Sven Goran Eriksson's advisers in talks with Leicester City over vacant manager's job

Sven Goran Eriksson’s advisors are in talks with Leicester City this afternoon discussing the possibility of the former England manager becoming the successor to Paulo Sousa, who was dismissed this morning.

The Championship club are also considering Martin O’Neill, the former Aston Villa manager.

Eriksson had only recently been poised to join Arabian side Al Hilal on a one-year £1.2 million contract and was due to fly to Riyadh once they are out of the Arabian Champions League, but the Swede is now considering a two-year contract. If agreed, he could start work on Monday.

It comes after Sousa endured a poor start to the season. Despite being given assurances that his job was secure just a week ago, the Portuguese was sacked just nine games into the Championship season, a stunning reversal which has provoked the League Managers Association into a stinging rebuke.

Richard Bevan, the chief executive of the LMA, attacked the club’s “knee-jerk reaction”, describing it as “destabilising to the entire club” and demanding that the board revise their management recruitment policy.

“How can a chairman expect to deliver success at a football club when a talented manager is recruited and dismissed within 2 months, at the start of the season and is given only nine league games to put his own imprint on the squad and the club?” he said.

“Knee-jerk dismissals, and the chopping and changing of managers will not deliver success on the field and is incredibly destabilising to the entire club. Paulo’s sacking is even more disappointing in light of the chairman’s comments on Paulo’s appointment, in the summer, when he stated he was ‘delighted to acquire a manager of such great calibre.’

“Leicester City has had fourteen managers since 2004 and six whilst the current chairman has been at the club. Clearly the club has to examine its manager recruitment strategy as their current approach does not work. It is damaging to the club and its fans and is an inappropriate way to treat talented managers and their careers.”

Might clear things up that Sven isn't in the country, and his advisor's are in contact with the club.

Nice mental image of Stringer on his own outside the training ground, on his own, like a tit.

It's also worth thinking.

Pini Zahavi used to be/still might be Sven's agent, Well he's a good friend of Svens.

Didn't Zahavi negotiate mandaric's deal for Pompey, and to sell LCFC to the thai's?

If he doesn't show he'll feel like one. Probably been falsely tipped off to lead him off the trail.

I just joined as a fan of Sven its always interesting to talk to fans of the club he might manage.

Keith Weller

"if we get sven it will be amazing, i think the guy is a top quality coach, getting shitty england to a quater final"

Well said Keith, Yes he is. He left England with the best competitive record of all England’s managers in the whole history. We lost 3 times in 90 minutes under him and all by 1 goal. Ivory coast wanted him to stay and he raised them up the FIFA ranking even though he didn’t get them past Portugal or Brazil. Getting England to the quarter is something we would all take since Sven left. Lets not forget that.

Munzie

"That's our future transfer budget blown on his wages then!"

I agree he will cost money and maybe a lot of it. But, you want the managers that have won a double in Italy my friend, this is what you pay. MON is a quality manager and yes, i think would do a fanatic job, but I would say the CV between the 2 tips Sven a long way ahead. However, MON defiantly a quality appointment.

Edmund Crouchback

"Bit of a come down considering MON had been mentioned but Sven like MON brings a great backroom team with him. Tord Grip will be a real asset"

Tord always goes with Sven. A great team that have won 30 trophies all over Europe. There is no Sven without Tord. Sven was assistant to Tord at the start of his management in Sweden.

Samilktray

"How is Sven a come down from O'neil"

I agree, Sven isn’t. Sven has more trophies and more big time jobs on his CV. However I wont bash MON, quality manager and will do a great job for you boys.

Ricey

"It's a coup but Sven is hardly known for his long term commitments. I just hope it's Sven because MON turned us down, not that we have turned MON down."

If you track Sven’s career he wants a long term commitment. He wanted to stay at Man City but the former chief shockingly kicked him out. Come on, even if you hate Sven, most people agree sacking him was harsh. He finished ninth, beat united twice that season in the league, and a high place in the fair paly league put them in Europe. Sven wants long term.

"I don’t want Sven, Sorry but I'd rather have an unproven manager than him "

I like the fact that you admit Sven is a proven manager. As long as it’s not the press making your mind up on Sven, and I am not saying it is, then your point is fine. However, I would say, take a manager with loads of experience MON or Sven. Don’t write off the old Swede my friend

Another plus point about Sven. He was able to draw Sol Campbell to Notts County (granted he only stayed one game) but he can draw some big names to the club. ***Champagne on ice for the moment he signs***

I hope its Dowie.

I love the way Dowie's name strikes the fear of god into football fans who's team are currently recruiting a new manager. Appointing Dowie has become the lowest of lowest low ,bottom of barrel in terms of selecting a new manager. It doesn't matter who are or what league you're in you do not want to end up with Dowie.

It's also quite fascinating that he's always available.

Ulrika Johnson? Welcome to the forum.

The only concerns I have over Eriksson is his knowledge of the players (presumably zilch) and the fact he's obviously only doing it for money (goes without saying I suppose).

If we rid ourselves of our O'Neill-centric bias for a moment, who is the better candidate?

Sven has won Serie A, the Italian cup with three different teams, won the Portugese league, the Uefa cup, the Cup Winners Cup and the Swedish league and managed England to two world cup quarter finals.

O'Neill has 2 carling cups, a plethora of meaningless Scottish trophies and our eternal adoration.

Sven is the stand-out candidate.

Completely see where you are coming from but IMO loyalty and actually caring about the club are worth far more than previous records. I think the point is mute though as if MON was interested in pretty sure it would be a done deal by now.

Dont agree, sven has never done anything outside a top club and doesnt have any experience in the championship!

Where as o neill as done well at every club he as been at, has proven himself in the championship, plus will have more knowledge on the players needed to get out of the championship.

Hate to sound negative but just got a bad feeling about sven
