and-a-half year stay at the Walkers Stadium. "I'm very happy here and I am in the process of re-negotiating my contract," said Howard, whose goal against Leeds was his first of the season. "It should be sorted out in a week or two. Perhaps a deal for a year or two – four would be nice! "After the play-off defeat to Cardiff, Nigel said we will sit down and re-negotiate my contract which I was happy with. "I wished him well when he went to Hull. Moving to Huddersfield was an option for me and there was talk of it, but Paulo said he wants me here and now I'll carry on and do my best for him." Howard held his nerve to hammer home the decisive penalty at Elland Road, a ground which he admits has been a happy hunting ground for him, and he believes the win could kick-start City's stuttering start to the season. He added that City have plenty to look forward to, especially if they can bring in a few players before the transfer window closes next week, and said: "I hope it gets us going. It's a shame it wasn't in the league but a win is a win, and now we want to get a few more under our belt. "It's good that more players are on the way here and it is going to take time because we have a new manager and new players, and we are getting used to different things. "There is a totally different outlook now, things have changed and the two managers (Pearson and Sousa) are chalk and cheese. We just have to get used to different things. "I didn't feel much pressure with the penalty. I didn't really want it to go to extra-time and I was absolutely tired, so I was pleased to score. "I've played at this ground a lot and I enjoy playing Leeds. I scored this one and got the winner a couple of seasons ago at our place, so I wouldn't mind playing them every week."
Webbo Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 I've nothing against Howard and I think he's been one of the better players this season. I just wonder how many more years we can get out of him. Can't see the logic of extending his contract.
STUHILL Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 He deserves it, but hopefully when we have one or two more strikers come in, he will only be considered as an impact sub! Done very well for us though over the years.
lcfcsnow Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 We will not get promoted if we keep persisting with players like Steve Howard, he's just not good enough and him playing as the lone striker scares me to death.

Did u watch him at Cardiff playoff game or 2nd half at Leeds this week? He was best player on the pitch. Now I'm not saying he should start every game but if the guy plays like that for us coming off the bench, then he deserves and extra year

Christmas come early for Howard with this contract extension, typical City.
hackneyfox Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 How many did he miss in the first half against Leeds?
blueblood88 Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 There's no way he said "absolutely tired" I think it was more along the lines of 'absolutely fooked'
HonradaRaposa Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 Did u watch him at Cardiff playoff game or 2nd half at Leeds this week? He was best player on the pitch. Now I'm not saying he should start every game but if the guy plays like that for us coming off the bench, then he deserves and extra year I didn't see him at Leeds, but I've seen 90% of his pathetic efforts in a City shirt, moaning and complaining because the ref had the temerity to award a freee kick after he fouled someone. His appaling display of toddler petulance when subbed by Pearson last season. His assault on the Watford player at the end of last season. Yet again here we are people defending mediocre players.
leftsideoverhere Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 There's no way he said "absolutely tired" Yeah, that was the bit of the interview that stood out for me. "Absolutely... tired"? Hardly. As for Howard, he looks five years younger this season: fitter, faster, and playing the ball with his feet, and even some delightful chested lay-offs at Leeds. He's been a revelation. The pass for DJ's goal at Palace will probably be the best assist we see all season. Last season he looked so out of sorts, moaning and complaining all the while, at referees and at his team mates. But the more we see of the new Howard, the more that last season's frustration makes sense. Who would enjoy having endless high balls pumped up to you if the other teams centre-backs were just standing behind you holding you down. Repeated tussles with defenders, and 50/50 refereeing decisions, with no chance to actually play football - it's no wonder he got pissed off. This season he has team mates instructed to play the ball to him along the ground, and he's getting to play a much more sophisticated centre forward role. Surprisingly, perhaps, for someone who looks like a typical route one 'lump' centre forward, it turns out he can actually play a bit. Anyone else reminded a bit of Steve Claridge? Another one who had rather more football skill than the world, and even his team mates, gave him credit for?
Guest Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 Good stuff. There's some utter crap being talked in this thread, 'unmitigated disaster' do me favour
MPH Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 18 months ago he seemed to of fallen out of favor with Pearson, wasn't getting games and looked to be on his way out. Fair play to him. He didn't do a DJ, he got his head down, worked hard and he fought his way back into the 1st 11. He has been a good professional. He has earnt a new contract.
MPH Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 I think it was more along the lines of 'absolutely fooked' I was thinking 'bloody knackered, mate!'

Christmas come early for Howard with this contract extension, typical City. I'm not saying he should be playing 46 games this season but I've seen enough qualities he still has, to show he can still be a useful player to come off the bench or used tactically to change our style. He can dominate in the air and hold the ball up better than anyone else we have right now. You also can't forget about his experience and knowledge he can pass on to other players.
J.Lisemore Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 No he doesn't and no he hasn't. He has been an unmitigated disaster and an expensive one at that. You obviously didn't go to any of the games in League One then?
STUHILL Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 You obviously didn't go to any of the games in League One then? People have short memories mate
SeCrEt FoX Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 GREAT NEWS !!! Even if we just use him for Leeds games .No seriously think some of you on here are very harsh towards Howard. He has been a good servant unlike a lot of past players and you will soon suck him off when he scores or has a good game . That goal against Leeds in league 1c'mon give him some credit for fook sake
lildave3 Posted 26 August 2010 Posted 26 August 2010 Brilliant, couldn't be fooked with extra time so just smacked in a last minute winner instead.
